Page 2: Community Happens Here annual report

Great ideas happen here. This year’s annual report is inspired by a 2012 TEDxGrandRapids talk by Dr. Andrew Dent, a materials scientist. He talked about products, materials, sustainability and second life—that is, something having a use beyond the original intention. This annual report and notebook is our eff ort to give a longer life cycle to our familiar product. Once you’ve read the stories and enjoyed the photos, you can tear off the Grand Rapids Community Foundation’s report itself and voilà, you have a nifty notebook. The paper is recycled and recyclable.

We hope the notebook and some of its prompts will inspire great ideas and actions.

DEAR FRIENDS,Is 90 years a long time? It depends on where you stand on the continuum. For people who lived through World War II, 90 years probably seems like a blink of an eye. For people just completing college or high school, 90 years may seem too far into the future to imagine.

Though Grand Rapids Community Foundation is 90 this year, we’re focusing not on the past, but the future. We’re positioning ourselves for our 100th year.

We believe the future happens here.

We launched our Challenge Scholars program, which provides academic and social supports for students at Harrison Park School. When students move on to Westwood Middle and Union High School the support programming continues —the end goal is helping them become college-ready. Students who stay with the schools and succeed are eligible for college scholarships. This multi-million dollar project has been in research and development for several years and is our most ambitious eff ort ever. We won’t see the results until the Community Foundation is over 100 years old—but we know it is worth the wait.

We changed our fund structure so that we are accessible to emerging philanthropists in the community. Research with donors and professional advisors told us that funds with more fl exibility would help us grow. As a result, donors can now open a Donor Advised Fund for a gift of $25,000 and can take fi ve years to fully fund it. We are also off ering an Unrestricted or Field of Interest Named Fund that starts at $10,000. Making these changes will help ensure our sustainability.

A signifi cant achievement for the Community Foundation this year was being named a full partner by Partners for a Racism-Free Community. For this designation, the Community Foundation had to demonstrate that it met six standards that contribute to a racism-free organization. We are committed to making our mark in the community around the issues of diversity, inclusion and being racism-free. We were absolutely honored to achieve this designation. We envision a community that is racism-free and will always work toward this goal.

In all, we made $11,029,762 in grants this year to benefi t people in Kent County. Besides the $250,000 grant for Challenge Scholars, we made other grants that will change our community landscape. We gave the Downtown Market $500,000 for planning and construction, and are excited to see how this project will grow and revitalize the Heartside area. Goodwill’s Recycling Transitional Work Project received $100,000 to help former prisoners transition into new lives. Goodwill will help these returning citizens with workplace training, a meaningful paid work experience, job placement services and follow up. You’ll read about fi ve more great grants in this annual report.

As always, our success is connected to our generous donors and excellent grantees. Without you and them, our work would not be as strong or meaningful. We thank you for reading this report and for your support of Grand Rapids Community Foundation.

Bob and Marcy Roth

“Anyone who lives here knows it is a great place to raise a family. All the small, family-owned

businesses contribute to a hometown feel,” Marcy said. She’s originally from Saginaw, but

has lived here since just after college, where she met Bob. Their adult kids hadn’t intended

to live in Grand Rapids but are now looking to return to their hometown.

Bob is president of RoMan Manufacturing Inc., a business his father and Robert Hofman

created in 1980. “The business is our anchor here. I’ve had opportunities to meet and learn

from great people who share and give of themselves, especially with nonprofit projects,” he said.

Recently the Roths established a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation. They

are building it over five years as part of the Fund in Five program. “My parents taught us that,

if you were blessed, you should share those blessings. For us, personally, we have an obligation

to give back,” Bob said.

Ric Roane

He grew up in Seattle, went to college in Hawaii, graduated from law school in Los Angeles and simply loves Grand Rapids, his adopted hometown. “I had this vision of moving to a small city, buying a brick house with a white picket fence. Grand Rapids has a wonderful sense of place. I’ve fallen in love with it,” said Ric, a family law attorney, partner and chair of the Family Law Practice Group at Warner, Norcross & Judd LLP. Janet Haynes, his former law partner and mentor, steered him toward the Community Foundation. Ric said, “I’ve come to trust its integrity, credibility and broad commitment to the community. I felt very comfortable making a provision in my estate plan. The Community Foundation will be here long after me to manage, grow and steward my gift.” Ric focuses his philanthropy on legal services for the underserved and the arts. “People providing scholarships 35 years ago made a diff erence for me. I want to pay it forward by giving back,” he said.

