INTRODUCTION
• The term communication in simple words means sending or receiving information.
• ANCIENT TIMES – • Beating drums• Smoke signals• Mirrors reflecting sunlight
• The advancement of computer networks and later internet acted as a boost for data communication.
3
DATA COMMUNICATION
• Exchange of data between two devices using some form of wired or wireless transmission medium.
• Data communication consist of following concepts
• Communication system• Communication channel• Communication processors
4
COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
• The collection of hardware and software that facilitates intersystem exchange of information between different devices.
5
COMMUNICATION CHANNEL
• Communication channel is a pathway over which information can be conveyed. It may be defined by a physical wire that connects communicating devices, or a radio, laser, or other radiated energy source that has no obvious physical presence.
6
COMMUNICATION PROCESSORS
• Communication processor is an obsolete term for a specialized I/O processor that is used to control a number of communication lines and/or communication
devices.
7
COMMUNICATION HARDWARE
• Communication hardware as the name suggests it refers to those physical components that help in the flow of data from one resource point to another.
• Consist of following points• Communication channel• Communication channel media• Channel interface devices• Communication Protocol
8
COMMUNICATION CHANNEL
• A communication channel, or channel, refers either to a physical transmission medium such as a wire or to a logical connection over a multiplexed medium such as a radio channel etc.
9
Channel Characteristics
• Channel bandwidth• Channel Capacity• Transmission Time• Propagation Time
10
CHANNEL MEDIA
• Communication channel media refers to those physical or virtual connections through which communication signals are transferred from one location to another.
• Two types of media• Guided media• Unguided Media
11
CHANNEL INTERFACE DEVICES
• Communication channel interface devices refer to those devices that send and receive communication signals from one place to another.
• Examples are Router Modem etc.
12
COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL
• A communications protocol is a formal description of digital message formats and the rules for exchanging those messages in or between computing systems
