Hello and welcome to Middlesex North West County’s 100 years of Discovery and Adventure in 2010. Whether you are five or 105 you will enjoy participating in these challenges.
They may be completed on your own, as a family, with a friend or as a unit. In order to earn the badge you have
to gain 100 stars. You must complete at least five challenges from each section.
Point scheme- 5 stars = Unit/Family, 3 stars = Friend, 2 stars = Individually
Each point must be witnessed by an adult. When you have gained 100 stars fill in the record page on the back cover and get your Guider to sign it. They will make a copy of your stars and send off the unit record sheet.
We hope you enjoy learning how much fun Guiding can be!

CHOOSE FROM EITHER CHALLENGE A, B OR C
Challenge A
You will need:
Medium-size clay flower pot Adhesive tape Coloured wool String Nails of varied sizes Scissors Aluminium pie tins Hole Punch
What to do:
1. Cut out various shapes from the foil such as hearts 2. Hole punch them at the top.3. Put 2 or 3 shapes on a length of wool about 30cm, space them out by
using knots. 4. You can also hang the blunt nails on lengths of wool. 5. The lengths of wool can differ. 6. When you are happy tape the various lengths of wool to the inside of
the pot. 7. Test it for sound and security by holding it upside down. 8. Using string and the hole in the top of the pot make it hang upside
down.
Challenge B- Pinwheel
Supplies needed:
2 pieces of construction paper (the thicker the better)
Scissors A hole punch Split pin A pencil with an eraser Markers or crayons
Start by making two square pieces of paper. To start making a square, put the two pieces of paper together. Fold the corner of the pieces of paper over as shown.
To finish making the squares, cut off the small rectangles, forming two squares (which are already folded into a triangle).
Fold the triangle in half.
Unfold the paper.
Decorate one side of each sheet of paper.
Put the undecorated sides of the paper together.
Make four cuts along the fold lines – about halfway to the centre.
Punch four holes in the pinwheel, one at each corner.
Gently gather each of the four points (with a hole) to the centre. (Be careful not to crease the paper.)
Push a split-pin through the four punched holes through the centre of the pinwheel to attach the pinwheel to the side of a pencil’s eraser.
Challenge C
Make a Wind Sock
You can use a wind sock to find out where the wind comes from.
Make the wind sock by following the instructions on the drawing. Tie the wind sock to the top of a pole.
Using the wind sock and the compass you can now measure the wind direction. You can also see how much wind there is, by looking at how high the wind lifts the wind sock.
If you want the wind sock to be weatherproof, you can use plastic bags or nylon fabric instead of paper.
