Hi everyone, welcome to our festive edition of Together Magazine.

In this issue, we highlight our Christmas Appeal #andhomeless.

I am humbled reading the figures about how many individuals and families face homelessness, particularly at this time of year. Whilst we look forward to seeing our relatives and loved ones, having some time off and relaxing around the Christmas tree, we must think of those who for whatever reason, are not so fortunate.

We recognise the great impact that not having a stable home has on families, high levels of debt and rent relative to income and being excluded from participation in the places where

people live. As per the Bishops Conference request, we will continue to make this work a priority up until 2030, working with partner agencies ecumenically, for the benefit of those of all faiths and none.

The appeal will raise vital funds for us to continue providing support through our New Beginnings project. The team that run the service help people move off the streets into accommodation provided by our partner organisations. The funds we raise will help provide the basics such as bedding, pans, cutlery and other necessary items that make a house a home.

You can read more on page 6, or go to wearenugent.org/andhomeless to donate and help us give people the gift of hope this Christmas.

This issue also reviews our third annual Strictly Nugent event which took place in October and raised an amazing amount toward the appeal. I must take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their time and dedication, particularly our superb amateur dancers who all went the extra mile to make the night so spectacular.

Enjoy reading the rest of the magazine, and please have a very restful and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.

The Place to Be at St John Stone Parish in Woodvale has now become The Community Food Market.

The Market gives people living in the area a chance to purchase their own food and supplies at reduced prices, and removes the stigma that can be associated with food banks.

The market works on a ticket system, and whilst people are waiting to go in, they can enjoy free tea/coffee, homemade soup and pastries.

Everyone has an opportunity to purchase a certain number of items i.e. two tins of beans, to ensure there is enough for everyone who needs it.

The Market is very popular, with approximately 60-80 people attending each week, with numbers rising.

We make weekly food collections on a Wednesday morning from the following supermarkets:

Tesco - Ainsdale (Bread and pastries)Co-op – Ainsdale and Formby (Bread, pastries, various crisps and sweets)Lidl – Southport (Bread, flowers, sweets and pastries) Items from these supermarkets are distributed free with a limited amount for each person, so everybody gets an opportunity to access this aspect of the market. We have 14 regular volunteers from the local parish who help with collecting, setting up and supporting the market on a weekly basis. Volunteers also spend time chatting with those who come along.

Thank you to those organisations and individuals who help make this happen.

For more information please contact Colin Pryor, Caritas in Nugent Volunteer Co-ordinator. [email protected]

The Community Food Market is supported by a number of local organisations:

MicahMicah very kindly bring surplus items they collect from supermarkets including food and new clothes. They charge from 20p to a maximum of £1.00 (some items to purchase from the store direct would cost up to £27.00 but would still be sold for no more than £1.00).liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/home/micah-liverpool.aspx

What Is Community Sponsorship?Community Sponsorship is a way to welcome and resettle refugees, putting local communities at the heart of a family’s journey to a new life in the UK. The community assumes responsibility for a refugee family, from first arrival through to settled independence as part of their local community.

Up and down the country, catholic parishes have formed community sponsorship groups and many have welcomed their first families. In the Archdiocese of Liverpool, we currently have five parishes who are involved in this project and Nugent is playing a key role in supporting and enabling parishes to do this work.

How does the scheme work? The two-year programme comprises three main elements; housing, funding and support.• Housing – Find and

prepare a suitable,

affordable family home• Funding – Raise a

support fund to cover additional needs

• Support – Plan and deliver a programme of resettlement support

After security screening, medical checks and initial preparation about life in the UK, sponsored families arrive with full refugee status and the right to work, school places, free healthcare, English tuition (ESOL) and State benefits. The scheme is inspired by a Canadian model, which has successfully resettled around 300,000 refugees since it began in 1978.

How is it effective?• Frequent and intensive

support by a committed group of volunteers

• Families benefit from the rich social capital of a whole community

• Strong bonds of friendship, mutual understanding and empathy

• Shared motivation and commitment to

successful resettlement

“The community sponsorship scheme personalises a huge, human drama, by enabling local communities to welcome and support refugees in a real and tangible way. This scheme opens a path for people to respond with compassion, providing welcome and integration, and should be taken up as widely as possible.” – Cardinal Vincent Nichols.

What can I do next?A more detailed guide to the scheme is available online at wearenugent.org/ service/caritas/ communitysponsorship/To arrange a discussion about the scheme, and for any further information, please send an email to [email protected]

The figures* speak for themselves:

• Over 307,000 people in Britain are homeless today, an increase of 13,000 in the last year alone, that’s more than the population of Newcastle.

