RUNNER BEAT ISSUE—139 APRIL 2018
Community Affairs Section
A campus safety publication for the UTSA community
Be there…
As a friend to support.
As a bystander to intervene.
As a Roadrunner to
change the culture &
end sexual violence.

On Tuesday, April 3rd several UTSA student organizations,
university departments, and local agencies came together to
raise awareness and educate students about sexual violence.
Attendees participated in interactive games and activities.
Examples of how to be an active bystander were evident. An active bystander is someone
who recognizes a harmful situation, chooses to respond, and takes action to intervene or
share the concern. Learn more at www.www.utsa/beaksup. Each table addressed a differ-
ent topic surrounding sexual violence. Along with bystander intervention, the following were
presented; what is victim blaming, what to do if your friend confides in you, how alcohol
and drugs play a role in sexual assault and violence, how to report a sexual assault, and
resources and services available to survivors. Though this is a difficult topic to discuss,
over 400 attendees learned how to empower their voice and others, decrease victim blam-
ing, and took the “It’s on Us” pledge to end sexual violence on our campus.

Chances are someone in your
life has experienced sexual
violence. The way you speak
about the issue can make a
big difference to them .
#SupportSurvivors
Sexual violence thrives when
it is not taken seriously and
victim blaming goes un-
checked. Use your voice to
prevent it.

Do you know the statistics?
8 out of 10 survivors of sexual
assault knew the person who
assaulted them.

In 2017, there were 5,588 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in Bexar County. While that number
is certainly staggering, it’s just as shocking to learn that only 1 in 10 sexually abused children ever make an
outcry, meaning thousands more children in and around San Antonio are victims of abuse, typically by
someone the child knows, loves, and trusts.
To bring awareness to this incredibly urgent issue, ChildSafe created the Cardboard Kids Campaign.
Cardboard Kids are 2-foot tall cardboard figures shaped like children that represent one of the thousands of
children that are abused and neglected at the hands of adults in our community each year.
If you see a Cardboard Kid around San Antonio, please read the information on the back, then take a pic-
ture of the Cardboard Kid and share him or her on your favorite social network with the hashtag
#CardboardKidsSA.
