    for the 2013Commonwealth Youth

    Awards for Excellencein Development Work.

    FAQ for the CommonwealthYouth Awards for Excellencein Development work

    Who funds the awards?The Commonwealth Youth Awards forExcellence in Development Work are fundedby the Commonwealth Youth Programme(CYP) of the Commonwealth Secretariat.The CYP works with 54 Commonwealthmember countries through four regionalcentres based in Africa, Asia, the Caribbeanand the Pacic.

    How many awards are given each year?16 regional nalists each year, four from

    each region. There will be four nalists perCommonwealth region with the top entry fromeach region receiving a Regional Winner Awardand the top regional winner receiving the PanCommonwealth Award.

    What will the winners receive?There will be four nalists per Commonwealthregion with the top entry from each regionreceiving a Regional Winner Award and thetop regional winner receiving the PanCommonwealth Award. The regional nalistswill each receive a 1,000 grant, a trophyand a certicate. The regional winners willreceive an additional 2000, a trophy anda certicate and the Pan Commonwealthwinner will receive an extra 2000, a trophyand a certicate. The Regional Winners fromeach region will be invited to receive theirawards at an ocial ceremony.

    Who is eligible to receive the award?Young people from the Commonwealth agedbetween 15 and 29 years are eligible for theawards. Grants will be awarded to advancethe work of the winners projects, with supportfrom CYP on the best way to use funding.

    Development work can be in anynumber of areas, including: Agriculture, small enterprise, skills training;

    Arts and culture;

    Education, peer education;

    Enterprise development/youth employment;

    Climate change/environment protection;

    Health and wellbeing, including work on HIV/AIDS ;

    Human rights and democracy;

    Information and communications technology;

    Journalism, media, public awareness;

    Peace building;

    Science and Technology;

    Sport for Development and Peace; Sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction.

    Criteria: The nominee must have been engagedin development work for more than 12 months,either in a professional or voluntary capacity;

    The development work must be ongoingand in a Commonwealth member country;

    The nominee must be a CommonwealthCitizen and should not be older than29 on 31 December 2013;

    Individuals cannot nominate themselvesin a personal capacity;

    Nominees should give permission for theirnames to be forwarded;

    Winners must agree to take part in publicitygenerated by the Commonwealth.

    Awards will be decided on the basis of: Quality of impact;

    Level of innovation/fresh approachesto problem-solving;

    Quality of achievement by the nominee;

    Quality of the evidence provided.

    Sustainability: building the capacity of futuregenerations to meet their own needs.

    There willbe four f inalists

    per CommonwealthRegion, with the Winner

    from each regionreceiving a Regional

    Award; the top entrywill receive the Pan

    Commonwealth

    Award.

    How will know if my nominationhas been received?We will respond to each nomination receivedwith a conrmation email.

    How will award winners be notifed?

    Finalists will be contacted directly. If you donot hear from us, it means that your nominationhas not been successful. Regional nalists willbe ocial announced on 30 August 2013.

    What if I do not know the contactdetails of the person I am nominating?Please make every eort to provideas much contact information as possible.We require either an email address

    or telephone number.

    How can I submit additionalinformation on nominees?Additional information can be uploadedin the space provided on the entry form.

    Should I mail or fax my nomination form?No. Nominations can only be received viathe email link provided. If you are having problemwith the online online form, you may cut andpaste the information in a word documentand send to the email address provided.

    Who will decide on regional finalists?Nominated persons will be shortlistedat the CYP regional centres in Zambia forAfrica, India, Asia, Guyana for the Caribbeanand the Solomon Islands for the Pacic region.For these purposes Cyprus, Malta and UK are

    included in the Africa region and Canadais included in the Caribbean region.

    The panel to select the regional nalists willcomprise two government representatives,two representatives from the Regional YouthCaucus and the CYP Regional Direc tor.

    The Regional winners and the Pan Common-wealth Winner will be determined by a panelunder the chair of the Deputy Secretary-General.The Panel will comprise representativesof Commonwealth Governments (through HighCommissions), Commonwealth Civil Society,Youth leaders and the Director of Youth Aairs.
