    Each commitment should be a new initiative. Being newcan mean an expansion of an existing effort that focuseson a different geographic area, works with new partners, orshifts in focus or scope. Be innovative!

    Students are most successful when theywork in a dened area where they have apre-existing relationship or partner.

    Commitments should have measurable results anda method for tracking progress and impact. Fleshout an evaluation plan that employs detailed andrealistic metrics and methods.

    Some students complete theircommitments individually, but mostrequire support along the way.Identifying and engaging potentialpartners early is recommended.

    CGI U commitment-makers work to addressspecic challenges on campus, in the localcommunity, or in a different part of the world.Take time to research the issue you hope toaddress before developing your action plan.

    Commitments should have dened goals anda timeline for action (usually no longer thanone or two years). While your work may beongoing, your CGI U commitment should havea clear endpoint.

    Commitments should tangibly impact aspecic population. Gather input fromyour target population to learn howthey understand and already tackle theissue you seek to address. Involvingthe community will result in a moresuccessful project. Identifying and realistically evaluating availableresources (skills, time, knowledge, partners, and

    funding) is key. Successful and sustainablecommitments often start small and leveragepreexisting resources and organizations.

    MAKING A COMMITMENT TO ACTIONIn order to apply to CGI U, you must develop a Commitment to Action. A commitment is a

    new, specific, and measurable plan to address a challenge in one of CGI Us five focus areas:education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation,

    and public health. Use this guide to help you prepare a more effective application.
