“Life is a Highway” is more than just a popular songwhich won its author the Juno award for best single ofthe year in 1992, having topped the Canadian musiccharts and catapulted Tom Cochrane into internationalstardom (not that he was doing too badly beforehand),but his famous chorus has in fact become a philosophyin living. Like when first learning to drive, we stop andstart, hesitant and unsure quite how to reach our desti-nation, so too in life we are often challenged with thosesharp turns and unexpected bumps that make it difficultto meet the goals we set out to achieve.
But all too often life’s bumps and potholes are not theresult of externally imposed problems or of relation-ships gone wrong, but rather they are a product of ourown errors and mistakes. We can’t always blame it on ourspouse, our boss, our kids, our health or any other factoraimed at vindicating the actions we perform and thewords we utter. “There is no righteous person on earthwho does only good and never sins” King Solomon as-sures us in Kohelet. Mistakes are symptomatic of thehuman condition and it’s not a question of if, but whenand how often we err. We can of course minimize thenumber of mistakes we may make (especially those thataffect other people) by simply thinking before we speakand act, but we will always make errors in judgement justas humankind has done since the dawn of creation -think Adam’s sin with the Tree of Knowledge.
Why then, did G-d create mankind in the first place ifHe clearly knew we were going to sin? Our Sages pointout that prior to creation G-d consulted the Torah figu-ratively speaking, and asked what it thinks about the ideaof creating man. The Torah exclaimed: “Why would youwant to create man when there are times he will sin be-fore you?!” to which G-d responded “Is it for nothingthat I am called compassionate and slow to anger?! Be-fore I created the world I created Teshuva (Repen-tance)!”
Mistakes are a part of life, but rectifying them is an op-tion never closed to us. In the soul stirring piece we re-cite on Rosh Hashana, “Unetane Tokef ”, we quiver aswe read the words that articulate the possible outcomesfor the year ahead. Who will live and who will die? Whowill have peace and who will be tormented? Who will beprosperous and who impoverished? The angels tremble
and even they are not guiltless before G-d. But with allthe doom and gloom, the final words are deeply reliev-ing, as they are uplifting: “But repentance, prayer andcharity annul the harsh decree!” Repentance, or Teshuva,is like a “shield in the face of punishment”, as our Sagesstate in Ethics of Our Fathers. It is a gateway throughwhich we can re-enter our past and fix it for the better. It is our ability to transcend time and reconnect with ourtimeless G-d. Through Teshuva, we can right the wrongsof the past and set new goals for the future, glossingover the bumps and potholes in the highway of life andpaving the way for the positive journey ahead.
But for Teshuva to become a reality in our lives, we mustwant to change - it doesn’t happen on its own. Comingto shule on Rosh Hashana creates the environment inwhich Teshuva can be achieved but ultimately we needa wake up call to actually achieve it - and that wake upcall is the sobering sound of the shofar as it emanatesfrom the ram’s horn, the symbol evoking memories ofthe ram Abraham sacrificed in substitute of his dear sonIsaac in the gripping story of our first Patriarch.
But perhaps the symbolism of the shofar runs evendeeper. Its shape, narrow at one end and wide at theother, gives us a message of hope. Even when life seemsdifficult at one end, narrow and constrained by the er-rors we’ve made and because of the people we’ve hurt,we realize that at the other end there is an opening offorgiveness and hope for the days and years that lieahead. There’s no point dwelling in the past, but we haveeverything to gain by focusing on the future.
As one of my congregants once shared with me aboutthat highway we drive on called life: the road ahead isseen through a windscreen the width of the car, butlooking back requires only a rear view mirror the size ofa small envelope. There is time for reflection on the pastso we can learn from our mistakes and avoid repeatingin the future, but this is a very small gap compared tothe bright future that awaits us on that very special high-way. May we merit a year of health, happiness and truepeace in our holy land of Israel. Shanah Tova.

Pink Pilates is a physiotherapy based rehabilitation pro-gramme dedicated to helping women who have been di-agnosed with cancer and have undergone treatment, whether it be surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hor-mone therapy or a combination of the above. Pink Pilatesis designed to help women who have been diagnosed withcancer take their first steps on the road to recovery.
It is now well recognised that a modified exercise pro-gramme improves survival rates from cancer as well as im-proving physical and psychological functioning. There arenumerous credible clinical studies with evidence to sup-port this. The latest research has found that exercise canhelp boost the immune system, limit weight gain fromchemotherapy, ease treatment side effects and more im-portantly, improve quality of life.
The Pink Pilates programme consists of 10 one-on-onesessions with a physiotherapist, designed and delivered tomeet the needs of the individual client. The programmeis designed to restore physical strength, improve bodyconfidence and incorporate exercise into the client’slifestyle. The programme is flexible to accommodate thedifferent phases of cancer treatment and recovery.
The Pink Pilates programme is chronologically formattedinto three phases. Timing of each phase is dependent onthe client’s physical condition, the length of the healingprocess, the type of surgery involved, and the courses ofthe adjuvant treatments. Many variables may exist that willeffect particular service and exercise choices given at thetime. The three phases are the Post Op Phase, the Recov-ery Phase and the Fitness Phase.
The Post Op Phase is designed to assist in the healingprocess of clients who are recently post –surgery to re-store strength and flexibility to particular joints and musclegroups that have become weak and inflexible as the resultof surgery.
The Recovery Phase is designed to help improve energylevels and general well-being during cancer treatments. Itaims to help clients manage fatigue and restore post-op
flexibility and strength. Strengthening and stretching ex-ercises are prescribed for the core trunk muscles as wellas the upper and lower limbs. These exercises are pre-scribed on an individual basis to meet the needs of theclient.
