Program Statement: This dormitory is a new student residence which strengthens the university’s residential college program. The building includes two- hundred-fifty-six beds, extensive common areas, a classroom and apartments for a faculty-in-residence and a community director. At every scale, the architecture establishes spatial relationships that connect the individual student to the University. The courtyard, ringed by common areas, is a dynamic, collective space. It is surrounded by the house living room, a multipurpose event space with a demonstration kitchen and a flexible classroom on the first floor, which is elevated above grade for flood protection. The upper floors are organized into eight clusters of thirty-two beds, each including dedicated social and study spaces around the courtyard. Bedrooms face outward for privacy, light and views. The building’s massing, materials and fenestration amplify the site relationships and program organization. Outward-facing brick facades register each bedroom’s scale and reference the historic buildings. The courtyard, clad in corrugated zinc, has an active composition expressing the common programs. A multilevel bridge marks entry into the courtyard. The project is LEED Gold certified.
