William Caxton was the first person to bring a printing press to England in the year 1476. The

printing press meant that books no longer had to be written out by hand which took a long time and made books very expensive. The printing press allowed books to be made quickly and cheaply. This meant everyone

was able to access books for the first time.

Can you remember some of the ways in which the printing

press changed people’s lives?

Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor of the world wide web. The web allows us to use the internet to find out all sorts of information from different web pages. It also allows us to send and receive emails, and to connect with people anywhere in

the world.

Can you think of some ways that the web has changed

people’s lives?

I started my career as a merchant. I travelled from place to place in ships and in horse-drawn carriages.

I learned lots of new things as I travelled.

Absolutely right! It was

William Caxton.

What made you guess that it was William Caxton and not Tim Berners-Lee?

Oh dear! That wasn’t the right answer!

It was William Caxton who was a merchant. Tim Berners-Lee would have travelled in cars

and aeroplanes if he was a merchant.

It was Tim Berners-Lee who enjoyed playing with electric trains. Electronics hadn’t been

invented when Caxton was alive.

When I want to send a message to a friend, I write a letter, seal it with wax and pay a messenger to take it to the right person. If the seal has been broken when it gets to the other

person, I know the messenger opened the letter.

It was William Caxton who sealed his letters with wax. Tim Berners-Lee can send emails, text messages, letters in the post or

can just phone or text the person he is trying to contact.
