The e-portfolio

An e-portfolio is a digitized collection of artefacts including demonstrations, resources, and accomplishments that represent an individual, group, community, organisation, or institution. This collection can comprise text-based, graphic, or multi-media elements.

An e-portfolio is more than a simple collection however; it can also serve as an administrative tool to manage and organise work created with different applications and control who can see or discuss the work. The benefits of an e-portfolio typically derive from the exchange of ideas and feedback between the author and those who view and interact with e-portfolio. In addition the author’s personal reflection on the work inside an e-portfolio helps create a meaningful learning experience (Lorenzo and Ittleson, 2005, p. 1).

Reflective Practice

Reflective practice is perhaps best understood as an approach which promotes autonomous learning that aims to develop students' understanding and critical thinking skills. What is reflective practice. (2009) para. 2

The Briefs

Brief 1: Exploring the potential of e-portfolios and reflective practice (weeks 1-4).

1. Use the internet to find out about different types of e-portfolios and related issues. This is so you can understand the possibilities that e-portfolios offer to users, and make informed choices in how you develop your own portfolio. Some possible questions to keep in mind during online research are:

- What are e-portfolios and how do they differ from traditional portfolios?- What software, platforms or management systems are commonly used?- What are some freedom, control, learning, and privacy issues connected to e-

portfolio use?

2. Use the internet to find out about reflective practice in learning contexts.

- What is the reflective practice cycle? - How can reflective practice enhance learning?- What types of reflective practice are appropriate for the purposes of this paper?

What are the stages of these types of reflective practice?- What are the characteristics of reflective writing which distinguish it from other

writing genres?

Please note that ALL information and ideas that you have sourced from the internet, whether copied directly or paraphrased in your own words, MUST BE REFERENCED both in-text and in a reference list. Also, anything copied directly must be clearly indicated by quote marks or by indents (if part of a larger text).YOU WILL RECEIVE A FAIL GRADE FOR THIS BRIEF IF THIS CRITERION IS NOT FOLLOWED. In-text citations must be hyperlinked and/or in APA style. However there must be a final APA style reference list included in your view. There are numerous web resources that provide examples of APA referencing.

3. Develop a proposal for your Brief 2 digital asset.

You will develop a proposal for a digital asset using an e-portfolio (possibly in conjunction with other web based platforms), which you will work on and develop during the studio sessions in Weeks 5-12. This could include text (narrative, analysis or discussion), a site (blog, wiki, webpage) or some other kind of multi-media production (podcast, animation, virtuality).

There are four main criteria to consider for the selection of your digital asset.

- Content is web-sourced as much as possible.- It demonstrates a skill related to the knowledge base and capabilities you are

acquiring through your programme of study in your chosen major(s). For

9

Page 11: COMM610 iReflect - princaplesofjournalism.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewAUT University. BA English & New Media Studies. COMM610 iReflect. Paper Handbook . 2017. Please note:

example it could focus on an area of learning you are having difficulty with or want to develop further.

- It feeds back into the world-wide-web, by providing information or resources for other web users.

- It is something you will be able to critically reflect on.

NB you cannot submit the same work that has been or will be submitted for assessment on another paper.

Your proposal will answer the following questions:

- What will your digital asset consist of i.e. what will you post in your e-portfolio? - How is it related to your current or future programme of study?- What is the aim of your asset? What skill(s) do you aim to develop/improve?

How will you demonstrate these?- What is your weekly plan of action (present a detailed plan in table form for each

week - Week 5, Week 6,…. Week 12)- What criteria will you use to identify whether you are making progress towards

your aim? - What theoretical references will you use to guide, benchmark and evaluate your

own work? List at least two reference sources.

4. Create a Wordpress blog showcasing 1-3 above.

5. Look at the portfolios being developed by other students and provide constructive feedback through Comments.

Please note: Brief 1 will be assessed on the basis of its published form atthe end of week 4. Work added to the brief after this date will not be assessed.

Brief 2: Developing your digital asset

1. Develop the digital asset proposed in Brief 1 using WordPress and other web-based interfaces.

This will mostly happen during the three hour studio sessions in weeks 5-12. The best way to approach this is by systematically building a component of your asset each week to reach a target predetermined in your weekly plan. For example, if you are subtitling videos, you may set a target of subbing 4 videos overall, thus every week you will complete the subbing of half of one video.

2. Reflect on the progress of your digital asset, what you have learned, what was helpful for your learning, what challenges you faced, changes or improvements you will implement and any critical moments or realisations you encountered. You may also reflect on the technological interfaces you engage with, and the reflective process itself.

Use the information gathered in Brief 1 to guide your reflective process. The written reflections should be entered in four dated postings in weeks 7, 9, 11, 13, with the week 13 entry comprising an overall reflection on the whole project. Minimum total word count 1400 words.

3. Interact.

Identify an affinity group with whom you interact regularly both online and offline. Invite comments on your portfolio and the way it is developing. The information gathered can be incorporated into your asset and reflections. Regularly add constructive feedback on the portfolios within your group. Copy each dated item of feedback into the Affinity Group page on your Wordpress site.

Please note: Your Brief 2 e-portfolio must be completed and published by Sunday 30 Oct. Any posts added after this date will not be included in the assessed work.

ALL information and ideas that you have sourced from the internet, whether copied directly or paraphrased in your own words, MUST BE REFERENCED both in-text and in a reference list. Also, anything copied directly must be clearly indicated by quote marks or by indents (if part of a larger text).YOU WILL RECEIVE A FAIL GRADE FOR THIS BRIEF IF THIS CRITERION IS NOT FOLLOWED. It is not always necessary to follow APA in-text style – other forms of referencing such as hyper-linking might be used. However there must be a final APA style reference list included in your view. There are numerous web resources that provide examples of APA referencing.

OTHER THINGS

Dishonesty in Assessments:The following are important with regard to dishonesty in assessments. The AUT General Academic Regulations are quoted below:

General Academic RegulationsThe University academic regulations shall be breached if a student during an examination or assessment:

i. copies from, or inappropriately communicates with another person;ii. is found in possession of books or any other unauthorised equipment or material;iii. plagiarises the work of another without indicating that the ideas are not the

student’s own;iv. collaborates with others in the preparation of material, except where this has

been approved as an assessment requirement;v. re-submits previously submitted work without prior approval of the examination

board; orvi. uses any other unfair means

Please note that any incident that is found to be in breach of this regulation will be taken very seriously and will result in loss of marks or suspension from the programme. For more information, see 2004 AUT Calendar and also visit the AUT web-site www.aut.ac.nz

Extensions and Late Penalties for AssessmentsTests: The final assessment must be sat on the scheduled day. In the case of sickness, bereavement or exceptional circumstances, aegrotat considerations are possible subject to AUT Rules and Regulations. For more information, visit the AUT web-site www.aut.ac.nz

Extensions: A time extension for submitting briefs may be granted in cases of sickness, bereavement or exceptional circumstances. Reasons that amount to inefficient time management or work commitments are not grounds for an extension being granted. Extensions are obtainable only in advance of the assignment’s due date. Applications should be made to the lecturer concerned. (See Request for Extension forms, and the BA ENMS Handbook) Where no extension has been arranged or granted, late assignments will be given a penalty of one part grade per day late. For example, a B+ assignment, handed in two days late, will be awarded a B- grade.
