another provisional promotion, shall be dependent upon the latter being confirmed. Appeals should be lodged, either by letter ortelegram, with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector in the State in which the promotion is to be made, or, if the promotion is tobe made in the Australian Capital Territory, with the Public Service Inspector -at Canberra, within fourteen days of the date of thisnotification. (c) Use of gauges ( various) ; reducing metals in thick-ness and diameter to given dimensions.

(d) Making and repairing quadruplex and duplex instru-m.ents, including relays, keys, registers, galvano-meters, pole changers, tratnsmitters, and otherassociated. apparatus.

(e) Rei)airing and making parts of automatic telegraphmachine systems, including transmitters, receivers,keyboard, hand and electromagnetic perforatorsand other associated apparatus.

(f) Making workshop tests of all telegraph, telephone,or other apparatus used by the Department.

(.) Ability to understand and work to dimensioneddrawings.

II. Theory (maximum marks 200; pass marks 120)(a) Written examination (maximum marks 100).(b) Oral examination (maximum marks 100) .

Questions in (a) and (b) will be based uponitems covered l) T the above syllabus of practicaltests, and upon the principles underlying theordinary work of a Senior Mechanic.

EXEMPTION FROM A PART OR PARTS OF THE EXAMINATIO'N.A candidate who was examined at .Exa.utiiiation No. 2121 forpromotion as Senior Mechanic, Engineering Workshops, heldin 1938, and obtained a pass in any of the three parts ofthat examination, namely, practical tests, written theory, andoral theory, may claim exemption from re- examination in thepart or parts in which he passed. In the practical tests atleast 180 marks out of a maximum of 300, in written theory60 marks out of a maximum of 100, and in oral theory 60marks out of a maximum of 100 represented a pass in therespective part.

RATES OF PAY. Subject to the regulations, the annualsalary .payable is minimum £288 (actual £280) , maximum£324 (actual £316), the maximum being attainable subject togood. conduct, diligence, and efficiency by annual incrementsof £12.

A successful candidate who is temporarily employed as aMechanic at the date of permanent appointment, and whois in receipt of salary above the minimum prescribed for per-manent officers, will be appointed without reduction of salary.and if not in receipt of the maximum will be eligible forincremental advancement twelve months from the date ofreceipt of the rate of pay drawn a.s a temporary employee atthe time of his permanent appointment.

Appointees will be eligible for child endowment at the rateof £13 Per annum in respect of each dependent child underthe .age of fourteen years.

Where any amount of salary specified above is varied bythe operation of Public Service Regulation TOGA on accountof variations in cost of living, the rate of salary as so variedis to be regarded as the specified salary.

EXAMINATION EXEMPTIONS .---A permanent officer of the Com-monwealth Service will be exempted from examination in theeducational section.

As no officer of the Commonwealth Public Service passedin the practical tests or in a section of theory at a correspond -ing examination held within the last three years, the usualprovision for sectional exemptions has been omitted fromthis notification.

PASS CONDITIONS. To pass the examination a candidatemust obtain at least the number of pass marks specified inthe paragraph "Subjects of Examination ". Persons who arenot permanent officers of the Commonwealth Service mustqualify also in the educational section.

APPLICATIONS are invited from permanent officers ofthe Commonwealth. Public Service for temporary transfer

to London for two years; one officer to be selected.Applicants must hold a degree of a recognized University

and have shown themselves capable, either in their under-graduate course or their subsequent activities, of profitablypursuing post - graduate studies in subjects approved by thePublic Service Board.

'ìe officer selected will be required to proceed to Londonat"-an early date. He will be attached to the High Commis-sioner's Office, London; and will perform such duties as maybe determined. He will be required to pursue, outside officehours as far as practicable, a two years' course of study inapproved subjects at the London School of Economics andPolitical Science, and should where possible sit for a higherdegree.

While abroad. the .officer will continue to receive his usual .salary as an officer of the Commonwealth Public Service,

subject to the condition that the minimum amount payablewhile in London will be £ sterling 350 per annum. No specialallowance will be paid in addition.

The following payments will be made by the Common-wealth :

Steamer fare .(officer only) to and from England ;Salary while on board ship ;Lecture and examination fees and allowance for books.

Upon completion of the two -year course in London- the officerwill return to Australia and be placed in a suitable positionin the Commonwealth Service at such classification as may bedetermined. He will be required before proceeding abroad toenter into a bond to remain- in the Commonwealth Service 'forat least five years after his return to Australia.
