This year's theme is "Safety and Sustainability in Motion," a
point underscored by the "Advanced
Technology SuperHighway," a 65,000-square-foot exhibit of the
latest solutions in the industry,
including Evs, biofuels and the other prospects for energy
efficiency and security. The show draws key
policy makers, Cabinet secretaries, industry leaders and
international media. It is also the largest public
show in Washington and draws one of the nation's most educated
and affluent consumer audiences.
Advanced Biofuels USA plans to cover Policy days, as long as
devastating snow storms don't foil our
plans as they did last year.
The Washington Auto Show Policy Summit on Capitol Hill, produced
in partnership with National Journal
and The Green Car Journal, will address the role of the
automotive industry in the new economy and
policy implications for a sustainable industry. SAE will also
continue to co-locate its Annual
Government/Industry Meeting at this show.

Highlights
American Association of Community Colleges launches a new
Transportation and Fuels resource section on its
Sustainability
Education and Economic Development (SEED Center) web site,
featuring Advanced Biofuels USA. Over
the past few months, Advanced Biofuels USA volunteers,
particularly board member Doug Root, provided
resource information to AACC as they worked on adding biofuels
and sustainable renewable
transportation fuels information to its SEED website.
We are happy to see the launch of this section, along with
another new, related section on Sustainable
Agriculture, Food and Land. This resource, directed at community
colleges and career prep schools
faculty, staff and students, can also serve as a valuable
resource for others interested in education on
these topics. It provides not only curriculum materials and
resources, but also links to studies on
employment industry projections, along with information on
certification and industry credentials and
much more.

Resource for Journalists
Advanced Biofuels USA strives to provide a well-rounded source
of information for a variety of audiences
from legislators and their staffs at local, state and federal
levels to journalists and reporters to students,
teachers and the general public, as well as to industry
professionals in all aspects of the value chain.
We often provide one-on-one consultation with a variety of
individuals; and do occasional interviews with
reporters for the record and on background. We often refer
reporters and others to a variety of resources
in addition to those on our web site. Don't hesitate to call or

individual or group beginning to think about advanced

It also includes a class/group activity to develop a deeper
understanding of the concept of sustainability
from economic, environmental and social perspectives. After the
exercise and a review of some
elements pertinent to each of those legs of the sustainability
analysis stool, the presentation goes into
deeper discussions of the make-up of plant cells, explanations
of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.
We hope in future presentations or additions to this
presentation to
delve into the properties and construction of algae and
cyanobacteria, as well. The presentation wraps up with a list
of
jobs related to an advanced biofuels industry.

Jason Rathod accompanied Joanne Ivancic to Oakdale Middle
School in Frederick, Maryland and caught this shot of her
presentation to Anita Waravdekar's science classes,
Using the above materials. Ivancic remarked on the stamina it
takes to teach animated 8th graders all
day and wondered if people really appreciate what goes into
being an effective teacher.
She also noted that this
class, in small group activities, grasped some of the most
complex challenges facing the development and
deployment of advanced biofuels, and had effective
brainstorming sessions resulting in viable ideas for solving
them.
They were developing
concepts that highly paid
government and private professionals were just beginning to
grasp
themselves. For example, one group discussing carbon life
cycle
analysis soon concluded that if the transportation trucks,
farming

equipment and refineries were operating using renewable fuels
and biofuels, the carbon footprint would
be much better than it is now while they have to use fossil
fuels because the others aren't as available.
Another group decided that since it cost so much to transport
raw biomass long distances, it would be
good to find ways to convert the biomass so that it could be
taken further for the same cost.
An interesting note was that the students didn't realize at
first that
the ethanol in fuel was the same as the ethanol in wine,
beer,
spirits, and in the "moonshine" made not so long ago in the
hills
they could see from the classroom window. Many adults also
fail
to make that association.
