Common Nouns

A word that names ANY person, place, or thing.

Rule: We do not capitalize common nouns - unless they are at the beginning of the sentence.

Examples of common nouns

• house

• cat

• river

Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are words that name a PARTICULAR person, place, thing, event, or idea.

Rule: We always capitalize proper nouns.
