Looking Ahead A t our annual family meeting in August, I talked openly and honestly
about the challenges facing CLC and other provider agencies in the Detroit area.
Last year, the State of Michigan took the first step in changing the way it allocates
Community Mental Health dollars, resulting in a significant decrease in funding to
Oakland County; however this potential funding cut to provider agencies was
bridged by Oakland County through the use of their reserve funds.
Over the past several months the provider network, in collaboration with
the Arc of Oakland County, organized many advocacy efforts on behalf of
individuals with developmental disabilities. They hosted two Town Hall meetings,
met with Community Mental Health leaders in Lansing, and spoke with state
legislators. These efforts were successful in convincing the State to halt any further
changes to their funding allocations. Despite this decision, the Oakland County
Community Mental Health Authority (OCCMHA) Board of Directors voted to pass a
6% reduction in revenue to core provider agencies this fiscal year to recoup some
of their lost reserves.
Many of you already know that our state funding, in the best of times,
does not cover all of our operating costs. Last year’s gap was $488,000, and, as of
October 1, 2014, the OCCMHA reduction will add another $200,000 to that gap.
I have been working closely with our Board of Directors to identify and implement
efficiencies in our operations. We are aggressively analyzing the budgets of each
individual home and each of our service areas to ensure that we are doing
everything possible to reduce expenses and minimize the impact of our funding
reductions. We are placing major emphasis on reducing staff overtime hours and
minimizing our funding loss created by resident Leaves of Absence (LOA’s). We
are already working on next Spring’s Celebrity Chefs Dinner on April 17, 2015 and
I thank those of you who faithfully honor your pledges to CLC.
This year, one of the most important and effective contributions you can
make is to advocate for the programs and services that your family members are
receiving and for all persons with disabilities in Oakland County. If you don’t know

It is with both gratitude and sadness we announce the retirement of
Board Member and 1st Vice-Chair, Joe Gerber. Joe worked as a CPA with the
Detroit accounting firm, Plante Moran, and brought his excellent financial
management skills with him to CLC.
Today, Joe and his wife, Peggy, enjoy spending time at their
condominium on North Hutchinson Island in Florida, most likely entertaining
their two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren! We wish Joe
the best in his new endeavors and thank him sincerely for his many faithful years
of service to CLC.
Don’t be a Stranger, Joe!
Resident Spotlight If you’re the kind of person who likes tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots fresh from the garden, you’ll
definitely like Robbie K. One of Robbie’s favorite memories while growing up in Pontiac, Michigan is helping
his dad tend his family’s garden. They grew fresh vegetables every summer – a hobby and a love Robbie has
brought with him to CLC. As Alisa, Robbie’s house manager says, “Robbie takes great care of *the garden+ all on
his own.”
Another love of Robbie’s is scrambled eggs. “He asks for them
almost every day,” according to Alisa. She describes Robbie as
“extremely kind, very helpful and cooperative, friendly with everyone.”
One of his housemates, Grant, even calls him “Handsome Robbie.”
Robbie spent his working years washing windows at Meijer but
now relishes the time he has for lunch with his younger brother, Gary.
Robbie played baseball when he was a young boy, playing right field
like one of his favorite Detroit Tigers, Torii Hunter. (His absolute
favorite, though, is first baseman Miguel “Miggy” Cabrera.) Robbie
enthusiastically watches the Tigers and the Detroit Lions “whenever
I can!”
When asked what he likes best about CLC, Robbie replied, “I
like friends. I like Jeremy, I like Lisa, I like Nathalie.” And Robbie, we
like you, too!

