Your Lifestyle Training Program group will meet once a week for 16 weeks, then once a month for 6 months to maintain your healthy lifestyle changes. Most participants enjoy the group support and find it makes lifestyle change easier. One participant said, “I’ve tried so many things before, but without the program I would never have done this on my own.” The Lifestyle Training Program is based on research that found people with prediabetes can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight. That is about 10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds. If you had your hemoglobin A1c checked during the Health Fair and your result was between 5.7-6.4 or your glucose was between 100-125 and you are not currently taking any diabetes medications, you may qualify! Each year, an estimated 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and, of those, about one-third will die as a result of the cancer. But cervical cancer is also a highly preventable and treatable cancer, thanks to improved screening and

vaccination.

The American Social Health Association (ASHA) and the National Cervical Cancer Coalition have named January Cervical Health Awareness Month to encourage women across the country to get screened for

cervical cancer and receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine if they’re eligible.

Today, detection tools and inoculations make cervical cancer a condition that is relatively easy to prevent and treat. In women who are not vaccinated and not screened regularly, either due to a lack of information or inadequate health care, cervical cancer can still be a serious, even fatal, illness.

“Science has put us in a remarkable position to protect women from cervical cancer, but technology is only half the battle,”

said ASHA president and CEO Lynn Barclay. “It’s imperative we continue efforts that not only promote greater access to health care, but that we also inform women about cervical cancer and the marvelous means we now have to prevent this disease.”

This year, the organizations are focusing on increasing the number of eligible women getting the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. HPV is common among women and is the main cause of cervical cancer. It’s estimated that at least 75 percent of the reproductive-age

population has been infected with one or more types of genital HPV. In the vast majority of cases, the virus causes no

symptoms or health problems and goes away on its own when a healthy immune system clears the infection. But, in about 5

percent of women, a persistent infection occurs with high-risk strains of HPV, which causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.

I’ve heard about “the winter blues.” Is that a real thing? What should I do if I feel blah during the winter?

Many people feel slight depression during the winter months due to lack of sunshine and inability to comfortably be outside.

There are several ways to lessen the effects of seasonal depression.

Keep your blinds open during the day. Let as much natural light into your home as possible.

Keep moving. Exercise releases mood-enhancing endorphins.

Limit your caffeine. Caffeine spikes your insulin levels and drops blood sugar levels, contributing to a sense of fatigue.

If this doesn’t work for you, make an appointment to see your primary care physician to discuss your options.

Architectural plans are being finalized for a new medical clinic in Sutton. In May 2014, Henderson Health Care purchased property on the east side of Sutton along Highway 6 in order to develop a 5,500 square foot medical building to enhance the medical services provided to the community. The building is designed to meet the increasing volume of patients as well as bringing more services on site for the convenience of the patients. The new design will offer 6 exam rooms, procedure room, along with an expanded laboratory and radiology services on-site.
