Children seek to imitate those whom they admire. Fathers are often this very person. This seems to be the case above when Amon chose to follow in his father, Manasseh’s, footsteps, to do evil in the sight of the Lord. Manasseh’s early years were given to sin, “So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel” (2nd Chronicles 33:9). Later on in his life Manasseh humbled himself and returned unto the Lord. But for Amon, his son, it appears that Manasseh’s repentance came too late, “Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem. But he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them; And humbled not himself before the Lord, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more. And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own house” (2nd Chronicles 33:21-24). However Josiah, Manasseh’s grandson, may have been influenced by his grandfather’s example. The Bible says of Josiah, “Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. “AS HIS FATHER”

mon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in

Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Judah.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his father Manasseh did. And

he walked in all the way that his father walked in, and served the idols that his father served, and

worshipped them: And he forsook the Lord God of his fathers, and walked not in the way of the

Lord” (2nd Kings 21:19-22).

Children seek to imitate those whom they admire. Fathers are often this very person.

This seems to be the case above when Amon chose to follow in his father, Manasseh’s,

footsteps, to do evil in the sight of the Lord. Manasseh’s early years were given to sin, “So

Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the

heathen whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel” (2nd Chronicles 33:9).

Later on in his life Manasseh humbled himself and returned unto the Lord. But for Amon,

his son, it appears that Manasseh’s repentance came too late, “Amon was two and twenty

years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerusalem. But he did that

which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as did Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto

all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them; And humbled

not himself before the Lord, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon

trespassed more and more. And his servants conspired against him, and slew him in his own

house” (2nd Chronicles 33:21-24). However Josiah, Manasseh’s grandson, may have been

influenced by his grandfather’s example. The Bible says of Josiah, “Josiah was eight years

old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. And he did

that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father

and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left” (2nd Chronicles

34:1-2). Perhaps the death of Amon, Josiah’s father, at such a tender

young age, and the repentance of Manasseh, his grandfather, in his later

days, served to help persuade Josiah to turn unto God. What are some of

the lessons that we, as fathers, can learn from this story, “For

whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,

that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

As fathers, children look unto us for the proper example as to how they should live their

lives while on this earth. Their morality, worship, work ethic, etc., is often based upon the

example of the rule of the father in the home, “Let the deacons be the husband of one wife,

ruling their children and their own houses well” (1st Timothy 3:12). Through obedience to

the gospel, or lack thereof, fathers teach their children the importance, or the lack of

importance, of spiritual things, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;

and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). Unwittingly, they teach their

sons and their daughters how to respect, or disrespect, their wives, husbands, mothers, sisters,

and women in general; as well as fidelity, or unfaithfulness in matrimony. “And unto the

married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and

if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the

husband put away his wife” (1st Corinthians 7:10-11). “Husbands, love your wives, and be

not bitter against them;” (Colossians 3:19). Paul told Timothy to entreat, “The elder women

as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity” (1st Timothy 5:2). The Wiseman penned,

“Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when

she is old” (Proverbs 23:22). Concerning our work ethic, Paul told

Timothy, “But if any provide not for his own, and specially those of his own

house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel” (1st Tim. 5:8).

Older women and mothers should be teaching young girls their proper role,

behavior, dress, etc., in the home and life, just as the father and older men should be

instructing the younger men (Titus 2:3-5).

Is the world a better place, or worse, because our children are “as their

fathers”?

ECAPTURING THE LOVE AND BOLDNESS OF

THE APOSTLES By: Ivie Powell

Without question, a diligent study of the book of Acts is one of the greatest needs

in the church today! One cannot help but be amazed and thrilled at the reception of the gospel

in the first century. On the day of Pentecost about 3000 obeyed the gospel (Acts 2:37-41). In

Acts 4:4 we read of about 5000 men obeying the gospel. In Acts 5:14 multitudes both men

and women were obedient unto the gospel. Turning to Acts 6 there was a great reception to

the gospel so much so that Luke records, “And the word of God increased; and the number of

the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient

to the faith (Acts 6:7).

No doubt, there was “joy unspeakable” on the part of the apostles to witness such

marvelous reception to the glorious gospel of Christ, God’s power unto salvation (Rom.

