This year, Cosmo attended the Saskatoon Exhibition and as usual, it didn’t disappoint! We were busy counting down the days leading up to the Exhibi-tion and watching as Prairie-land Park slowly turned into a sea of rides and bright lights. We loved the smell of all our favourite foods! The common question around the building was not if, but when everyone would get the chance to spend the day at one of their favourite summer events! The week kicked off with the Ex Parade, where the beautiful cars and floats came by, throwing treats and prizes at the crowd! The rest of the week consisted of getting ready early at Cosmo with hats, sunscreen and pack-ing a BBQ lunch. Arriving at the Ex, we would wander the midway, stopping for treats and
games. Every now and then, a few brave souls tested out the rides. There was laughter and memories were made every minute of the day. Some of these memories wouldn’t have been made without the help from the Shriners. Every year, they donate enough passes so each division at Cosmo can bring a group and have the experience of a lifetime! These lucky individuals get free ad-mission, ride wristbands and a hotdog/hamburger lunch that day. We are so appreciative of the donation made every year and we hope that the tradition continues! Thank you to all the staff and volunteers that helped make these days ones to remember! -Maegen Urdal Recreation Coordinator

Marj passed away peacefully at
home, Kinsmen Manor, with her sister
by her side.
Marj began working at Cosmo in Oc-
tober of 1997. At this time, she at-
tended Cosmo part time as well as at-
tending the Sherbrooke Day Program
part time. In January of 1998, Marj
chose to begin working at Cosmo full
time. At Cosmo, Marj spent most of her
time working in the Contracts Division.
She worked on jobs such as mail in-
serts, labelling, collating, and sewing
pollination tents. A favourite job Marj
looked forward to was medical pack-
aging. Marj also took great pride in her
time working with the lunch assistance
program in the Life Skills Training Di-
vision. Marj transferred to the Seniors
Division at Cosmo and most recently
divided her time between Cosmo and
the Cosmo Day Program at Elmwood.
Making hook rugs, scrapbooking, puz-
zles, coffee, and picture taking were
some of the things that became a part
of Marj’s days. An all time favourite
activity was to play bingo and win a
prize. Coffee, a donut or chocolate and
a conversation with Marj and you
would hear about her family and how
she looked forward to spending time
with them.
Marj was an independent, strong
willed woman who had a great sense
of humour; she loved to tell jokes. To
those who knew her, Marj will be re-
membered for her kindness to cowork-
ers and her generous heart. Marj will
be fondly remembered by her many
friends and coworkers at Cosmo.

It is with deep sadness that we say
farewell to Heather Mcbain, who
passed away on August 12th 2014
with her brother by her side. Heather
started at Cosmo January 21st, 1976
spending many years in the Con-
tracts Division where she was a great
worker. She was most recently a
beloved full-time participant of the
Cosmo Day Program at Elmwood
Manor. She would spend her time
humming an endless stream of Elvis
hits while enjoying a plethora of out-
ings such as getting coffee, visiting
the animals at the SPCA and attend-
ing Blades games. We were privi-
leged enough to support Heather on
her last trip to the Ex just a few days
before her last. Heather enjoyed the
sights, sounds, delicious food and
found a new Elvis Presley t-shirt she
couldn’t leave without. To say
Heather loved Elvis was an under-
statement. Equipped with all kinds of
memorabilia from CD’s to a teddy
bear named Elvis, Heather never
went far without one of her keep-
sakes in tow. About one year ago,
Elmwood Manor staff felt it neces-
sary to ask Heather’s family to come
for one last visit due to her declining
health, but she kept on fighting,
rarely missing a day at the Day Pro-
gram and maintaining a positive dis-
position throughout. Heather was a
strong and enduring human being
with a lovely spirit that was easily
loved by staff and residents alike.
Heather will be missed greatly. From
all of the Cosmo staff, thank you for
the sunshine you brought into our
lives.

On July 30th, 2014 Scott Jacklin
passed away. Scott started work at
Cosmo on August 7, 2001. He
worked for many years in Waste
Reduction running the controls for
the belt and working at the top of
the hopper. Scott spent his last six
years working in the Contracts Di-
vision. You could often see Scott
skillfully “whittling” away his bam-
boo sticks, or helping on some jobs
in the Area. Scott loved to make
people laugh, and you would often
see him dancing in the area, singing
or entertaining everyone with
some of his antics. Scott always
wanted to be a cowboy and you
could find him at Cosmo wearing
his cowboy hat, sheriff’s badge and
his cowboy boots. Scott was a
Blades fan, Riders fan, and most of
all, he loved his wrestling. Scott
was a very caring and gentle man
and we all miss our “special cow-
boy”, who is riding his horse up in
heaven now.

don’t go away.
They walk beside us eve-
ryday.
Unseen, unheard, but al-
ways near.
Still loved, missed and
very dear.”

We hopped in the van for our road trip to Calgary when suddenly, Joel Birtles thought he lost his wallet. We pulled over on the side of the highway to begin our search. The six of us were scavenging through the van when Joel realized his wallet was right where we thought it was the entire time…right next to him. Stewart Dombowsky, Joel Birtles, Kelly McRuvie, Melanie Harriman and staff members Chantal Gosselin and Jenna Johnson giggled away and sang to old country all the way to Calgary. Our second day was spent at the Calgary Zoo where we saw hippos,
giraffes, rhinos, gorillas, monkeys and much more! After a long day in the sun, we napped in the hotel before going for supper. Afterwards, we went to the Calgary tower and took an elevator ride up to see the stunning views of the city. We swam in the pool before bed where Melanie got her wish of dunking Chantal in the pool. On our third day, we took the group to Calaway Park. With the encourage-ment of her friends, Melanie coura-geously tried the “Free Fallin” ride where riders are strapped to their seats, brought to the top of the tower and then dropped at a high speed. Even if Melanie was white as a sheet, she kept saying, “one more time!” Another highlight was the Vortex rollercoaster with two upside-down loops and several sharp turns. Luckily, we decided to hold off on having until after the ride. Everyone was sound asleep on our
trek home. The constant laughter with
great friends was a great way to
spend four days.
Thank you Top of the Rock for giving us the opportunity to have a fantastic trip that we will laugh about for ages! -Chantal Gosselin, Coordinator of Volunteer Services -Jenna Johnson, Therapies Coordinator

Hey there folks, This month has been great and fun, but why? Because it is summer and yup! You guessed it, it’s almost time to go back to school. Anyway, summer was great and I am glad that fall is just around the corner. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to say that I was recently in a play called “Better to be Safe than Sorry”. Thank you to all who came out and watched it. Sincerely yours, Brian Adam Skipping Stones