• Over 4,700 people are estimated to be sleeping rough on any one night across the UK, a 15% increase on last year and a 169% increase since 2010.

• Rough sleeping in the North West increased by 39% since 2016, the highest in the UK.

• In the last year, over 440 homeless people have died on streets or in temporary accommodation in the UK (Oct 2017 – Oct 2018).

Homelessness is not just about not having a roof over your head, the long term impact on mental and physical health can make it harder for people to find support, and is having a major impact on our health care services.

Benefit cuts have left poorer tenants unable to pay the rent. In particular, the four-year freeze on housing

benefit in the private rented sector, called Local Housing Allowance, is pushing people into homelessness.

Homelessness affects people across society, in different situations and from all walks of life. This year we are raising awareness of four groups.

A Family and Homeless

• 150 families are made homeless in Britain every day.

• There are over 125,000 homeless children living in Britain today.

• In the last five years,

Donate to our Christmas Appeal this year and help us help people avoid homelessness

6 Issue 7 Christmas 2018

Page 7: Community Food Market takes flight in Woodvale€¦ · 08 Margaret Roper House 09 Christmas with Nugent pull-out 10 Gift Appeal 11 Christmas Cards 13 Light Up a Life 15 Hamper Donations

the number of homeless families living in temporary accommodation has increased by 48%.

• Single parent families comprise 63% of all families in temporary accommodation, an increase of 54% over the last five years, despite making up only 23% of families in England.

Retired and homeless

• In the last year, 2,520 people aged 60 and over were accepted as homeless.

• This is up by 40% in the last five years, and the highest number for over a decade.

Young and Homeless

• 4,981 young people, aged 16–24 are homeless.

• 92% said delayed payments under Universal Credit were having an impact.

• 49% of young people became homeless because of a relationship breakdown with their family or caregiver.

Working and homeless

• 55% of homeless families trapped in temporary accommodation are actually working, according to new research released by Shelter’s social housing commission.

• More than 33,000 homeless families are holding down a job, despite having nowhere

stable to live, up by 73% since 2013.

During winter, we need to be conscious of the individuals freezing in doorways, and of the families whose Christmas will be spent in cramped, temporary accommodation or hostel rooms with their children.

Through our New Beginnings Project, we help people across the city region by providing temporary accommodation, practical support and advice, which enables people to get back on their feet, live independently and move

on to their own permanent tenancy.

People often come to us with nothing, so our New Beginnings team provide starter packs of essential equipment to help them transition into temporary accommodation and permanent residence.

Margaret Roper House, in Birkdale near Southport, celebrates 30 years of providing care for people living with enduring mental health problems this December.

The home welcomed its first 23 residents in December 1988, and was officially opened in April 1989 by the then Mayor of Sefton Cllr Maureen Fearn, and blessed by Archbishop Worlock.

The Home provides nursing care for adults and still upholds the principals of care, helping adults to move out of hospital settings into more homely individualised surroundings.

Most recently, we have introduced two of the current residents to Together readers, Clive Anderson, and Sue Nuttall.

Clive, featured in issue five, is a poet and was proud to share one of his works with readers. He has lived at Margaret Roper House since 1996 and talks proudly of his home.

Sue, who moved in more recently in 2014, spoke to us in issue six about her work in the local community supporting the Food Market in Woodvale, which is featured on page 4 of this issue.

A big thank you to St John Stone & Sacred Heart RC Churches and their parishioners, for their recent donation and their

continued support of our work and our collaborative projects.

STAFF FOCUSAs the Quality Assurance Officer for Nugent’s Children’s services it is my job to support staff and managers on our journey to Outstanding and to ensure we demonstrate the positive and lasting impact our care provision has on children’s lives.

I joined Nugent three years ago and have found the organisation to be very receptive to change.

My job in six words...To help Nugent demonstrate positive impact.

Highlights of your role...... seeing the progress of change within the children’s services at Nugent.

Not many people know... ... I used to be Freddie Starr’s gardener!

My favourite possession...... my grandad’s guitar.

My hero/heroine...Chuck D from Public Enemy – he has been an inspiration to me now for nearly 30 years.

Mavis James raised an amazing £186 in September, by playing the piano in Liverpool One’s Tickle the Ivories event.

Mavis, who celebrated her 85th birthday in October, played as a gift to her daughter, Sue. She also has a bit of a celebrity past, having accompanied Liverpool’s very own Ken Dodd.

Mavis said: “I really enjoyed playing and it was great to get together with my family

and share some music to raise money for Nugent.”

