01: Master Mechanic crew with their snowman made from tires. Good job boys!

02: Great Horned Owl photographed by Patrick Parent Photography.

Great Horned Owls are year long residents in Ontario, including this one found way up a pine tree in High Park in late January. Despite their large size, when perched in a tree 10 or more meters above the ground, they can be difficult to spot with their camouflaged plumage. They will be breeding soon, with owlets hatching in mid-April to early May. That’s when the female will be keeping the chicks warm and safe for a couple of weeks by brooding on the nest with them, while the male works to keep his family fed with a delicious exclusively carnivorous diet including mice, voles, squirrels, and even skunk if available. Because the owls have no sense of smell, the skunks main defence is useless against them. Look for pellets on the ground, a tightly bundled “sausage” of indigestible prey parts like bones and fur that they regurgitate a few hours after eating their smaller prey whole.

Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to see one perching during the day, as they usually only hunt during the night, from evening to dawn. A pair of binoculars will help confirm that that darkish lump high up on a tree is one of these magnificent birds!

ADD A POP OF

GRAPEFRUIT to DISHES + SALADS

PREPARATION TIME: 20 minutesYIELD: 8 cups (2 L)SERVING SIZE: 8 servings

Following a healthy diet doesn't mean that you have to eat the same dish every day. As the seasons change, so should your meals and the ingredients you add to them. Each season offers its own unique variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that can be added to recipes for a boost of freshness and originality.

“Winter is peak season for Florida grapefruit, the sweetest and juiciest variety of grapefruit in the world,” says Emily Richards, a home economist. “And that's just one benefit of this healthy, versatile ingredient that will tantalize your taste buds and provide nutrients to support good health. One-half of a Florida grape-fruit contains 100 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C, so this touch of natural sweetness in your meals will also help support a healthy immune system.

Florida's unique fertile soil and lush subtropical climate provide ideal growing conditions for grapefruit to thrive. Growers there have knowledge plus experience - and the lush citrus groves produce the fresh juicy taste that is inside every Florida grapefruit.

Richards reminds us that putting a salad on our menu is a great way to get the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables - and it's also a good way to experiment with in-season produce.

“Best of all, salads can be salty or sweet, hot or cold, and made with a variety of textures,” she points out. “The recipe for Florida Grapefruit and Jicama Vietnamese Salad, for example, combines flavours from Florida grapefruit, soy sauce and rice vinegar with the crunchy texture of Mexican jicama. It is a spiced up, refreshing salad, that is a great addition to serve alongside your favourite protein or fish. Using in-season produce makes this dish as fresh as it is flavourful.”

More information and additional recipes are available at www.facebook.com/FloridaGrapefruitCA.

I N G R E D I E N T S• 1 small Jicama, peeled (about 1 1/4 lb/600 g)

• 3 CUPS (750 ml) shredded Napa Cabbage

• 2 Florida Ruby Red Grapefruits, peeled and segmented

• 1 Carrot, shredded

• 1 CUP (250 ml) diced English Cucumber

• 3 TBSP (45 ml) Florida Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

• 2 TBSP (30 ml) each Soy Sauce and Rice Vinegar

• 1 large Clove Garlic, minced

• 2 TBSP (30 ml) liquid Honey

• 2 TSP (10 ml) Sriracha Chili Sauce

D I R E C T I O N SThinly slice jicama and stack slices. Cut into 2 inch (5 cm) matchstick size strips and place in a large bowl. Add cabbage, Florida grapefruit segments, carrot and cucumber.

In a small bowl, whisk together Florida grapefruit juice, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, honey and chili sauce. Pour over salad and toss to coat. Let stand 10 minutes before serving for flavours to develop.

a Healthy twist on a Classic

DESSERTA recent survey from Leger and Activia showed that Canadians aren't afraid to stir the pot: An impressive nine in 10 Canadian women say that cooking their own meals at home on a daily basis is their preferred way to eat a healthy and balanced diet.

Every grocery list should cover all of the essential food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy. Studies show that most of us don't get Canada Food Guide's daily recommended two to three servings a day. Yogurt is a recognized source of protein that can be incorporated into a recipe for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even dessert. The Activia Challenge is a delicious, simple way to incorporate dairy into your routine – and provide a daily dose of probiotics.

