Joy of joys, the bugs have gone on vacation. On my return

from Bermuda the first thing I noticed was that I could stand on the deck at the club in the evening at peak "bug time" and not be forced inside. Please bring a bottle of wine and some hors d'oeu-vres and come and watch the sunset from the deck on any of our beautiful evenings and enjoy the lovely vista without irritation.

During my absence in Bermuda I left my responsibilities at the

club in the capable hands of Marvin Day, who with the help of the many volunteers ran a very successful Regatta. Thank you.

My trip to Bermuda was memorable for many reasons. Not

just for the sail there and back, but also being in the presence of some of the worlds finest yachts; and watching the never seen in recent times, "seven" J class boats racing; and not forgetting being able to watch the Americas Cup boats fly across the water was a sight never to be forgotten.

Summer camp was a resounding success this year with a much

larger than expected attendance. I will also hope that everyone has noticed how well the grass is growing at the club with the irri-gation, the increased rain and the maintenance that been done this year. We are greener than ever!

Please check the club calendar and add the "Change of Watch"

and the "Annual Meeting" to your calendars. Over the next few months I will be doing some sunset evening

"Commodores Cruises" on my boat Spartina. I will be asking Mitch to advertise the dates and times when this will be made available through Signup Genius.

I would also like to make a major plug for the bar. Having the

volunteer donation bar is a huge social advantage for the club and we need to make sure that we nurture this facility. Recently, it has been increasingly difficult to obtain volunteers for the bar. The BYSC Summer Camp had a fantastic summer. Over the six-week program we had 301 campers

attend. Each camper got to participate in kayak and paddle boarding, fishing, tubing, sailing, river swims,

field games, arts and crafts and trips to the pool. Introduction to sail was a new activity for each camper.

Tauri Duer, our sailing instructor took the campers out in a beautiful sail boat and taught them the basics

of sailing while sailing around the Beaufort River. The campers also visited the sand bar in downtown

and Port Royal Sands. While visiting the Port Royal Sands the campers collect shark teeth and go on dol-

phin tours. Our Shark group had a cool experience when they visited one day. While walking on the

docks a manatee swam up to greet them. You can check out the video on our camp Facebook page,

BYSC Summer Camp. We also visited the waterfront and made a trip to Yo Yos for some ice cream

while playing in the park. Kona Ice came to camp three times and we enjoyed every visit. We had a won-

derful summer filled with lots of laughs and amazing memories. We cannot wait for next year.

BYSC Summer Camp 2017

GLOWING REVIEW! “Five of our grandchildren just completed a week of day

camp (8:30-4:30) at the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club. They had a FUNTASTIC week of swimming, tubing, kayaking, fish-ing, sailing and even a trip to the sandbar. The camp runs for six weeks in the summer. We had a wonderful week sending off five campers, feeding them dinner and serving as their bunk-house. Melissa and her crew took care of the rest!! Highly rec-ommend it to all parents and grandparents for next summer! “

We will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9:30 am to have a good

time exercising in our wonderful, salt water pool. We work out to really fun music ar-ranged by Leigh Harmer, with her technical assistant, Bruce.

Water Aerobics is low impact, easy on the joints, helps tone and strengthen muscles,

and improve balance. You can participate without knowing how to swim. Joining our friendly group of men

and women is a great way to get to know other club members. If you would like to join us, coat yourself in sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses, (rash

guard shirt, pool shoes if you would like), and meet us at the pool with a "fat" pool noo-dle!

Club Racing

Exciting News about Fall and Winter Sailing At the After-Action meeting for the Lowcountry Regatta, we talked about better race manage-

ment at BYSC and the future of Series racing. We came up with a plan for a Fall Series Seminar on Aug. 25th. (See River Rats Seminar arti-

cle in this Bow Watch.) And we came up with a fall-winter schedule that will provide lots of sailing in great condi-

tions. We have adjusted the racing calendar as follows: No two-day Labor Day Regatta as such; however… The first Fall Series races will be on Monday, September 4th, Labor Day. Starting at 1 p.m.

to get to shore in time for the picnic, and… Awarding the George Post Corinthian Trophy (originally presented at the Labor Day Re-

gatta) as an award for the entire Fall Series, to be presented along with the other class awards at the Change of Watch on November 11th, so...

The Fall Series will run from September 4th to October 15th, all on Sundays (warning at 2

p.m.) except for Labor Day (seven race days), and then we will… Schedule a Winter Series from October 22nd through December 10th on Sundays (warning

at 1 p.m.); no races on Thanksgiving weekend, of course (seven race days) … All classes welcome in the Winter Series, including PHRF. River Rats would…

Start the Winter Series races off the dock, using gov’t marks or moored boats Not need to launch a signal boat and full crew

Launch and man two Mark/Safety Boats – sign up on the Genius after August 15th Use the Frostbite system of weather decisions for “go-no-go” on race days. Start the Frostbite Series in January/February as in 2017.

Full racing schedule with all dates on the website and in this Bow Watch. Put it on your fridge!

See you on the water – John Barber, Fleet Captain

BYSC was founded by a few intrepid sailors who braved the tides and currents of the Beaufort River in their sailboats, no matter the weather, to see who could win that weekend’s races and give them something to talk about all week long.

We’re still at it! The 2017 Fall Series is just around the corner, and BYSC’s famous race man-

agement team, the RIVER RATS, is gearing up for the season. We have openings for new volun-

teers, and we are asking each of our racing sailors to work one day on the Race Committee during the series. We would love to have parents of junior sailors volunteer as well. So, if you already are a River Rat, would like to become one, or if you or your child are planning to race in the Fall Series, we have an event for you!

On Friday evening, August 25th (Final Friday) at 5 p.m. in the clubroom, we’ll have a Fall Se-

ries Orientation for all race management volunteers, potential volunteers, racing sailors and par-ents of junior sailors. It will be short and very interesting, and you can move on to Final Friday festivities after it’s over.

At the orientation, you’ll see a slide show about race management and demos of our new com-

puterized scoring system (the Regatta Network) and our Signup Genius for volunteers. Put this orientation on your calendar. Don’t miss your chance to become part of the heritage of

your club – racing sailboats on the river! Top 10 reasons to become a BYSC RIVER RAT:

10. It’s great exercise.

9. You’ll be in the fresh air, on the water.

8. You can add new skills to your resume. 7. You’ll have a great view of the racing.

6. You’ll be part of exciting river rescues. 5. You’ll make new friends.

4. You’ll be an insider. 3. You get a free t-shirt.

2. You’ll have fun while earning your 20 volunteer hours (sailors get your av-erage score for that day’s racing, too).

1. You get to tell the sailors where to go!

Crew for our trip south: "I'm planning on bringing my 44' Pearson Countess down

from Cape Cod Massachusetts to Beaufort at the end of Sep-tember and I'm looking for a 4th crew. Aquarius is ketch rigged, designed by John Alden and built by Pearson in Bristol RI in 1969. She's been well taken care and can easily carry 4 crew. I'm looking for someone that has experience in sailing large sailboats, offshore experience would be a plus. The schedule is weather permitting and right now we intend to stay outside the Gulf Stream and come straight down taking about 2 weeks (again weather permitting) or longer depending on schedules and time available. If you are interested please email me at [email protected].
