Dreamcoat

Sunday, October 3, 2pm, Outside the Inn

a musical comedy with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on the “coat of many colors” story in the Book of Genesis. This special presentation features Lath-rop’s own Matt Meers playing every character himself, with costumes and all! Matt has performed across the country as well as on and off-Broadway. He’s thrilled to present this encore production here at

Lathrop.

ANNIE PETERSON & PETER BLOOD Sunday, October 10, 3pm, Outside the Meeting House

As the makers of the two enormously popular songbooks Rise Up Sing-ing and Rise Again, Annie and Peter have played a central role in a quiet revolution of group singing in North America. Annie is a singer-songwriter, old-timey banjo player, and vocalist with several bands. Peter worked closely with Pete Seeger to edit his autobiography Where Have All the Flowers Gone. Peter and Annie have been joined in concerts by scores of

leading folk musicians who have songs in their songbooks.

Please note:

This Music Committee concert is for Northampton Lathrop residents only.

In case of bad weather, the concert will move inside, following COVID rules with seats inside for 36 and 10 on the porch if it’s not too cold.

Reserving bad-weather seats will require signing up in advance. Stay tuned for more details in emails and cubbies.

LATHROP’S MILKWEED PRODUCES

BUTTERFLIES—AND PAPER! By Barbara Walvoord

We know that our Lathrop milkweed plants produce monarch butterflies, because milk-weed is the only plant the monarch caterpillars can eat. Monarchs are declining as farmers use Roundup-Ready crops so they can spray Roundup that destroys milkweed at their field edges. Lathrop’s milkweed has greatly in-creased since we began brush hogging mead-ows only in late fall, so the plants can produce seed. Also, several years ago, resident Roger Herman brought students from Lander-Grinspoon Academy to scatter milkweed seeds on our land.

Imagine my surprise a few months ago when Florence resident Donna Lilborn wrote me that she’d heard that Lathrop was part of the national movement to increase milkweed, and asked if she could collect some of our milkweed seeds to make paper. She did—ten bushels of pods. Then she separated the seeds from their fluff, which yielded two pillowcases full of fluff. She returned the seeds to us for scattering in our meadows, and made paper from the fluff.

She puts the fluff into a weak bleach solution to kill mold, then into a blender. The resulting pulp goes into a big vat of water, to which she may add sizing (starch) and the goo from okra, to make the paper more stable. Then, using a screen, she scoops up a layer of the pulp on top of the screen, getting the layer of pulp nice and even, and then flipping it onto a felt-like cloth--tricky. Then she presses the layer with a heavy-duty press, and dries it. The result is a pearlescent, arti-sanal paper, subtly textured with the milkweed fluff. If you’d like more information, or want to con-tact Donna, go to www.whiteleafpaper.com.

LATHROP LAND

SAVE THE DATE! Would you like to go for a naturalist led walk in Mass Audu-bon’s Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary? On October 6th at 2:00pm, the Lathrop bus will take a group to Arcadia. There will be two walks: a short, boardwalk walk or a longer walk for those who wish to learn more about the fall landscape in

the sanctuary. Don’t Miss out—Sign up NOW!