Friends of grand rapids parks

Steve Faber, director of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, wants people to get to know trees—in parks, along streets and in their yards. There’s value in a robust tree canopy. “A forty percent canopy is the best practice nationally. Local studies show we’re at about thirty four percent,” Steve said. Grand Rapids needs 200,000 new trees in both public and private spaces. “Trees do great things we don’t think about. They improve a city’s storm water management, help sequester carbon and reduce energy costs by shading yards and streets,” he said. Shaded streets cost less to maintain, and they stabilize or improve property values. A Grand Rapids Community Foundation grant from the Charles Evenson Fund for the Environment for $253,000 supports the Urban Forest Project. The resource center www.urbanforestproject.com helps citizens choose, plant and maintain trees. “The site has an open tree mapping project, so people can identify and map trees in their yard or neighborhood and map them online,” Steve said. The open tree map is the fi fth of its kind in the nation.

OTHER WAY MINISTRIES

Eneida Hernandez’ brown eyes sparkle as she talks

about her summer job at Other Way Ministries. “We do

mowing work and we get out in the community. We

went on college tours and met the mayor. We get to

learn, get to know new people, work on entrepreneur

projects, and we earn money to provide for our

families or our own future,” she said.

A visit to Grand Rapids Community College

resonated with her. “It opened my eyes and started

me thinking about what I want to do next, maybe

become a police offi cer or a physical therapist,”

said Eneida, a senior at West Michigan Academy

of Environmental Science.

Summer jobs in Grand Rapids were funded

by a two-year $400,000 grant from the

W.K. Kellogg Foundation that was managed

by the Community Foundation. In all,

400 students were provided with

jobs through 12 nonprofi ts.

grants

Making a Grant Request: Grand Rapids Community

Foundation’s Community Action Committee and the

Board of Trustees award grants six times a year, after a

comprehensive review by staff members. Grand Rapids

Community Foundation accepts pre-applications and grant

applications throughout the year. Minimally, grant applicants

must serve people in Kent County, be submitted by a 501(c)(3)

organization, and work in the areas of academic achievement,

arts and social enrichment, economic prosperity, vibrant

neighborhoods, healthy ecosystems and/or healthy people.

Our guidelines detail other criteria necessary for funding

consideration. Teacher and student minigrant applications for

classroom projects are submitted and awarded each fall.

Scholarships are processed in the spring with an early April

deadline for application and a June notifi cation date. To learn

more about submitting a pre-application or applying for a grant,

minigrant or a scholarship, please visit the Community

Foundation online at www.grfoundation.org or call 616.454.1751.

SCHOLARSHIPS

This year, a total of 1890 students applied for scholarships; 584 were awarded a total of $844,250 in scholarships.

Page 22: Community Happens Here annual report

Ben Kraft, Scholarship Recipient

“I just sat at the table and cried,” said

Ben Kraft. Two letters from Grand Rapids

Community Foundation arrived in the mail.

A year ago, a similar Community Foundation

letter told him he had not been selected for

an award. “When I opened them this year

I couldn’t believe it!” he said. The Grand Valley

State University nursing student received

two scholarships, the new Fred & Lena Meijer

Scholarship, an award of $10,000, and the

Violet Wondergem Health Science Scholarship

of $2,000. “I can barely express how much this

means to me. I didn’t know how I was going to

pay for the next four semesters of school.

Now I don’t have to worry. I can just focus on

school, my family and my future. My motto is

‘no excuses.’ I was the biggest impediment to

my success. Once I stopped accepting excuses

then things started coming together for me.”

The dad of three children (Jacqulin, Franklin

and Aubrey, who is pictured here) works

full-time at Meijer as a produce manager.

Colin Chelovich and Molly Tupper Chelovich

Molly didn’t think she’d return to her hometown, Grand Rapids, after college. “But my career with Merrill Lynch, which began with an internship, has always provided opportunities. When a position opened here, we thought, why not? It is very diff erent than when I was in high school, and it has been fun to get reacquainted with the town,” she said. “For me, Grand Rapids was a blank slate,” Colin said. Molly met Colin, a native Hoosier, when they were students at Butler University. “Growing up near Chicago, we had the ‘big-city-million-things-to-do’ feel. Grand Rapids has that same feeling, but is more tight-knit,” he said. “Our roots are planted here. Now it’s home to me,” Colin said. Molly’s client base continues to grow here in Grand Rapids; Colin is fi nishing a teaching degree and coaching high school football at Northview. As Big Changers at the Community Foundation, Molly and Colin make annual gifts to the Fund for Community Good. They are passionate about programs that benefi t education and the Alzheimer’s Association.

GERT AND EARL Visser

A church young people’s convention brought Grand Rapidian Earl Visser to Pella,

Iowa. At his farm homestay, a young lady named Gert caught his eye. “Yes, I was the

farmer’s daughter. I graduated from high school at 17 and taught fi rst grade that fall

in a small Christian school. For three summers I came to Calvin College for summer

school,” Gert said. She and Earl reconnected.

After Calvin, Earl went to medical school at University of Michigan. He and Gert

married in 1954. “We have been blessed,” said Earl. His anesthesia practice supported

the family and helped send their four children to Calvin College. All eight of their

grandchildren are now Calvin students.

