"FANTASTIC" - this is the word GCSC, MIYC, NSYC guests used to describe SAMI'S 49th annual Change of Watch Cere-mony conducted Sunday, January 13th at the MIYC.

ADVICE FROM THE VICE Peter Coggins, Vice Commodore

Oh, HOW NICE IT IS TO BE BACK IN MARCO! When we left Rumson, NJ last week it was 10.̊ ‘Cool’ as it may be here, this is a wonderful relief. Now let’s get down to current business.

Our February SAMI ‘Membership Meeting’ will be held at the Capri Community Center on Thursday, 14 Feb at 6:00-9:00 (Valentines Day). Keep in mind that this is a ‘Theme Dinner’ Meeting and this month’s dinner theme is French Cuisine … Menu: Assorted Quiche, French Bread, Assorted Salads, Chocolate Desserts. PLEASE RSVP immediately to Micki Gobeil at [email protected] or call 642-4241 to confirm your attendance and to sign up for the dish you will bring. So, let's get started NOW and Kick Off the New Year with our new SAMI Bridge, by becoming ACTIVE-LY involved in our SAMI activities.

I am very excited to be your guest speaker and will be presenting my Cruising Guide of the NJ Coast slide show which explores the six-selected, safe and all-weather NJ coastal inlets from Cape May to Atlantic Highlands …to cure any intimidation caused by the ‘evil reputation’ of some of the inlets… by highlighting the docking and anchoring-out options available… and THEN revealing WHERE TO FIND GOOD FOOD!

Looking ahead to our March SAMI Membership Meeting we are extremely fortunate to have Steve Colgate, the founder of the internationally famous ‘Colgate Offshore Sail-ing School’, as our guest speaker. (See: https://www.offshoresailing.com/about-us/steve-doris-colgate/steve-colgate/). Steve (at Yale) and I (at Northeastern & MIT) were serious collegiate competitors in the New Eng-land Interscholastic Sailing Association (NEISA) back in the mid/late 50’s and it will be most interesting to reminisce. So until then, “Keep your keel out of the mud”…

Communication and Sightless Sailing In all aspects of our lives, communicating is an essential skill that we use to make friends, build relationships and car-ry out everyday tasks at work and play. Nowhere is that test-ed more than sailing. My sailing knowledge is growing rapid-ly from the experiences that I have had over the last few years crewing on Lady M and Foreign Exchange. As part of the crew, I am following instructions to complete the next tack, jibe, or sail trim adjustment to keep the boat moving in the right direction. Two weeks ago, I had a paradigm-shifting experience. My sons and I attended GCSC’s sightless sailing event at Sugden Park. I had never been in a sailing dinghy before, nor had my boys, and I was a little apprehen-sive about being blindfolded for my first experience. Thank-fully, Jonnie Westerop saw the mild look of terror on my face and partnered us with Jerry Watkins. We boarded one of the dinghies and Jerry put on his blindfold. Jerry grabbed the tiller and I was tasked with communicating to him how to avoid the other boats and get around the buoys. We started slowly and far away from the other boats. It was easy to say things like turn “Starboard 20 degrees”. Howev-er, as we got close to shore or the other boats my communi-cation needed to be fast. This was significantly harder be-cause I needed to formulate what I wanted to say and then convert it to sailing language (port, starboard, head up, fall off, etc.). I realized I was not great in my new role of giving sailing commands and sadly we didn’t finish the first race. Thankfully, Jerry and I were able to switch roles for the next course. As soon as I put on my blindfold, Jerry started coaching me around the course. Instead of calling out com-plicated sailing terms, he used simple ones: “Pull the tiller toward you, now push it away.” This simple and effective communication style allowed us to navigate the course and come in first place! It blew my mind that simply changing the communication style allowed us to move from worst to first place. This experience was eye-opening to me and my commu-nication skills are better because of it. I now keep it simple and don’t try and overcomplicate instructions. The boys and I had a great time and learned a lot from our new sailing buddy, Jerry. I hope that each of us do something that is out of our comfort zone this month. Whether that be blindfolding the captain (safely of course), reaching out to a past sailing friend, or untying the lines and take the out the sailboat. We are a big community of sailors and the more we put in to our passion, the more rewarding it will be. I hope to see you all at the Presidents Day weekend cruise to Panther Key!

introduction of the New Bridge for 2019 and the Flag be-ing raised by the New Commodore, Micki Gobeil, who gave a short acceptance speech and announced that "Dinner will now be served, enjoy.”

I have to admit, the evening got off to a shaky start. Ken forget his Program Script and had to share mine; Don forgot his glasses and had to share mine (purple, ladies cheaters from CVS); and I forgot to acknowledge Web Master Lil Bardon with a gift of appreciation. For this mis-take I sincerely apologize. All of our Bridge Members, Chairpersons and Committee Volunteers are SO Appreciat-ed! However, with increasing age plus the excitement of the ceremony, we did forget.

Yes, it was a "FANTASTIC" Ceremony and now we are planning for a "FANTASTIC" year for SAMI, and our Inter-Clubs, to include interesting Monthly Membership Theme Dinner Meetings, Membership Drives, New and Exciting Cruise Venues, and growing relationships with Inter-Clubs.

On a final note, the Presidents Day weekend cruise to Fort Myers Beach was enjoyed by some SAMI Cruisers. Gobeils, Singers, and Winters were invited to a Gourmet Dinner provided by Stacey and Julian Onorato onboard their beautiful vessel, Luna Blue II. Relaxing, eating, laugh-ing in the harbor lights, and sharing sea tales reminded all of us why we spend so much time, energy and MONEY on our vessels - so we can share moments like this.

Now, let's ALL get onboard and work together to make 2019 not only a DEFINING YEAR historically, but also a SAFE and FUN year to be with SAMI. So, mark your calen-dar for SAMI'S BIG 50th Birthday Celebration on Septem-ber 28th at the MIYC.
