FROM THE PRINCIPAL IMPORTANT REMINDERS As we move into the construction phase of our new school and as student numbers increase and playground space decreases it is important to note now more than ever that we follow processes and guidelines that we have in place to ensure the well-being of our students. Some of these guidelines I will outline below have not been fully enforced but now is the time we need to do so. If you enter the school other than to drop off your child at the beginning of the school day or to collect your child at the end of the school day you must report to the office to get a visitors tag. We have had some issues of late of people entering school grounds and not wearing a tag. Even if you are bringing up a lunch for your child you must report to the office first. Only enter the school via the pedestrian gates outside the office or near the kiss and drop zone or the new gate opposite the kindergarten rooms. This includes when delivering or collecting children to and from EBASCA. Parents are not to access the car park gates at any time. There are ‘no pedestrian access signs’ on the gate and on the two barricades we have stopping people from walking in behind the EBASCA Rooms. Yet despite these signs and obstacles people still use it. I am not a cranky Principal, I just get tired of the majority of people following the rules while a few others due to impatience or selfishness believe they are above the rest of us and the rules do not apply to them. If your child has not arrived at school by the time the class has reached their room or activity site, then the child must report to the office to collect a late note which a parent will be required to sign. I recently went to the Kiss and Drop Zone to observe and was surprised at the number of people who arrived at school after 9:20am. Students should be inside the school gates ready to line up when the 9:20am bell goes. When a child is absent from school the parent or caregiver must give the school a reason for the absence. This can be done via written or electronic communication. When using email please ensure the email address from the sender identifies the sender as parent or caregiver. Please be aware that repeated unjustified absences will

result in a referral to the Home School Liaison Officer. ROAD SAFETY FOLLOW UP Following on from last week’s letter about road safety I have contacted the local police to have more patrols around our school at home time and will be meeting with a representative from Parramatta Council to explore strategies to increase road safety around our school. Unfortunately, the temporary closure of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link on 30 September will increase greatly the number of buses using Pemberton Rd. This just reinforces the necessity for us to be careful when driving around the area. TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY Once again our school community will have the opportunity to participate in the Tell Them From Me Survey. This will involve our Years 4, 5 & 6 students as well as staff and parents. The information we collect is valuable in planning our future direction. The survey will be sent home to parents in the next few weeks and our students will complete it before the end of term. More information will be sent home in next week’s newsletter. UNIFORMS Two weeks ago in our newsletter I asked parents to support us in our push to ensure students were wearing school uniform. At the time I did mention that students not wearing uniform (unless they are new to the school) would require a note from parents to the class teacher. Please help students to show pride in their school through their school uniform. By John Ford

K-2 GALA DAY 2018 On Tuesday 4 September all the K-2 students will be participating in our Annual K-2 Gala Day at Epping Oval. Parents are most welcome to attend. The students will need to wear their sport uniform, hat and sport shoes. As the Gala Day lasts all day, students will need to bring their own lunch, drink and crunch and sip in a small bag. If the weather becomes too inclement then a note will be broadcast over the Skoolbag App on

Tuesday morning and the Gala Day will be postponed until Friday 7 September.

LIBRARY NEWS Book Week The theme for this year was “Find Your Treasure”. Students enjoyed discussing “treasures” they have found when searching for new books. A highlight of the week was a visit from Perform Education who presented an engaging performance which incorporated books from Australian authors.

2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge finished on Friday 31 August. There were 204 students who completed the challenge this year which was a terrific effort. Hopefully you have found the challenge an opportunity for your child to read more and to read more widely. Book Fair I have been in contact with Scholastic Books and they hope to have all our Book Fair ordered books to us as soon as possible. The order does not get delivered all at once so apologies for the delay.

Many thanks to parents who donated a Book Fair book to the school library – I will make sure your child is the first to borrow this book. Mrs Penny Bulgin Relieving Teacher Librarian

PARENT INFORMATION SESSION Our next Parent Information Session will be in Week 9. Please consult the table for more details. The session will be held in the CAPA room commencing at 3:30pm. Child minding will be available.

SPORTS EQUIPMENT - COLES VOUCHER ORDER ARRIVAL Recently the sports equipment ordered using the ‘Coles Sports for Schools’ vouchers arrived. We were able to use these vouchers to replenish some of our most used sports equipment including bean bags, markers and basketballs. Thank you to all of our families who contributed their vouchers to the collection. Special thanks to Mrs Laura Wilden for being our contact person with the program and helping make sure it happened.

DEBATING REPORT On Wednesday 29 August 2018, Epping Light Blue and Epping Blue Debating Teams competed against each other which was the last debate for Year 6 this year. The topic was “That primary school students should have swimming lessons at school”. Epping Light Blue were the affirmative (agree) while the Epping Blue Team were the negative (disagree). It was a hard and fun debate because we had to verse our own school friends. In the end, Miss Taylor Angelo came to a decision and gave the debate to the Light Blue team. Debating this year has been a lot of fun and we all hope that lots of students are able to participate in debating next year. Thanks to Ms Kerr and Mrs Zammit for being such fantastic coaches. OUR UNIFORM – BE SAFE Epping Public School is committed to ensuring a safe and happy environment for your child. School uniforms contribute to the personal safety of students by allowing easier recognition of our students inside the school and when they are in the community. When designing our school uniform, the committee ensured that our uniform complied with work health and safety and anti-discrimination legislation. Our school uniform: • requires students to wear appropriate

footwear – black school shoes except when sports or Physical Education are timetabled.

• requires students to wear a hat for outside activities when appropriate. The issue of protecting students from the dangers associated with sun exposure needs to be taken seriously. At our school, we implement a broad range of strategies and provisions to minimise harm associated with exposure to the sun, including encouraging our students to remain in the shade as much as possible during peak times of ultra-violet radiation and using sunscreen. Our uniform also helps to protect our students by having a sun-safe hat for outside activities as part of the school's uniform requirements.

• requires that jewellery or other items that could, with reasonable foreseeability, cause

an injury to themselves or other students are not worn.

Our school uniform promotes the health and safety of our students. By Strategic Direction 3 Committee