Frankenmuth, Michigan was the destination for the
lucky residents of Warner House. Says House Manager,
Kathi Stalk, “It was time. We really needed to get away and
they had a blast!” They ate, shopped, and smiled the time
away, returning home refreshed and invigorated.

what to do, I suggest becoming a member
of the Arc of Oakland County. They are a
strong advocacy organization that is
currently working tirelessly on behalf of
the people we serve to have our funding
reduction reversed. Write your state or
Oakland County legislators and let them
know your concerns; attend Town Hall
meetings or OCCMHA Board meetings;
watch your email for more updates.
2015 is shaping up to be a
challenging year, but by working together
I believe we can be stronger than ever.

Take Me Ovt to the Ballgame! These are just a few of our residents who have enjoyed an outing to Comerica Park this summer.
Thanks to the Detroit Tigers and Major League Baseball’s Community Initiative program for providing CLC
with free tickets every month since April.
You can make a donation to CLC just by doing your grocery shopping. You’ll need to
register your Kroger Rewards card once a year at www.kroger.com/communityrewards. Kroger will then donate a portion of your total grocery bill to CLC every time you shop. Try it!

Verz Sad Nezs We were shocked and saddened on August 18th to hear that Sherry Needham,
sister of AILP/SILP Manager Edie Needham, passed away. Sherry worked at CLC from
2003 until 2011 as a House Manager for House I, Freedom and Wagner where she was
deeply loved by the residents at all of the homes.
Sherry had three children (Ashley, Carmen and Michael) and three
grandchildren (Asher, Aiden and Lucas). She grew up on a farm and maintained her
farm girl roots. She loved car racing, horse pulling, dogs and her family. She had an
adventuresome soul and loved to jump in the car and take a road trip for the day or a
short weekend. She often went on mini vacations with the residents.
Sherry loved the residents at CLC and devoted her life to making sure they were
happy and well taken care of. She will be missed by all.

We welcome Jeremy Little to our office staff as our new Human Resources Director.
Jeremy comes to us with more than 20 years of HR experience in education, publishing, manufacturing, construction, and health care.
Jeremy commutes each day from Pinckney, Michigan where he lives with his beautiful
wife and three active sons, two in high school and one at Central Michigan University.
Jeremy’s “family” also includes six happy hens, two ducks, and a dog (also happy).
In addition to coaching youth wrestling and working as a soccer referee, this year
Jeremy became the Assistant Varsity soccer coach at Pinckney High School. In his "spare" time Jeremy is an avid soc-
cer player and somehow finds time for gardening, woodworking, kayaking, camping, and anything else outdoors. Best
of all, Jeremy seems perfectly at ease working in an office entirely comprised of women.
Employee Spotlight In this issue, we’re shining our spotlight on three enthusiastic VLV House employees – House Manager, Lisa Freeman, and Direct Care Workers Gloria Gray and Angela Crews.
Lisa came to CLC in November 2013 after 21 years at Spectrum Child & Family Services. She was looking for a
change and she found a warm and welcoming environment at VLV. Lisa describes the VLV atmosphere as “so serene”
and the families of VLV clients as “beautiful – you can tell that they are caring and compassionate people; they’re
always thanking us for taking care of their sister or daughter.” Lisa is currently a student at Spring Arbor University in
Southfield working toward her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. She plans to enroll in their accelerated Master’s
degree program upon graduation and ultimately hopes to work in recipient rights for the developmentally disabled.
Gloria has been with CLC for seven years and says she likes working at VLV because “the ladies *residents+ that
I work for are just AWESOME! I love them all. I love when I come to work and am greeted with hugs and smiles, it
makes me feel wonderful inside.” Gloria writes, “I have no hobbies, I just love life! I have been married to a wonderful
man for 26 years and have three sons and five grandchildren.”
Angela couldn’t agree more with Gloria: “What I like most about my job at the VLV house is working with the
ladies. On Sundays we have movie day and I rent a movie and make popcorn and we sit together and enjoy the show.
It makes my day to come to work and they are happy to see me.” Angela works at Henry Ford Hospital in oncology
during the week and enjoys spending time with family and friends. Working two jobs makes Angela declare, “my
favorite hobby is sleep.”
