Enterotoxemia

Signs-Enterotoxemia is commonlyknown as overeating disease. It ismost common in young kids; however, goats of any age may developthe disorder. Kids less than 2 weeksold or weaned kids on high energy diets are espeCially prone toenterotoxemia.

The first sign of enterotoxemia isusually the sudden death of a verywell-conditioned kid. The symptoms in adult goats are diarrhea andnervous movements. Death canoccur within several weeks.

Prevention-A vaccination is effective against this disease. Goats

. should be vaccinated against enterotoxemia at birth.

Treatment-Consult your veterinarian for the best way to treat thisdisease.

Control

The most efficient way to controlany external parasite in largeAngora herds is by dipping eachanimal. Of course you may not havea large enough herd to justify building and using a dip tank. In thatcase, the next best way to controlexternal parasites is to spray yourgoats with a fairly high pressure

! insecticide spray. Other (less effective) measures include powder,

, pour-on and injectible insecticides.

No systemic insecticide used tocontrol internal parasites will control biting lice

Insecticides are strong chemicals Itis important for you to work withyour veterinarian and to follow themanufacturer's directions on thelabel of any insecticide you use. Most insecticides are available insprays, wettable powders or dustpreparations. Some are applieddirectly while others are mixed withwater before application. Be certain

In the Show RingThe following are generally accepted procedures in exhibitingyour goats

Your Personal Appearance

You should be neat. clean andappropriately dressed for the occasion Dark pants and a white shirtwould be suitable for showingyour Angora goats. Expensive orelaborate clothing is not preferredover neat, clean, more conservativeapparel. Don't forget to securelyfasten your exhibitor number to theback of your shirt.

Carefully separate any matted locksof hair, but don't get too carriedaway. You shouldn't do anythingto disturb the general character ofthe fleece

Clipping

Trim off any urine stained hair onthe rear of your Angora does about2 months after the regular shearing. If the stained hair is left to grow thesame length as the other hair, thestain will spread and more hair willbe discolored. IThis problem will beworse during the summer if yourgoats are on fresh pasture.) Makesure the fleece is free of chaff andstraw.

Show Ring Procedures

Enter the ring promptly when yourclass is called with the goat undercontrol at all times. Showing yourgoat to its best advantage is thefirst requirement of you as a goodexhibitor. You must know where thegoat and the jUdge are at all times.

ThejUdge will probably want to geta look at your goat from the front, rear and both sides. -;-0 do this, heor she will probably ask you to pUllyour goat into a line and set it up.

When lining up, walk your goatinto line. Keep your goat even withthe first goat in the line. Don't gooff by yourself or start a new lineunless the jUdge asks you to. Keepyour goat in line and as quiet aspossible. Stand or kneel to the leftof your goat with its head in frontof you. Don't neglect your goat.but remember to keep one eye onthe jUdge. Make sure your goat isset up properly at all times and isshowing to its best advantage.

You may choose to show your goatwhile kneeling or standing. Baseyour decision on your own strengthand the size and disposition ofyour goat.

Whatever you decide, stay alert! Ifyour goat makes a sudden movewhile you're off balance or not paying attention, it could escape.

Set up your goat by placing its feetso that they are directly under the"four corners" of its body. Standingyour goat in this position gives thejUdge a clear view of the width ofthe goat's chest and hindquarters.

To set the front feet. lift one foot ata time by grasping the forearmclose to the goat's pastern and lifting upward [see fig. 14). (It's best tomove the feet by reaching underthe goat.) Then let the goat settleits weight onto the hoof.

Set the goat's hind legs from its leftside. Reach under the goat withyour right hand. Grasp one leg between the hock and pastern andlift. Next guide the hoof into place

Figure 14. Setting the feet.

and let the goat settle its weightonto that hoof. Then place thegoat's other rear leg.

Some goats are so big that youcan't reach their hind legs whenyou're holding their heads. Otherssimply don't like you to touch theirlegs. If either of these situationsapplies to your goat. place its legsby gently pushing on its hindquarters. This will force it to shift itsweight and its feet.

Once you have your goat's feet set.don't let it relax too much. Relaxedgoats tend to slouch and chew theircuds, which means they won't looktheir best. If your goat is nervousand jumpy, scratch it lightly underthe chin and talk to it softly. Just besure that you don't disrupt theother exhibitors in the class withyour attempts to keep your goateither calm or awake.

I

As the jUdge walks down the frontof the line, make sure your goat'sfront feet are set correctly and itshead is up. Give the jUdge a clearview of your animal for as long ashe or she wishes. Even after moving on to the next exhibitor in line, the jUdge may come back or lookback at you and your goat. so payattention.

As soon as the judge starts towardthe rear of the line, check the position of your goat's rear feet again.

