L.I. RBERN Crosswalk Documents

NYSED document organized by grade level

L.I. RBERN document organized by standard across grades

Major Differences

Next Gen standards are broader overall and are meant to be

met by ALL students

“The expectations for learning outlined in the standards are intentionally broad. While the standards set grade-specific expectations for literacy learning, they do not define the methods or materials necessary to support students who are well-above or well-below grade level expectations. It is also beyond the scope of the standards to define the full range of supports appropriate for ELLs/MLLs…..”

From: Introduction to the New York State Next Generation English language Arts Learning Standards (revised 2017)

Next Gen Standards are NOT a curriculum – they are

standards.

◦ Specific texts are no longer mandated at grade levels; expectation is that students will read widely.

◦ Verbiage has been streamlined: sometimes maintaining the CCSS essential meaning and other times refocusing the standard

Highlighted Differences: Reading

Reading for Literature (RL) and Reading for Information (RI) have been combined.

At Kindergarten Level: All instances of “with prompting and support” have been removed.

Minor Changes:

◦ Anchor Standard R6 emphasizes ‘global and diverse texts.’

◦ Anchor Standard R7 streamlines language.

Anchor Standard R9 is completely different

◦ CCLS were very specific; NGLS are broadly generalized.

◦ Little change within grade bands K-2, 3-4, 5-7, 8-12.

Reading Foundational Skills (RF): Grades 1 through 4 use broader language that encompasses CCLS Standards.

RF4 shifts from CCLS reading “with purpose and understanding” to reading with “accuracy and fluency to support comprehension” in NGLS

accomplished by the end of the grade band.

PreK-2 Grades 3-5 Grades 6-8 Grades 9-12.
