PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE SINCE 1937 At Unitus Community Credit Union, we are dedicated to making our communities a better place to live, work, and raise families. To share our progress toward this goal, and to keep us accountable to the commu-nities we serve, we have prepared this first annual Community Impact Report.

For all they give each day, we owe special thanks to our members and employees. Their cooperative spirit enables us to mentor our youth, teach financial literacy to disadvantaged populations, improve the economic capacity of peoples in our community, and provide disaster relief to raise each other up in the toughest of times.

We also thank our allies in this growing movement. Countless nonprofits, local businesses and community partners worked hand-in-hand with us last year, generously investing time, money, and energy to make life better for the people in our community.

We set ambitious goals in 2018 and I’m proud to say we significantly exceeded them. In 2018, we invested more than $236,000 into our communities and our employees volunteered 2,861 hours with over 80 local organizations and nonprofits. We’re just getting started and look forward to making 2019 another great year of building strong and viable communities.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSINGWe believe everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. That begins with a stable and healthy place to call home. For start-ers, you’ll find Unitus employees volunteering at construction sites, swinging hammers, painting walls, and doing whatever else needs to get done. When we’re not rolling up our sleeves on site, we are addressing affordable housing by partnering with Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of DesMoine Affordable Housing Program and Habitat for Humanity.

CREDIT UNIONS FOR KIDSCommunity involvement is at the core of our mission at Unitus. It is a privilege to align with the remarkable charitable organizations we work with every day. Perhaps the one most near and dear to our hearts is Credit Unions for Kids (CU4Kids), which began at Unitus more than 30 years ago and has blossomed into a nationwide force. CU4Kids has raised more than $150 million for child medical care and is currently the third largest fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network which spans 170 Hospitals around the country.

STUDENT MENTORSHIPS We believe that engagement with our communities extends far beyond writing a sponsorship check. It involves investing our time, sharing knowledge, and being present for the people in our communities – especially those who just might change the world in the future. Here are a few ways we worked to inspire students in our communities:

210 volunteer hours dedicated to the Portland Rose Festival Foundation As the 2018 presenting sponsor, influential women from Unitus provided one-on-one mentorship for each of the 15 Court Princesses. They hosted princesses on job shadows, worked together at a volunteer service activity, and prepared them to manage their money with a Financial Workshop.

Volunteered for the David Douglas High School Mock Interview Program The program, which helps students prepare for real-world job interviews, impacted more than 366 students in 2018.

200 hours of employee mentorship with 39 Vestal School students As part of the Adopt a Class program, Unitus volunteers spent time with 4th graders at Vestal School in NE Portland. Vol-

unteers visited their classroom, exchanged letters with students, gifted them new books, and surprised the class with a field trip of educational fun at the Oregon Zoo.

920 hours spent with De La Salle High School student-interns Unitus participated in De La Salle’s Corporate Work Study Program, hosting four students throughout the school year at our headquar-ters in downtown Portland. The program gives economically disadvantaged students a chance to gain real-world work experience.

In 2018, Unitus donated over $35,320 through internal fundraisers, sponsorships, and by hosting our Summer Concert on the Plaza which raised $25,000 in just one day.

GLOBAL GIVINGPeople Helping People continues to be at the heart of what we do. It’s not just words or a catchy slogan, it’s a philosophy we put into practice locally and globally.

In 2018, we extended our philanthropic footprint internationally pledging $17,412 in support of the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions. $5,000 of this helped the significant efforts for the Busia Compassionate Centre located in rural western Kenya to build a safe structure around the orphanage to ensure the long-term security of its staff and more than 90 orphans and 150 foster kids.