Eventually the jUdge will ask you toturn your goat head-to-tail with theother goats for a side view, Do thisas qUickly and as quietly as possible. Be sure to leave a safe distancebetween you and the other goatsin line Isee fig. 15) on page 28.

It's important to keep your goat stillwhile the jUdge is examining it.Some goats try to push forwardwhile they're standing in line or

while the jUdge is examining themTo keep such a goat in place, standdirectly in front of it and maintaingentle but firm pressure on itschest with your knee. This will keepthe goat still and should preventit from jumping forward whenthe jUdge examines its fleece andconformation.

If your goat moves while it's beinghandled land most do), repositionits feet when the jUdge stands backfor a final look. Don't try to movethe feet or reposition your goatwhile the jUdge is still handling it.Your job during the inspection is tokeep the goat as quiet as possibleand under control. This allows thejUdge to do his or herjob quicklyand easily

Afterthe jUdge inspects each goatin the class, he or she will rearrangethe line. As soon as the jUdgepoints to you, move your goat intothe new line and set it up again. If

28

the jUdge changes his or her mindabout your placing, walk your goatout of the front of the line and upor down the row to your newposition. Remember to keep yourgoat between you and the jUdge, and try not to block thejudge'sview of any other animal he or sheis considering.

And remember to keep showinguntil the jUdge has finished givingreasons and dismissed the classlMany ribbons have been lost byexhibitors who relaxed and quitshowing after they were placed inthe final line.

Good Sportsmanship

Keep the following points in mindwhile showing and prove to oneand all that you're a good sportl• Give other exhibitors all the courtesies and advantages you wouldlike others to give you.• Don't block the jUdge's view ofthe goat next to yours.

• If you must stand in the jUdge'sway during a class, block your owngoat from view before you blockthe jUdge's view of someone else'sgoat. Most jUdges will help you outof awkward situations and willappreciate your consideration.• Try not to bump or let your goatbump the goats or exhibitors standing on either side of you. Don't letyour goat bite the animal in front ofit or kick the one behind it.• If you don't happen to win theclass, always remember to congratulate the winner. A loser whocan smile after a loss may be abigger, stronger person than theperson who can smile only afterwinning. If you're the winner, accept the congratulations of theother competitors graciously• Be friendly and courteous to thejudge and try to do as he or sheasks. After the goats have beenplaced, give the jUdge a quiet"thank you." It's all right to disagreewith the jUdge, since no two people see things exactly alike, butkeep your disagreement to yourself.• Show your respect for the jUdge.Remember that thejudge's decisionis not a personal statement of yourworth as an exhibitor. He or shehas been hired to give his or heropinion of all the goats in theshow. Most jUdges try very hard tomake impartial decisions.• Remember, it's yourjob to believethat your goat is the very best animal in the show ring and to presentit to the jUdge and spectators thatway But the value of your 4-H project animal is not where it places inthe show ring. The real value ofyour 4-H project animal lies in whatyou learn from caring for and learning about it.

Angora goat producers, like otherbusiness operators, are working toproduce and sell a top quality product. The goal of the Angora industry is to raise goats that producelarge quantities of high qualitymohair. In order to properly marketyour mohair and goats and decideon a fair price for them, you mustbe able to determine their quality.

Selling Your GoatsThe main market for raw mohair inthe United States is in Texas. Mostraw mohair is shipped from thereto England, France and Germanyfor processing into yarn and theninto finished garments or otherproducts.

The price mohair brings fluctuatesaccording to the world market.Since you probably only have a fewgoats, you probably won't havelarge quantities of mohair to sell. The best markets for small producers like most 4-H'ers are privatespinners and weavers in thelocal area.

Your county fair or show may havea mohair sale. If you sell yourmohair by this method, check withyour 4-H leader about the marketprice Angora producers are receiving for mohair of similar weight andquality. If you receive more thanthis amount, it is due to the generosity of the person who boughtyour mohair. You should consider ita reward for your efforts and notthe true value of the mohair

Many 4-H clubs find it advantageous to promote their county fairsale. You can promote your sale byvisiting or sending letters to localbusinesses asking them to bid onyour mohair or goats. You canpromote your auction by holding abuyer appreciation banquet afterthe sale as a special way of thanking your buyers. You, your fellowclub members and club leaderprobably can think of more ways toincrease community support foryour livestock auction.

Send a thank-you letter to the buyerof your 4-H goats or mohair assoon as you get home from theshow. This lets the buyer know hisor her efforts are appreciated andencourages him or her to supportfuture sales. It is also a good idea tothank your show and sale officialsfor their efforts in organizing agood show and sale for you. Alsoremember to thank your 4-H leader, parents and county 4-H staff for alltheir help during the year.
