HISTORY OF TAUBMANS

ECOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS

One of the oldest paint brands in the Australian market, Taubmans has been painting Australian homes for over 110 years. In 2007 PPG Industries acquired the Taubmans brand. Back in the early 1900s, George Taubman built the company on a foundation of technical superiority. Taubmans’ new owners, PPG, also have a long history of applying global technologies to gain a competitive edge.

Since its inception a century ago, Taubmans has grown to become a major player in the Australian architectural coatings market.

It is also responsible for launching well known and innovative consumer paint brands such as Endure with Nanoguard, Living Proof Silk with Teflon®, Easycoat with Microban® and All Weather with Dirt Shedding Technology. In the future, PPG and Taubmans are committed to continual growth by satisfying consumer needs through innovation.

At PPG, we understand that sustainability is a driving design factor for building and design projects nationwide. We recognise that our paints and stains play an important role in sustainable building and we’re committed to making environmentally progressive products.

PPG was one of the first pioneers in the paint industry to develop new performance standards for zero and low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) products. Many of our paints have zero or low-VOC contents, allowing our products to meet a variety of governmental and third-party regulations nationwide.

With Ecological Solutions from PPG™, painting sustainably does not mean sacrificing coating performance. Everyone who uses our products, from architects and commercial building owners, to home builders and home owners, can confidently strive to find an ecological paint solution by choosing PPG.

PPG Architectural Coatings, part of PPG Industries, touches the lives of many in ways seen and unseen. As a colour pioneer we’re enhancing the beauty and comfort of homes on the inside and the outside.

Not only are we right at home working with leading designers and builders, but we’ve been partnering with the automotive industry for years. PPG is also responsible for protective coatings for use in the most demanding of projects, such as bridges, pipelines, marine vessels and even roller coasters.

From automotive to aerospace, building materials to consumer products, marine and industrial coatings, we bring innovation to the surface.

CASE STUDYFor several years now, Brisbane’s West End has been rising like a phoenix from the ashes of its commercial and industrial past. Through a diverse collection of completed and impending residential developments, new residents have flooded into this colourful part of the city, in a process that is less gentrification and more outright transformation.

Under these conditions of change, the West End has been steadily unfolding into the kind of bohemian neighbourhood so desired by those migrating from the outer suburbs into the city centre. This includes young couples and singles, young families and also, of course, empty-nesters.

The Canvas Apartments, created by developer Pradella and designed by ML Design, with interiors by Tonic, fits into this pattern precisely. Located on a difficult triangular site, but one promising fantastic elevated views of the

Brisbane CBD, the Brisbane River and Mount Coot-tha for starters, Canvas Apartments has been shaped to respond to the dynamism of the evolving neighbourhood. The resulting design is a practical elaboration of what it means to live in a subtropical urban environment, where views outwards and privacy concerns are held in balance. The design of the façade is central to this balancing act, and gives the development its distinctive profile.

The Canvas Apartments was so named as it sought to provide a new canvas for residents to make their mark, set against the gritty urban environs of the West End. As a consequence of this, colour was a crucial aspect of the design – both practically, and conceptually. Pradella, a relationship-focused business, chose Taubmans as their partner to achieve the desired outcomes for paint, coatings and finishes, both internal and external. With Taubmans on

board, colour and finish could be determined in relation to two different, and complementary, aspects of the development.

Firstly, there is the introduction of coloured ‘sticks’ in the lower podium parts of the building. Originally this part of the building’s envelope was earmarked for commercial use; the reclassification of the podium as residential use brought with it new challenges, both technical and design-related. The ‘sticks’ allowed for the creation of a shallow screen-like formal device, which assists with privacy and framing views from apartments in the lower podium levels.

The partnership with Taubmans was central to the solution for colour on this part of the building. The coloured ‘sticks’ were to be manufactured out of aluminium, and the

NEW DEVELOPMENT

challenge was to come up with a process that performed better than standard powder coat, while achieving the same colour saturation and visual effect. Through perseverance, the team at Taubmans was able to devise a wet system of bold colour coating for an aluminium substrate, which – crucially – came with a warranty of suitable duration. Taubmans Armawall was also used on the exterior of the building, complementing the more strongly coloured elements.

The second aspect of the project where colour was essential was, of course, the interiors. Devised by Tonic, the interiors come in three evocatively named ‘flavours’. These are ‘Ink’ (touches of chocolate and charcoal), ‘Watercolour’ (touches of green) and ‘Chalk’ (neutral-toned and harmonious). As Matt Riley of Tonic says, “To live at Canvas is to inhabit a melting pot of

culture and colour. By creatively blending materials, textures and space, we’ve produced a canvas for residents to reflect elements of their own personality.”

