A Harrison County student has beennamed the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the HarrisonCounty Community Foundation 2011 LillyEndowment Community Scholar. KatelynMiller is receiving full tuition to attendHanover College and an $800 yearlystipend for required books and equipment. She is studying in the Pre-Med Program, majoring in Chemistry.
Katelyn is a 2011 graduate from North Harrison High School. She is thedaughter of Gerald and Karen Stewart ofRamsey. Katelyn graduated at the top of her class and was very active inRenaissance, National Honor Society,Academic Team, Future Farmers ofAmerica, and Fellowship of ChristianStudents. She was also active in 4-HEntomology, her church youth group, and has served as a church camp leader.
103 Harrison County graduating highschool seniors applied for this scholarship. A volunteer committee
of five former HCCF board members participated in a blind scoring process. The Scholarship Committee narrowed theapplicants to six finalists and conductedan interview of each in mid-February.The nominee and two alternates weresubmitted to Independent Colleges ofIndiana, Inc. (ICI), for the final selection.ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accrediteddegree granting, nonprofit, private colleges, and universities in the state.
The scholarships are the result of astatewide Lilly Endowment initiative tohelp Hoosier students reach higher levelsof education. Recipients are able tochoose to attend any Indiana college oftheir choice. Indiana ranks among thelowest states in percentage of residentsover the age of 25 with a bachelor’sdegree. There were 142 Lilly EndowmentCommunity Scholarships awardedstatewide to the Class of 2011.
After many hours of conversation andevaluating our operations, the HarrisonCounty Community Foundation boardagreed we were ready for several substantial changes; for the board, forstaff, and programs.
First, the board felt our policies hadmatured to the point where fewer members were needed on the board itself. At the same time, they wanted more ofour residents to play a role in our decision-making. The board will be down-sized from the original 21 membersto 17 in 2012,and lowered to15 for 2013 andbeyond. TheAdvisoryCouncil waseliminated atthe end of 2011and replacedwithCommunityVolunteers thatwill be servingon various committeeswith full votingresponsibilities(see back page). This structurewill continue to provide a ready reserve offuture board members with experience inour work.
Increasing grant requests, growingscholarship programs, and the need forenhanced fundraising efforts called formore staff to serve the community. Tobring in additional staff required morespace. Construction on a 1,500 square footaddition began in December to provideoffices, a meeting room, and storage.Construction is expected to be completed
in May.Long-time Program Manager, Julie
Timberlake, will become our Director ofPrograms. While continuing to overseeour grants programs, she will focus hertalents on scholarships, youth philanthropy, and other HCCF programs.
Anna Curts will be transitioning toGrants Manager in 2012 and a newAdministrative Assistant will join theteam. An experienced fundraiser will alsobe hired to fill the new position ofDirector of Development. More donors are
responding toour servicesand we need someoneavailable tohelp them fulfill theirphilanthropicneeds.
The boardalso agreed tore-evaluategrantmakingprocesses. In2012, a blockgrant program willdebut for thethree school
corporations. Each corporation will beallocated funds based on school enrollment and will submit how thosefunds will be used within the guidelinesprovided by HCCF. We hope this will help our schools in financial planning and better serve the learning needs of our children.
These and other changes phased induring 2012 should help us better servethe community in many new and excitingways.
Community Foundation Day Proclamation
Governor Mitch Daniels again recognized the important work of Indianacommunity foundations by proclaimingMonday, July 25, Community FoundationDay. Our state’s incredible communityfoundation infrastructure is part of a larger philanthropic sector. Together,Indiana’s 1,400 private, corporate and communityfoundations make a significant impact on ourstate’s economy, education, environment and people in need.
Though foundations oftenplay a role in times of crisis, they are more than emergency ATMs.Foundations actively strategize and worktogether to create a better future forIndiana communities. Where foundationsprovide added benefit is their strategicapproach to giving. It takes planning to beprepared to respond well to grim circumstances as they arise. Significantly,it takes even more effort to prepare for the
future. Community Foundation leaderstake it upon themselves to know the geographic regions in which they fund. They often focus their grantmaking on aparticular need or type of funding.
The Harrison County CommunityFoundation began operating in 1996 with
an initial gift of $5,000,000 fromCaesars Indiana now known asHorseshoe Southern Indiana. Withcontinuing contributions from theriverboat casino and other donors, total assets through December of2011 exceed $131,000,000 and over$50,000,000 has been distributed
in grants and scholarships. The very popular donation-match program has been available for eleven years, enhancingthe creation of more than 163 charitableendowments at the Foundation. Moreinformation on the Harrison CountyCommunity Foundation is available atwww.hccfindiana.org.

Dictionaries have multiple functions and purposes. Mainly they are an aid to learning about definitions of words, spelling, pronunciation, grammar, and contextual use of words in a written and spoken language.
Every third grader in Harrison County once again received a specialgift from the Harrison County Community Foundation. Over 500 studentswere given their very own “Webster’s Dictionary for Students SpecialEncyclopedic Edition” in September. A copy was also presented to classroom teachers and the school library. All Harrison County elementary schools are eligible to participate.
The Dictionary Project is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with the goal to assist students in completing the school year as goodwriters, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students withtheir own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each studentto use at school and at home for years to come. The Dictionary Project istargeted to 3rd graders because this is the age where children transitionfrom “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. With funding from variousorganizations throughout the state, The Dictionary Project provided over 45,000 dictionaries to students in the State of Indiana during the 2010-2011school year. This is a 45% state coverage estimate.

Connecting young people to our community is critical. We need to findways to engage them so they have a senseof ownership and belonging. The youthneed to know that they make a differenceand can contribute in positive ways to ourcommunity. Youth need to be challengedto be philanthropists by giving, serving, leading and engaging in the life and workof the community.
The Youth Philanthropy Initiative ofIndiana, (YPII) believes the principles ofdemocracy are rooted in these four
concepts; giving, serving, leading and engaging the “pillars” of youth philanthropy. As a community we need to continually encourage youth to give, serve, lead and be civically engaged. As acommunity, we need to ask ourselves howwell we are doing this. Do your youth feelinvested in the community? Do they feelappreciated for their gifts and talents andthat the community values them? Arethere ways for them to contribute and beengaged in the life and work of a community?
The Harrison County CommunityFoundation began the Youth asPhilanthropists program in 2010. Duringeight monthly meetings, 17 teens met tolearn about giving back and how theFoundation operates. They led their owngrant-making program and organized afund-raising dinner to support the work ofHarrison County Community Services.
The Youth Philanthropy Initiative ofIndiana, (YPII) is celebrating ten years ofgrowing lifelong philanthropists who givetheir time, talent, and treasure for the common good. It a statewide initiative partnering with more than 35 communityorganizations dedicated to engagingyouth in giving back to their communities. You can make a difference. Considerbecoming a Youth PhilanthropyAmbassador. Encourage youth