Tickle the Ivories is Liverpool ONE’s piano busking festival which runs through July to September each year and features professional and amateur musicians, bands, community groups, choirs, musical theatre groups and school music groups/choirs.

Strictly Nugent 2018 sponsored by Lynbrook was such a fabulous event, we can’t stop talking about it.

The night was a spectacular celebration of dance and great fun, but we mustn’t forget the main aim of the event: This year we raised over £28,000 which will go to support our New Beginnings homeless project.

New Beginnings helps people across the region who are homeless or in danger of becoming so and will help provide the basics in home starter packs. You can read more about this project and about how our Christmas Appeal will help drive further donations to it on page 6.

So, thank you to everyone who has donated, via sponsoring the dancers, coming along on the night or sending in donations.

So what about the winners? The Judges award went to Jane Caven and Mike Manning who received four 10’s for their Quickstep and were highly praised for beautiful choreography. Jane is Managing Director at Sagegreen HR Cumbria & Lancashire. Her colleagues really got behind her and gave her incredible support in fundraising and also on the night. Jane said:

‘Two reasons for wanting to do it. The first and most obvious is to help Nugent who really do terrific work for a wide range of people in need. Secondly, because I have always wanted to learn to dance (and still do!).’

The Audience Award, voted for by our guests, went to Sarah Johnson and Matt Lane. They were the outright winners as well as second in the Judges’ Award, having received 39 points for their Lindy Hop.

Congratulations to both couples, and a massive thanks to all our amazing dancers who put in so much hard work and made the evening so fabulous, they are:

PHIL THOMPSON

GOLF CLASSIC

The annual Phil Thompson Golf Classic has always proved to be one of the best Charity Golf Days, with our host Phil Thompson there all day to make sure everyone has a great round of golf in the glorious surroundings of Houghwood.

The teams taking part and challenging Phil on the golf course have always been in good company. Over the last couple of years, we have been joined on the course not only by Phil himself, but also by ex-Liverpool players David Fairclough, Terry McDermot and David Johnson, and former Everton player Alan Stubbs.

Our after dinner guests across the last couple of years have also proved a big hit.

In 2017 we welcomed

Liverpool Legend Steven Gerrard who spoke candidly about his career, his support for local charities and working with the Academy players at LFC. He also gave some time for the teams to have pictures taken with him.

In 2018 Phil’s special Guest speaker for the evening was another Liverpool Legend, Jamie Carragher, who proved his credentials as a football pundit, talking about his Liverpool career, winning the Champions League and Liverpool managers that he has played under.

Phil’s Golf Classic is all about raising funds for our services, to help support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Our guests have always been very generous, helping to raise over £35,000 at the last two events alone.

A poignant donation was made recently to our charity shop on Allerton Road, a collection of personal artefacts from a local man who served in the First World War.

Within the items were medals received by the brave soldier, a British flag, official papers that accompanied the medals, as well as journals used by the soldier and other soldiers during the Great War.

We have some information about the soldier in question from the paperwork that accompanied the donation. We know his name was Peter Paul Keating and at the time of receiving his medals in 1926, he lived on Albert Road in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool, so he is local to where our central office is situated.

If anyone knows of this gentleman, or of his family, then we would love you to get in touch and tell us his story.

Please contact [email protected].

The items really do give a small snapshot of life for many of the men that served during this time and we would like to remember, as it is the 100th Anniversary marking the end of the First World War, this is a fitting tribute to all those who served and fought in the Great War and subsequent conflicts.Nugent’s charity shop on Allerton Rd, Liverpool is always looking looking for donations such as men’s and women’s clothes, bric-a-brac, toys, books and cd’s.Your donation to our shop will have a big impact on

people’s lives as all the proceeds go towards helping our services for people with learning disabilities, people who are Deaf or hard of hearing and our volunteer teams.Collection of heavy goods can normally be arranged for a Thursday.Any donations should be dropped off at the shop:73 Allerton Rd, Liverpool, L18 2DA Opening Hours: 9am – 5pm Monday to Saturdayor at: Nugent Central Office, 99 Edge Lane, Liverpool, L7 2PE.To arrange collection of items please call Jeanette on 0151 737 2951.

Sadly, one of our long standing volunteers, the

much loved Gerry Sweeney, recently passed away.

Gerry became a volunteer with Nugent prior to our shop opening over 10 years ago and had been a volunteer ever since.

Often working over 30 hours a week, he was committed to

the shop and was a loyal, dedicated member of the team that was respected by everyone. He battled cancer three times over the years and even during illness was rarely absent. Gerry will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know and work with him.