Taubmans worked with Tonic to match the interior design concept schemes to specified colours and finishes, and they provided all of the interior coatings and paint, notably Taubmans Pure Performance™. This finish met the developer’s exacting standards, and also those of the designers.

As Erik Lundberg of ML Design says, “Taubmans were always very proactive and responsive in getting a system that met the performance and warranty requirements we had.” Throughout the project, Taubmans representatives went out of their way to service

the project, conducting regular site inspections. These were for quality assurance purposes and to ensure that the finished product met the supplier’s own high standards for installation. To a large extent, the results speak for themselves, and the commitment to service delivery (a hallmark of Taubmans) is no doubt the most compelling reason for Pradella to continue to work with the company, on new projects.

So what of the building in the setting? The resulting building represents just one more chapter in the story of the West End, a story that continues to be told, part-by-part. But rather than being a conservative or dull chapter, Canvas Apartments is an injection of colour into this once industrial neighbourhood.

CASE STUDYThe Pullman Reef Hotel Casino is a prominent building, and a flagship in Cairns’ hospitality industry. The complex is comprised of two parts; a historic component known as the Commoners House, and a comprehensive, sprawling new resort. The new component includes the Hotel, the Casino, extensive landscaped areas and pools, and even a glass dome over a wildlife park. As part of a regular planned maintenance cycle, the whole Hotel and Casino complex were recently given a full external repaint. The repaint included façades, ground floor exteriors and balcony elements (both concrete and steel).

The requirements for repainting the facility differed according to the part of the complex being treated. The whole complex needed to keep operating during the repaint, providing the main constraint.

Of all the elements of the complex, the Casino was relatively easy to schedule for repainting, as it is comprised

largely of vertical façades. Compared to the Casino, the Hotel presented different challenges. The scheduling of individual room balcony works was a logistical puzzle, and had to be carefully organised, along with the temporary installation of appropriate warning signage. All of this needed to be carried out from the exterior, without access from the rooms.

The painting process, which was executed by Higgins Coatings, was handled by a team of around ten painters, co-ordinated by a site foreman. They used a mix of industrial rope access (abseiling), and elevated work platforms to access the building. Higgins nominated Taubmans to be the painting and coating supplier for the project, extending their long-standing relationship. Taubmans was appointed because it provided high-performance products that met the project’s requirements, combined with excellent service.

It was important to have a product and application method that met the project’s specific criteria. Taubmans ‘Endure’ finished in semi-gloss achieved this by facilitating easy ‘wash down’ of the building (which occurs every two years to prevent salt and environmental pollution accretion), and through its excellent and long-enduring finish, as its name suggests. The ‘Nanoguard’ technology built into the Endure product, controls dirt and mould and was a key element in the selection of the paint. The surfaces painted included off-form concrete, both flat and profiled.

In the heritage-listed Commoners House, which contains a large amount of delicate wrought iron, White Knight Rust Guard (from the makers of Taubmans) was used to protect the iron components. It was also used on balcony handrails throughout. The Commoners House required a bespoke colour scheme, and Taubmans created a unique palette of custom colours that met the building’s heritage specification.

The service offering from Taubmans is exceptional, and this was evident in the project. In the words of Chris Constable of Higgins, “Taubmans was totally on the ball with the project, and services included the management of a range of criteria through regular site attendance to ensure that standards were being met.”

Taubmans’ inspections and advice included quality control, colour fidelity and consistency, and the correctness of application procedures and methods by the contractor.

The Taubmans team went out of their way to make the job as easy as possible for the painter, project manager and ultimately for the engineering team and building management of the Hotel Casino. Taubmans’ staff were highly responsive, highly knowledgeable and firmly embedded in the project. They were able to turn orders around reliably and quickly, meaning that a bulk order

made in the afternoon of one day was on site ready for use first thing the following morning.

The challenges for building engineers and managers of properties like Hotels and Casinos are significant. The different architectural forms of the Pullman Reef’s façades, each with different access and surface preparation requirements, complicate maintenance and painting projects. Despite this, the full repainting of the complex has been carried out successfully, negotiating the project’s logistical challenges to ensure the facility will look good and be durable for years to come. This could not have been achieved without the specification of the best product, combined with excellent support service to ensure the best outcome. Taubmans met and exceeded the challenges presented by the project, making life easier for all participants.

