So what do you do when you turn 95? You have a Birthday Party! St. Patrick’s Day LuncheonBy Judy Rose

Saturday March 17th dawned bright and sunny with flowers, trees and shrubs blooming—a perfect Spring day. Some 30 AMS members and guests gathered at HOME at Brad-dock Inn in Braddock Heights, Maryland. Folks gathered to “keep in touch and have fun” while Nancy Biggin and AMS Vice President Greg Cross sold the 50/50 tick-ets. President Amber Beall emceed

the luncheon. She had everyone be seated and Gil Monck gave the

invocation. Then Harrold Capps led everyone in the Pledge of Al-

legiance. Amber then called up Pat Weed to give us some history about HOME, which used to be a ski lodge. I believe he said that the original building was a men’s club-

house back in the days when folks came up to Braddock Heights to en-joy relief from the heat and humid-ity of Washington, D.C. HOME’s wait staff served us salads and set bread on the tables—the pumpkin bread was tasty. The salad plates were removed and replaced with the luncheon entrees. The apple stuffed chicken was delicious; the corned beef and cabbage looked tasty and the vegetarian pasta looked good, too. We were served scrumptious apple cobbler a la mode. As we finished dessert, Amber reminded us all to check out mappers.org. Judy Rose spoke a few words about

the last issue of AMS Life, which is scheduled for the July. Amber had Greg Holman, head chef, Gina, John and Kayla of the HOME staff

bought out to receive a round of applause. Greg gave us the “recipe”

for the apple-stuffed chicken sauce/gravy—a “basic” white sauce with salt and pepper, sage, brown sugar, butter and cream—cooked down.

Note that there are no proportions; we are on our own to figure it out!Greg Cross provided Home Depot gift cards for the door prizes and

drew the first winning ticket. Kay Chance, Robin Phipps, Judy Bowles, and Conley Phipps, won the gift

cards. Fawn Weed, Merle Biggin and Robin Phipps each won $15 in

the 50/50 drawing. Amber remind-

Our Thoughts and Prayers are with Harry and his Family

Medford P. Canby Jr.By Judy MacConnach

It is with much sadness that I write this article. On 2 February 2012, we lost a wonderful co-worker with the passing of Med-ford P. Canby, Jr. Med was a native Washingtonian, born, raised, and residing in DC. Med worked as an Engineer in Post Engineering/Facilities Engineering for many years. I had the pleasure of work-ing with him for over 20 years. He was a jack-of-all trades and he always had a flashlight in his pocket because there was always a valve to be turned or equipment to be repaired. He lived close by and was always available for any emergency. He retired from this position in 1992. Med always had a joke to be told and always had a smile and a story whenever you encountered him in the hallway. He was the best stand-up comedian at the agency. He was well-liked by all who knew him. Med was like an old shoe - he always made you feel comfortable in his pres-ence. The FE family will greatly miss him. Condolences to Peggy, Susie, Annie, Med II, and 3 grand-children.

Vice Admiral Shannon D. Cramer, Jr.

Vice Admiral Shannon D. Cramer, Jr. (Age 90) formerly of Clemson, SC, passed away at his home in Washington, DC, sur-rounded by family on February 15, 2012. Shannon was born on September 18, 1921 in Washing-ton, DC to Shannon D. Cramer, Sr, and Mary Hazen Duffy Cra-mer. He attended Central High School in Washington, DC. where he excelled at football, was named to the National Honor Society and was the President of his graduat-ing class of 1939. He skipped one year in high school and attended Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, New Jersey to prepare for his entrance to the United States Naval Academy. World War II accelerated the wartime classes including the Class of 1944. Shan-non graduated early, after only two years and nine months, on June 9, 1943 and was commissioned an Ensign. Admiral Cramer served aboard the USS Laub (DD613), the USS Furse (DDR882), the USS Cochino (SS345), the USS Half-beak (SS352), the USS Cobbler (SS344) and the USS Sirago. He commanded the USS Swordfish (SSN579), the Gold Crew of the USS Patrick Henry (SSBN599), Submarine Division 102, Subma-rine Squadron 15. Admiral Cra-mer’s other assignments included the Staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron 6; aide to the Executive Officer of the Submarine Base, head of the Reserve Training and

Following retirement, he served as the De-partment of Defense/Joint Chief of Staff representative to the United Nations Law of the Sea Conference from 1978 to 1981. He received the DoD Outstanding Award for Public Service for this assign-ment. Vice Admiral Cramer was a founder and the first President of the Naval Submarine League. His tenure in that role was from 1981 to 1989. Vice Admiral Cramer was recognized for his outstanding contribution as director of DMA and was inducted into the National Imagery and Mapping Agency Hall of Fame in 2003. Admiral

Cramer’s decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with four gold stars; the American De-fense Service Medal; the American Campaign Medal; the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two stars; the Asi-atic Pacific Campaign Medal; the World War II Victory Medal; the Navy Occupation Service Medal; Europe Clasp; the National De-fense Service Medal with bronze star. Admiral Cramer was a mem-ber of Eternal Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clemson, S.C. IMPORTANT EDITOR’s NOTE ABOUT AMs lIFE

To all AMS Life Readers,Harold Snyder and I have now published AMS Life for thirty-two years. The July color issue of AMS Life

will be the last issue published on the web. Hopefully a Black and White edition will continue to be printed. As editor, I have really enjoyed putting together the color and Black and White issues. I really appreciate all the positive comments that I’ve received over the years. Thank you for your support. Many have said that AMS Life was the glue that helped hold the organization together. But it’s time to change and move into the 21st century. As most of you know Ralph Mayer and Barbara Bailey formed a team to catapult the Associa-tion of Mapping Seniors into the 21st century by establishing a web page called “mappers.org”. Ralph has since moved to a new web provider and he has built a fantastic web page that includes everything in AMS Life except it’s on a real-time basis. You get the news when it happens--not every three months when many things are old news. Although it’s really sad for me to see AMS Life end, it’s really exciting for me to see it take on a different form which is more appropriate for our times. The last color issue of AMS Life will be published on the web in July 2012. So if any of you would like to contribute an article with or without photos for the July issue, please submit them to me for publication by June 10, 2012. Again thanks for all your support.
