‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

Good Morning & Welcome to Friday's trading action at Dalal Street, dated 14th

of September 2018.

In early action, SGX Nifty is seen zooming this Friday morning, up around 81 points at

11,481, primarily on news report that the Trump administration is giving China another

chance to try to stave off new tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese exports.

As per media reports the fresh round of trade talks between the U.S. and China,

the world’s two largest economies could take place later this month. The

Chinese Commerce Ministry said it welcomed the invitation.

In Thursday's trade, China’s Shanghai Composite rebounded 1.1% higher. Hong Kong's

Hang Seng flared up 2.5%. Japan's Nikkei too ended up 0.96%.

Amidst this backdrop, it appears bulls will be back in action, and we suspect short covering

+ bargain hunting to be the primary theme for the day.

Up, Up and Away!

The big question: Will Nifty give up gains after a blockbuster open?.

Unlikely! We say so because, the market prospects likely to remain upbeat for the day on

optimism of trade related talks between the two economic superpowers. We suspect, the

benchmark Nifty is on pace for some sizeable short covering -- aggressive targets on Nifty

in near term could be at 11,575 mark.

Our call of the day says as Nifty holds above the 11,211 mark, establishing long positions

should be the preferred strategy. Stock specific action again likely to dominate trading

action. Please note, many a front line stocks have corrected sharply n the recent corrective

declines, and investors should look to allocate new short term long exposure on

fundamentally strong stocks.

Long story short: Make hay while the sun shines at Dalal Street.

Now before we get into detail, let's see what else caught our eye in the last 36

hours.

1. There is a big question mark with regards to next round of talks on a trade

agreement between U.S and Canada.

2. The Turkish lira was seen rebounding in Thursday's trade, up 2.1593% after the

Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey raised its one-week repo rate by 6.25%

points to 24% from 17.75%. Interestingly, the Turkish lira has lost 40% against the

dollar this year on backdrop of inflation spiking to nearly 18%.

3. The Bank of England left rates untouched amidst concerns for slowing growth. The

European Central Bank too left rates unchanged.

4. According to official data released post-market hours on Wednesday, the consumer

inflation eased to 3.69% in August, below the Reserve Bank of India's medium-term

target of 4%. Retail inflation cooled to a 10-month low in August.

5. Steel minister wants import duty on 'coking coal' to be scrapped: Steel minister

Chaudhary Birender Singh said on Thursday he wanted the finance ministry to scrap

the 2.5% duty on imports of coking coal, a key steelmaking raw material, to limit

input costs.

6. Industrial output expanded by 6.6% in July,

7. Apple unveils new iPhone models.

STOCKS TO WATCH:

• Our chart of the day suggests establishing long positions in PVR with

intermonth perspective while with interweek perspective aggressive bulls could

look to buy NMDC & BATA.

‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

• At the current level, the rupee has declined more than 13% against the greenback so far this year.

MACRO WATCH:

• The U.S job growth in August was strong and topped analysts' expectations. The US economy added 201,000 jobs, while the unemployment

rate stayed at 3.9% near 18-year low.

• The strong U.S jobs report is seen as supporting the Federal Reserve’s intention to hike rates at least once more in September, and possibly

once more in December.

• The policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee is slated to convene its two-day gathering on Sept. 26.

• Higher rates can hurt the appeal of gold and strengthen the U.S. dollar.

• On backdrop of strength in Crude-oil prices and tanking Indian Rupee, Dalal Street is fearing an interest rate hike by the RBI at its next

meeting in October.

What Technical Tells Us on Nifty: Nifty ended with major gains in Wednesday's trade, up 0.73%. Volatility was hallmark & ruled the roost.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. The BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.52%. The BSE Small-Cap index fell

0.27%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.

Technically speaking, key support for the day on Nifty is at 11,211 mark. The technical landscape will worsen only if Nifty closes below the 11,211

mark as that would open the door to massive technical selling, possibly quickly to the 10,750-10,901 zone.

The intraday bias is neutral/positive and buying on any corrective declines should be the preferred strategy.

For the day, we believe, Nifty will trade with positive bias with upside targets at 11,461 mark. The make or break levels hurdles are at 11,575

mark.

The price action for Nifty is suggesting that we are likely to see an 11,225-11,600 range in near term with neutral bias.

Bulls Vs. Bears: Time to Pick a Side!!

Volatility likely to be the hallmark of today's trade. In the near term, Nifty likely to trade in a broad range of 11201-11551 zone.

Preferred trade on Nifty: Nifty (11370): Buy on any corrective declines to 11320-11345 zone, targeting 11461 zone with stop at 11211.

Preferred trade on Bank Nifty: Bank Nifty (26819): Establish short positions between 27151-27251 zone, targeting 26501 zone and then at

26001-26101 zone with strict stop at 27801.