The Fitness Phase is designed to facilitate overall condi-tioning and to increase physical stamina and promote andencourage good exercise habits for life.
A combination of modalities such as manual therapy andmassage to restore balance to the musculoskeletal system, breathing techniques to promote relaxation and ClinicalPilates to increase core and general muscle strength. Inaddition the combination of these modalities will help todecrease the risk of cancer treatment side effects such asshoulder problems, scar tissue formation, weight gain, fa-tigue and lymphoedema. Each client will have an individ-ually prescribed home exercise programme.
The Pink Pilates Programme was developed in NewZealand in 2006 by Physiotherapist Lou James. The PinkPilates Programme is the most popular rehabilitation andexercise programme among cancer survivors in NewZealand and is supported by cancer surgeons, oncologists, nurses and cancer support services nationwide. 14 SEPTEMBER / YOM TOV 2012 TO ADVERTISE 0411.395.031
Sugar has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Tempting and enjoy-
able as it is, however, it is somethingmost people feel they cannot live without. Cut sugar
out of your diet and you will experience a surge of en-ergy, unprecedented weight loss, deeper sleep, and an
unlimited range of health benefits. Sugar is the general word used for table sugar, su-
crose, the disaccharide comprised of glucose andfructose. Glucose is the body’s favourite fuel; quickand easy to access, efficient in use, and effortless tostore excess. Absorbed glucose readily enters thebloodstream and with the aid of insulin, suppliesglucose to the cells, liver, and muscles. Any extra glu-cose that is not used as energy ends up as part ofyour adipose tissue, better known as fat.
This is precisely why refined carbohydrates, whiteflour, white rice, and white sugar, are so tempting. The bran has been removed from the grain/plantand there is no fibre left to slow down its digestion. As quickly as the simple carbohydrate is eaten bothdigestion and absorption occur and blood sugarrises, leaving you feeling, if only temporarily, ener-getic.
But high blood sugar is toxic and its harmful ef-fects are plenty. High blood sugar increases suscep-tibility to bacterial and fungal infections, creating anenvironment for yeast infections, thrush, and poorwound healing. High blood sugar stimulates nervedamage causing impaired digestion and damage tothe small blood vessels in the eyes and kidneys caus-ing blindness and kidney failure. Nerve damage also
triggers constant pain and tin-gling sensations. High bloodsugar brings on prematureaging. And because your bodydoesn’t need to break down anyfat for energy, high blood sugarmakes and keeps you fat.
The pancreas regulates bloodsugar levels by releasing insulininto the blood. As soon assugar flows into the bloodplasma, insulin follows. The in-sulin is then taken up by recep-tors to facilitate its entry intothe cells. This continues untilthe pancreas stops making in-sulin or the receptors becomeinsulin resistant from over use.Glucose in the blood cannot
get to the cells resulting in high blood sugar and lowenergy and oxygen in the cells.
Alternatively fructose will go directly to the liver.Excessive fructose cannot be processed by the liver, and is turned into fat. The liver sends theses fats, called triglycerides, into the bloodstream. Hightriglyceride levels in the blood are linked to heart dis-ease, obesity, increased insulin resistance, and an un-satisfied appetite.
Sugar needs to be dropped like it’s hot.
Unfortunately sugar is found everywhere as glu-cose, sucrose, fructose, galactose, maltose, tablesugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, agavenectar, maple syrup, molasses, honey to name a fewsources. Sugar substitutes include stevia, xylitol, as-partame, sucralose, and saccharin. There are alsofood products that seem like food but are so full ofchemicals and sugar you’d be better off not eatingthem.
Found in almost all processed foods as High Fruc-tose Corn Syrup (HFCS), the overconsumption offructose is debated as being the cause behind the in-crease of obesity in general and in children specifi-cally. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) amplifies thedose of fructose in a serving and although fructoseis indeed the sugar found in fruit, amounts pale incomparison. Raw honey and Blackstrap Molasses,in small amounts, are good choices for sweetenersdue to their high enzyme, vitamin and mineral con-tent. Stevia is best. It is a natural, sweet, white pow-

der or liquid extracted from the tequila plant, haszero calories, and does not stimulate an insulin re-sponse.
Artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Splenda, and Sweet ‘n Low are toxic substances that createan imbalance and harmful situations in the body.Studies point toward an increase in overall weightwhen diet substances are consumed. Seemingly, tricking the body only stimulates the desire formore sweet things.
Where to go from here?
Start by crowding out the unhealthy with thehealthy. Eat plenty of vegetables. The key is get-ting good recipes. Prepare vegetables as differentlyand as deliciously as you can. Focus on green leafyvegetables, as they are often most lacking in a per-sons diet. Try vegetables you have never preparedbefore. Don’t be fat shy. Healthy fats like coconutoil and olive oil along with Celtic sea salt, spicesand herbs will jazz up the flavour without com-promising your health.
Cut out white products (rice, flour, sugar) andfoods made with them. They can cause inflamma-tion, obesity, and diabetes. You do not need themand the less you eat them, the less you will wantthem.
Read ingredients labels. You will be surprised athow many “healthy” foods are full of sugar andjunk. Remember that although the ingredients areordered by quantity, manufacturers will sometimesuse multiple forms of sugar so that they can listthem further down on in the label. Do not eat any-thing with HFCS in it!
Drink water and eat protein. Water curbs crav-ings and eliminates the question of what to drinkwhen cutting out diet soft drinks. Inadequateamounts of protein can cause sugar cravings.
Make a commitment to yourself and your health. You deserve it.
