Robotic hair restoration cure for baldness by Dr. MemarBY J.V. LAKSHMANA RAO

Chicago: In the process of self-grooming, notwithstanding genderdivide – both men and women arevery conscious of having luxurioushair. People use all types of oils, lotions, gels and creams whenthey notice that their hair showssigns of falling. The concern is moreamong the youth and middle-agedpeople. The youth, particularly the aspiring

actors and actresses; and prospectivegrooms and brides get conscious oftheir hair. Of course there were timeswhen some men used to pride them-selves that receding hairline or grow-ing bald is a manifestation to be rec-ognized as scholars or men of wis-dom. Even some young baldingmen hardly bothered about it andthe elderly used to feel reconciled toit with the thought that balding was anatural way of aging. Of course women would never wel-

come it and even the slightest signsof falling hair makes them nervous, not to think of getting ever bald.Since the time immemorial hair-styling has been recognized as an artby women, and the women with longhair feel proud and recognize it as agift of God. The famous Indian her-itage Ajanta and Ellora cave frescopaintings depict women in severalhairstyles. Times are fast changing and more

men and women are growingconscious about their hair. Affluenceand modernity have brought withthem a psyche among men andwomen to look good. Hairstyling isbecoming a major part of expressionof personal grooming and presenta-tion. Therefore, balding is unwelcome for

men or women; for the youth or eld-erly. Along with growth of cosmetol-ogy in the modern medical science, the science of arresting hair falling, restoration of hair and treating bald-ness with hair transplantation hasassumed as a specialty branch. Thelatest development of science of robot-ic surgery has been of great help intreating baldness. Dr. Omeed Memar, a Chicago-based

dermotological surgeon, who has beensuccessfully treating balding patients, has specialized in alternative hairrestoration method (ARTAS) surgicallywith the help of a computer controlledhighly sensitive robot. In an interview, Dr. Memar tells

India Tribune that men and womenexpress utmost concern about goingbald. For many of them, it is numberone concern. The concern is evenmore among prospective grooms withreceding hairline or growing bald.Among patients he deals with, he says, there are many young men with bald-ness, who have postponed their mar-riage trials. Some balding executivesalso come to him for treatment toenhance their personality. Quoting

statistics, he says about 35 million menand 21 million women experience hairloss. He says that patients come to him

from all over the world for robotic hairtransplantation at his state-of-the-art

medical facility. The robotic hair trans-plantation, he says, is a simple andpainless procedure. With the help of ahigh precision robot that he uses, hecan insert as many as 2,000 hair folli-cles in one day. The recovery time isvery fast and most patients return towork and other activities within a fewdays. The results are natural lookinghairs that have been transplanted andare permanent in nature lasting for alifetime. The hair transplantationgives a patient fuller and younger-looking hair.He assures that the procedure done

with the help of a modern robot elim-inates the drawbacks typically associat-ed with older transplant methods. There are neither stitches nor tell-talelinear scars. The transplanted hair ispatient’s own hair that grows naturally, which can be cut for styling, and eventhe barber does not know the differ-ence between the transplanted hairand the natural hair. The transplanta-tion can be done with a large numberof follicles in a short time, or moregradually for a less jarring transforma-tion. He assures that this whole modern

and sophisticated procedure is pain-less and leaves no awful scars or stitch-es. It can be performed on people –both men and women – of all ages. “Ittakes a few hours to get your hairback,” he adds. When asked what made him to spe-

cialize this rare but developing robotichair transplantation procedure, hesays that his passion for hair trans-plantation goes back to the 1990s,when he started losing his own hair. When asked what causes hair loss

or balding, Dr. Memar says that itis 99 percent genetic. The othercauses for hair loss or growing baldare environmental effect, skin

irritation, hormonal imbalance, useof wrong shampoos, hair oils andsunscreens. Stress caused by 3-Bs isalso one of the factors. The threestress-causing Bs are — Bereavement,Bankruptcy and Breakups.

Stating that protein-rich diet is impor-tant for healthy hair, he says that sincehair is the extension of nervous system, for lush hair growth the body needsadequate supply of protein. Ideally, a

person needs 40-50 grams of proteindaily for healthy nervous system andhealthy hair growth. Dr. Memar is an active clinical assis-

tant professor at NorthwesternUniversity and medical director of

Academic Dermatology and SkinCancer Institute. He is certified bythe American Board of Dermatologyand is a member of the AmericanAcademy of Facial Plastic andReconstructive Surgery. He graduat-ed from the University of TexasMedical Branch with an “M.D.,Ph.D.” in the field of immune-pathol-ogy of skin, with an extensive hands-on experience in pathological prepa-ration and examination of skin tissue. He started his residency training indermatology at the University ofIllinois at Chicago, where hewas trained by leaders in the field ofdermatology, dermato-pathology,hair biology and dermatologic sur-gery.
