As noted on the city zon- ing codes, “It is the responsibility of the occupant or owner of a property to cut and remove all weeds and grasses that are over 8 inches in height on developed property. Weeds and grasses outside rear and side fences to curb and from center line of the alley to rear yard must also be removed.” Also in regards to landscaping “ Front and side yards on existing developed properties visible from the street must have plants, shrubs, turf and other land- scaping in healthy condition. Barren soil, patches of dirt and weeds are not consid- ered approved landscaping material.” Proper maintenance of yards and landscaping not only enhances the visual experience of the neighborhood but will decrease the hiding places for rodents and other vermin that could be a health risk for our pets and children. August 2019 Vol. 12 No. 08 • Circulation: 2085 Another Successful Dumpster Day On Saturday, June 29th more than twenty two and a half tons of trash was collected from residents who participated in this year’s first dumpster day. Had members had to pay the normal fees at the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site, their costs would have been more than $5670. The HOA covered the entire cost of the event which was about $1200. This tradition again resulted in many HOA members cleaning out garages, basements, yards and other places trash (and treasures) have collected. Items ranged from tree branches and yard waste to swing sets, BBQ grills, and even a piano. Almost nothing was turned away from the 81 loads of trash received. Pro Disposal (now Waste Connections) provided two trucks and drivers, Jose and Alden, to collect unwanted items. We especial- ly thank Brenda Tompkins, Rich Ferris, Fiona and Ryan Biggs and Logan and Dave Goss for helping during the four hours of that Saturday morning. By 11:30 a.m. the last truck was filled and the parking lot cleaned up. Our next Dumpster Day will be on Saturday, October 5th from 8:00 a.m. to Noon or until the trucks are filled. Second Landscape Cleanup Day for Beautification Grant The corner of South Chambers Way and East Quincy Avenue looks great! It will be even better when work is completed with Beautification Grant funds. On June 15th nine volunteers did landscape cleanup on the east side of the inter- section. (The first workday was on April 26th on the west side of this intersection.) Scrub trees were cut, junipers were trimmed and weeds were pulled. Twenty- two giant trash bags were filled and hauled off. Much was accomplished by these very hard-working volun- teers in only 3 hours! It seemed like some must have had hay bailing experience from another life from the way they could toss large bags and branches around! Some limbs were left behind and just cleaned up in conjunction with Dumpster Day on June 29th. You can actually see the Mission Viejo entrance wall now! AUGUST

Volunteers, continued from front page

Beautification Grant…2019 We are thrilled to announce that the city of Aurora has awarded the Mission Viejo neighborhood $1,800 to complete the work on the east and west side of Chambers Way where they intersect with Quincy. Work has already begun on the project. On April 26, six residents spent four hours pulling weeds and trimming bush-es and raking the west side of Chambers Way corner. The article in this newsletter shows the volunteers that helped clean up the corner in front of Trinity Baptist church on June 15. There is still more work to complete the projects. The brick needs repair in front of Trinity Baptist and a contractor will be hired to do that work. The walls on both sides of Chambers Way are going to be painted sometime in September. If you like to paint please let [email protected] know and you will be con-tacted about the dates. Another company will remove the cement pallet that is lying on the ground on the west side. The weeds are being sprayed by Ironwood Earthcare; and it is apparent that work is being done. That corner has looked terrible for years! On August 10, the work on the west side of Chambers Way will be completed by volunteers. This will involve raking, pulling weeds, digging up yucca plants and removing them or relocating them. We would like to have at least 10 to 15 peo-ple on that day to help complete the project. The work will begin at 8:00 am and should finish by noon. Again, please let Elaine Lay know if you would like to help in this important project!!

Ask These Questions Before Giving Pocket Money Giving children some pocket money can help teach them financial responsibility at an early age, but it can be tricky. The ABC Life website shares these questions parents should ask before starting out: • Why are you giving pocket money? You may

want to show them the value of money, encour-age them to start saving, preach the importance of delaying gratification, or highlight the value of work.

• What habits and values do you want your children to develop? Having pocket money can teach kids how to budget, make decisions, and spend wisely.

• How involved will you be? Think about how much input you want to have in how children spend their money. You might require them to put some away for savings, for example, or to veto any especially frivolous purchases.

• What problems do you foresee? Think about what could go wrong. Your kids might lose their money, for example, or spend it all on candy.

• How long will you do it? At some point you may want to stop giving children pocket money for nothing and instead start paying them for specific chores around the house.

A Green New Plan The Danish island of Bornholm has big plans for the years ahead. With a population of 40,000 and annual tourist visits of about 600,000 a year, this 227-squaremile island, located in the Baltic Sea, is striving toward a circular economy. Rather than allocate money for the improvements to its current waste management system, the island government closed it and began moving toward a sustainable future that would have the island garbage-free by 2032. One of the main people driving this charge is the CEO of the waste management facility. With the backing of the deputy mayor and the island’s leaders, plans are being developed that will make it the first municipality to recycle and reuse everything. They are working to develop solutions that will make recycling practical and easy for residents to adopt, and for tourists to understand and abide by. There is also a focus on the businesses that provide goods and services and the changes they will need to make for the island’s environmental future. Other components of Bornholm’s “Bright Green Island” agenda call for eliminating its carbon footprint by 2025, increasing its organic farm-land, and completely converting to green energy sources. There is an educational aspect to these plans, calling for additions to the curriculum for teaching school-age children about environmental sustainability. The local university is even creating a research center focused on circular economies and transitioning to green practices. The current policy in Denmark has been urging households to recy-cle 50% of their waste by 2022. Bornholm’s plan for a circular economy is one where nothing goes to waste and neighbors barter, sell, or lease unwanted items and become more mindful of their consumerism. It’s a long-term commitment the people of Bornholm are willing to make.

of the neighborhood. • Writing and applying for and carrying out Beautification

Grants from City each year, used to improve Mission Viejo’ appearance.

• Neighborhood garage sale advertisement. • Newsletter each month. • Dumpster days twice a year. • Paper shredding and electronic recycling once a year. • Holiday hay ride. • Volunteer appreciation celebrations. • Care of Mission Viejo Garden in the Park. • Supporting nearly 1,000 neighbors using Pro Disposal

Viejo. • Adopt a Street program for picking up trash. • Working with residents to enforce covenants to keep

the neighborhood from looking unkempt, which affects property values and home sales.

• Making slump block available for purchase to people with damaged walls.

• Welcoming people to the neighborhood with informa-tion about the community and cookies.

• Participating in the City’s Access Aurora Program to enforce city landscaping and parking codes.

• Setting up holiday decorations each year at major entrances to the neighborhood.

• Participating in National Night Out program to increase safety awareness.
