Book Reviews Help Drive Sales FA21-076 ● Fri, 11/12/21 1 - 4 pm ● Online ● WebLive Book reviews can influence reader purchase decisions. Both librarians and booksellers rely on book reviews to choose among the thousands of titles published each year. Well-established and best-selling authors have a better opportunity to collect reviews. How does the first-time author garner reviews? You will learn about the many uses for your book reviews, and look at potential industry publications, loyal readers you collect, and blog sites. Amazon reviews will be given special attention. Should you buy a review from the many respected sources? Maybe. Contacting reviewers requires an effectively written query letter that we will discuss in class. We will also explore how to find and mine book contests for solid reviews. Diane Phelps ● $60

Creative Writing Exploration - Where Are You From? FA21-077 ● Fri, 10/15/21 1 - 3 pm ● Online ● WebLive In this exploration, we are examining our past (which is always present within us), looking at our childhoods, our beginnings, our roots. We are working at telling our stories, which we must do to survive them, learn from them, grow beyond them. We will discuss, journal, and consider this common question, where are you from? It is a question we are often asked, and we usually answer with a word or two – New York, Cleveland, New Mexico. But your challenge will be to answer it with a series of images, pictures, and memories. We will answer this question with images of family, of history, of ancestry, of conception – we will write and discover. To explore this question is to explore many things – your beginnings, your connections, your joys and struggles, the mystery and wonder of your life. Note: have a tablet or pen/pencil and paper and be prepared to do some writing during class time. Stacey Lane ● $55

Exploring Yavapai County: Historic Camp Date Creek Saturday, October 16 ● Trip ID #101621 Reserve by Oct. 1. In 1863, one of the early parties of gold-seekers traveling to the Prescott area followed an otherwise obscure desert wash eastward from the Colorado River. They discovered, on the way, what leader Abraham Peeples (after whom Peeples Valley is named) called a “Garden of Eden”. This drainage, rising high in the Weaver Mountains of western Yavapai County, became known as Date Creek, after the date-like fruit of the Yucca found along its course. Shortly after this a military post, Camp Date Creek, was established where the upper forks of the creek join, also an important early wagon road junction. This post was active into the early 1870s before being abandoned. We’ll talk about this early history (including a 1915 train wreck in the area), and about the Yavapai people displaced by settlers, while hiking into the old fort site and into part of the upper canyon of Date Creek, where water flows year- round. We’ll see ancient rock art in the canyon, and to the north of Date reek an interesting and little-known historic rock art site. About two miles total hiking, largely with no visible trail and some rocky and steep sections. Activity Rating 3. Instructor: Chris Wuehrmann $175 per person - Tuition includes transportation, box lunch and field instruction. Departs 8AM from Prescott Campus.