The Vissers have a Donor Advised Fund with the Community Foundation. Their

charitable interests include Grand Rapids Symphony, Inner City Christian Federation,

Calvin College and Calvin Seminary. They also established a research scholarship

at Calvin to honor the memory of their son, Dr. Daniel J. Visser.

ELLEN JAMES

A Grand Rapidian since elementary school, Ellen James loves this place.

“It has helped me to be all that I can be,” she said. “I’ve been mentored

and encouraged by so many people to do the things that I do. Grand

Rapids has its problems—racism, sexism, class, economics and

gender—but many in the community are open to talking about them.”

Retired after 30 years with the City of Grand Rapids, she stays

active. Her involvement includes serving as a founding elected

member of the Grand Rapids Community College board of

trustees, Porter Hills Foundation board, and the City’s

Community Relations Commission. “In my work, I honor my

parents. They taught the importance of giving back to others,”

Ellen said. She helped lead an eff ort to bring the Rosa Parks

statue downtown, because Parks “was courageous and teaches

us to stand by our beliefs, even when it is not popular.”

At the Community Foundation, Ellen supports the

African American Heritage Fund.

Page 26: Community Happens Here annual report

It is an unlikely Field of Dreams—a deep, rutted gully near Rockford, surrounded by trees and brush. West Michigan Sports Commission has a vision, and with a $150,000 grant from Grand Rapids Community Foundation, they’re fi nalizing a capital campaign for a complex to host baseball and softball tournaments. “It will help develop our local economy through visitor spending,” said Mike Guswiler, executive director of the Commission. A growing number of youth engage in tournament softball and baseball, which requires regional travel. “Hundreds of families will stay in hotels and eat in restaurants for the duration of a weekend tournament. The complex will provide 12 fi elds for Little Leaguers to adults to play ball, as well as a fi eld that is designed for people with disabilities. An adjacent Plainfi eld Township property will also feature soccer fi elds, mountain bike trails and an indoor archery range; rounding out sports off erings,” he said. And that gully—it will be a sledding hill in the winter.

Bethany Refugee Health Services

Htee Khu and her family escaped unrest in their home country of Burma, now called Myanmar. They lived for 16 years in a refugee camp in Thailand, where daughter Lar Ka Du Paw contracted encephalitis, causing cognitive and physical impairments. “Warehousing refugees in large camps for extended periods of time, with few or no medical resources, has contributed to complex and chronic health issues,” said Elizabeth Smith, refugee medical coordinator at Bethany Christian Services. Refugees who immigrate to the U.S. are entitled to 90 to 180 days of health care case management. But Lar Ka Du Paw arrived in Grand Rapids in 2011 needing extended and specialized care. An $80,000 Community Foundation grant helped her and other refugees receive that care. “I do not fear anything,” Htee Khu said about her immersion into Grand Rapids. “There is much freedom and this is our home now.”

We are always thankful to our donors who believe in the Community Foundation’s mission and support it with generous gifts each year.

In previous annual reports we’ve included a list of our donors—and this year, the list is online. We have been considering this option for some time now and decided this would be the year to make the change. It will result in some cost and tree-savings. We think it is a good thing.

You can view this year’s donors at www.grfoundation.org/donorlist or scan this QR code with a QR code reader app on your smartphone.

about the community foundation:

gifts, growth, grants and leadership

Since 1922, Grand Rapids Community Foundation has

been the community’s leading foundation. Our grantmaking

is made possible by fi nancial gifts from donors—people

who care about Kent County and want to see it prosper

and grow. Our endowment is nearly $250 million and is our

sustainable source for fi nancial support for the community

now and into the future. We make about $10 million in

annual grants in six priority areas: academic achievement,

arts and social enrichment, economic prosperity, healthy

ecosystems, healthy people and vibrant neighborhoods.

We lead by bringing people together to solve complicated

community problems, realizing that, for some issues,

there are no fast solutions or easy answers. We’ve been

around for 90 years, and we’re willing to see a project

through over time.

Clients expect professional advisors to provide the same level of expert advice about philanthropy as they do regarding estate planning, trust or fi nancial services. Recent research shows that clients expect their advisors to bring up charitable giving as part of the planning conversation. When talking with a client about the sale of a business, closely held stock, an inheritance, or other complex transactions, advisors often suggest philanthropy as a solution. Grand Rapids Community Foundation can help facilitate these matters.

Many Grand Rapids philanthropists recommend the Community Foundation as the best choice because of our experienced staff , range of giving options, capacity to accept complicated assets and deep community knowledge.

For assistance, please contact Marilyn Zack, Vice President of Development, at 616.454.1751 x127. Our website also has resources for advisors under the Plan tab at www.grfoundation.org.

We recognize the 2011/12 Professional Advisory Committee for its work TO strengthen the Community Foundation and the community we serve.