Preparing healthy recipes right at home often means no compromise on taste. Mairlyn Smith, professional home economist and cookbook author, recommends an easy way to transform Activia yogurt into a delicious trifle with this simple recipe:

As we celebrate the month of love, what better time to think about our most beloved family members….our senior dogs. Unlike their human counterparts, dogs don’t fret over a few grey hairs! But after a lifetime of love and devotion, we owe it to our faithful companions to keep them comfortable during their remaining years with us. Here are a few things to keep in mind when caring for a senior dog.

Cognitive Dysfunction – Also known as ‘Doggie Dementia’, Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) refers to age-related behavioural changes such as sleeping more, restlessness at night, increased anxiety, loss of housetraining and disorientation. Diagnosing CDS involves eliminating other medical causes. While we cannot ‘cure’ aging of the brain, we can slow the progression with supplements and even diets aimed at brain health. Mental stimulation is also important to keep the brain active. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks!?!

Arthritis – Wear and tear on the joints over time results in the development of arthritis. Similar to CDS, there is no ‘cure’ for arthritis but we can increase the comfort of arthritic animals. Ramps or steps assist dogs in getting into the car or on furniture, yoga mats or area rugs allow traction on slippery surfaces and slings provide support, especially on stairs. Supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin and/or omega fatty acids encourage joint health. Medications, in particular nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID’s), help alleviate pain. Consult your veterinarian before giving any medication as differences in liver metabolism can make human drugs (eg. ibuprofen) harmful to dogs. Bloodwork is recommended prior to starting NSAID therapy to ensure no concurrent liver or kidney disease that could alter your dog’s ability to metabolize this medication. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment can also be beneficial.

Loss of Senses – Reduced vision and hearing are common in our aging pets. Natural aging of the lens of the eye, called ‘lenticular sclerosis’, causes a cloudy appearance which can be mistaken for cataracts. This condition doesn’t cause complete blindness but can impact visual acuity. Dogs adjust well to reduced vision and will rely on other senses, especially smell, to navigate the environment. Avoid rearranging furniture and always leash your dog when outdoors. With impaired hearing, dogs are more reactive and may nip or growl when startled. Move slowly around older dogs and avoid surprising them, especially when sleeping. Hand signals can also be taught for communication (remember, you can teach an old dog new tricks!).

Urinary Incontinence – Previously well-trained dogs that are having accidents in the house could be suffering from cognitive dysfunction (see above) or may have mobility issues making it difficult to get outside. Medical conditions that may be contributing to incontinence, such as urinary tract infections or kidney disease, can be diagnosed with blood and urine testing. Dogs that unconsciously dribble urine when resting may have a leaky urethral sphincter. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to tighten the sphincter and minimize dribbling.

Remember, age is not a disease! While older dogs are more prone to certain illnesses, we must avoid attributing changes in behaviour or activity level simply due to age. Annual, or even semiannual, veterinary visits can address these changes and may uncover previously unknown health issues. While our senior pets sadly won’t live forever, our goal is to keep them comfortable and maintain their quality of life for as long as possible. They deserve extra patience and care from us in exchange for a lifetime of loyalty!

say hello toNALA & LILY

T e a m c a t r e s c u e . c a

Nala and Lily are two of the sweetest cats that are looking for

homes. Nala and Lily are on the younger side, around 2 or 3

years old - teenagers really! They were abandoned - and like

every abandoned animal we see, they didn’t deserve to be

dumped. They are wonderful girls, very affectionate, loving and

sweet as can be.

Lily loves to sit on your lap. She will pick one person and follow

them around the house. Her favourite game is jumping at your

hand while you scratch from under the blanket. She’s great with

all animals, not just cats. She has a mild allergy issue that is

easily controlled with regular medication. Nala is just as sweet

and loves laying on you and will roll over for belly rubs.

While each girl arrived to the rescue separately, they fell in love

when they were brought together. Because now they love each

other so much, we’re looking for a home where they can be to-

gether. They found love in each other… now they need to find

another kind of love, with you perhaps?

If you’re thinking of adopting… these might just be the ones for

you. Nala and Lily, available now through Team Cat Rescue.

Please email [email protected] to fill out an application!

If you want to give Lily and Nala all the love and happiness

they have both been waiting for, please contact us at