With one in three Australians suffering from allergies, the quality of the indoor air we breathe is an important consideration for interior designers, architects and building specifiers. Whether it be a residential space or something much larger in scale such as a hospital or educational facility, surfaces and finishes can play an important role in minimizing the allergens that can pollute the air we breathe.

When it comes to paint selection, it’s important to understand the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) levels for each product. VOCs are included in paint formulations as they play a role in how paint performs, particularly with brushability and drying time. However they can also be damaging to the quality of the indoor air and affect many people in an adverse way.

In order to achieve the best indoor air quality, one thing to look for in a paint is a product that is low in VOC and

odour. Another consideration to take into account for air quality is whether your interior paint does anything to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, mould, mildew and fungus.

Taubmans Pure Performance™ is one such paint that goes the extra mile in terms of achieving a cleaner, fresher and safer interior environment. It is a 100% acrylic high performance water based paint that has been formulated for interior surfaces. The unique formula is low in VOC and odour and has also been exclusively engineered with Microban® antibacterial protection. Taubmans has also been approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program, the only Australian paint brand to achieve such status.

The Microban® technology is built-in during the manufacturing process of the paint, and provides

continuous antibacterial protection against the growth of mould and mildew. The formulation also inhibits the growth of potentially harmful bacteria for the life of the paint.

In situations where a hygienic environment is fundamental, such as health care facilities and hospitals, occasionally surfaces that are not in direct contact with patients can be neglected, even though they may be potential sources of cross contamination. The Microban® technology in Taubmans Pure Performance™ paint works continuously to provide an added level of protection in the fight against microbes and bacteria.

Aside from the technological aspects of the paint that make it ideal for green star projects, Taubmans Pure Performance™ rates especially well in terms of the key attributes that impact paint quality; opacity, application, serviceability and gloss levels. Each of these attributes has

CASE STUDYTAUBMANS

an impact on the other and it can be challenging to achieve a balanced paint formulation that delivers outstanding results across all of these properties. Pure Performance has been specifically formulated with a great balance across each these attributes, showcasing the true quality of the paint and Taubmans commitment to producing innovative products.

With excellent opacity, stain blocking and superior application properties, Pure Performance™ provides a professional finish every time. It also sits well above the industry average when it comes to serviceability; the scrub resistance and washability levels ensure that the paint retains its professional finish long after cleaning. This well balanced formulation means it is perfectly suited to a range of interior environments including housing, healthcare, education and hospitality.

As part of the Western Australian government’s health reform program, the design of the Fiona Stanley Hospital was strongly influenced by research into the impact of the physical environment on health and wellbeing. Determined to keep VOCs in interior fixtures and finishes to a minimum, Taubmans Pure Performance™ was specified throughout the interior. In addition to the low VOC paint formulation, the Microban® technology helped in protecting surfaces from germs and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, while also working to inhibit the growth of mould, mildew and fungus.

The specially engineered paint formulation of Taubmans Pure Performance™ opens it up to range of interior applications, and while the health benefits are apparent in its use in health care and hospitals, it is also perfectly suitable for luxury commercial projects such as the VSQ

North development in Sydney. Pure Performance™ was used throughout the interior of the four buildings and was described as easy to work with, providing results in an excellent finish that perfectly balances the required level of shine and serviceability. The project team were thoroughly impressed that the paint achieved all of their requirements while still representing great value, making it ideal for high-end commercial painting jobs.

While the aesthetic properties of a paint are always important in any interior project, when you need a more technologically advanced product, Taubmans have engineered formulations perfect for any application. With the combination of low VOC, Microban® technology and an all-round top performing paint, Pure Performance™ is ideal for your next project and is of course tintable to all 5762 Taubmans colours.

The impact of colour on the way we act and feel cannot be underestimated and we understand the huge influence it holds over residential environments, especially where the emotional wellbeing of residents is concerned and how it can make a house a home.

Whether you require bespoke colour schemes, brushouts or general colour advice, Taubmans can provide the ideas and answers you need.

Choosing colours for any building is a process which requires both knowledge and inspiration. The range of colours and services available from Taubmans are designed to inspire and support in the creation of the perfect colour scheme.

As colour can dramatically affect the look and feel of a room, we know it’s important to make the right choice. Certain colours can evoke certain moods and feelings, and by careful selection, designers can use colour to subtly influence moods. For example, the warm side of the spectrum provides happy lively colours – reds, oranges and yellows – whilst the cool side gives us calming, restful colours – greens, blues and purples.