1:16). Bear in mind, there is always great joy in the heart when one obeys the gospel. One

such case is found in Acts 8 where the eunuch “went on his way rejoicing” (Acts 8:39). One

can see in their “mind’s eye” the outpouring of joy on the part of thousands when they were

“made free from sin” (Rom. 6:18). Such outpouring to the gospel did not go unnoticed by

Satan and his cohorts. In commenting on this, J.W. McGarvey wrote:

“But just at the moment of hope and joy the calm was followed by a storm…this

sudden disturbance of the interested audience by a body of armed men rushing

through their midst and seizing Peter and John, was a very bold and startling

movement on the part of the unbelievers” (New Commentary on Acts of the

Apostles, J.W. McGarvey, pp.66-67).

The reason Peter and John were brought before the “rulers, and elders, and scribes”

(Acts 4:5) is because the Sadducees were “Being grieved that they taught the people and

preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead” (Acts 4:2). After spending the night

under guard, Peter and John were called before the Sanhedrin, which was the high court of the

Jew, and were asked, ‘By what power, or by what name have ye done this” (Acts 4:7)?

Without hesitation, “Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 4:8) boldly declared, “be it

known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of

Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man

stand before you whole. This is the stone which was set at naught of you builders, which is

become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other

name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:10-12).

R “As His Father” By Larry Yarber

“Recapturing the Love and Boldness of the Apostles” By Ivie Powell

No doubt, “annas, the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as

were of the kindred of the high priest…”(Acts 4:6) knew that most men when brought before

the Sanhedrin were greatly intimidated and fearful. So, when Peter made their defense, the

reaction of the court was described by Luke as follows. “Now when they saw the boldness of

Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled;

and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). Not being able

to deny the miracle (Acts 4:16), they “…commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the

name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, whether it be right in the

sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the

things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:18-20).

From Acts 2-4 thousands obeyed the gospel. It is at this point (Acts 4) open

opposition to the cause of Christ began. Such opposition did not slow down or stop the

Apostles in proclaiming ‘Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2). The love for lost souls

and zeal in spreading the gospel of Christ is captured by Paul in Colossians 1:23 when he said

that the gospel had been “preached to every creature which is under heaven.”

When brethren today have the same love for lost souls, they too will be zealous in proclaiming

and defending the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ!

The Foolish Man…Built His House on the Sand

At the end of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), our Lord delivered the parable of the wise and foolish builders. In Matthew 7:21, He said, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” He then taught in verses 22-23 that just calling on His name is not enough to be saved. One must do the will of God to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

The parable which follows in Matthew 7:24-27 defines the difference between the wise and

foolish man, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

The great contrast in this parable is the difference in the foundations upon which each man

built. Even the very best built house can fall to ruins if the foundation is not solid. In real estate the most important consideration is location. The foolish man did not carefully consider the location of his house. He built it upon the shifting sand, instead of the solid foundation of rock.

The foolish man in this parable represents one who hears the sayings of Jesus, but then does

not do them. He knows better, but persists in disobedience. To learn and know the Word of God is not enough. Certainly, knowledge of the Truth is good and essential for a Christian to grow. However, if we do not practice what we know, then we become like the foolish man and deceive ourselves, as James wrote, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).

The purpose of a physical house is for shelter and security. A house is to protect us from the elements, as well as provide security for our possessions and our life and health. Some of the recent storms in this country have shown the devastation which can occur if one does not carefully consider where and how their house is built. A good foundation is essential for a house to be able to stand and weather the storms.

The need to build on a solid foundation is much more important in building our spiritual house

than the house where we live during this life. The foolish man underestimated the severity of the storms in building his house. We must build with an understanding that our spiritual house will be tested and tried. The trials and difficulties of this life as well as the coming judgment in the last day will test how we have built our houses (2 Corinthians 5:10). Certainly, we must understand that we are building for eternity.

Both builders in this parable had points of similarity. They both saw the necessity of building a

house and having a place of refuge from the coming storms. The foolish man had some interest in his welfare and did something, unlike some who do nothing about the salvation of their soul. Both builders rested with a sense of security. However, the foolish man’s sense of security was not properly founded, much like those who trust their feelings in religion instead of actually doing the will of God.

There are also differences between these two builders. They differed in their personal

character. One was wise because of what he did, while the other was foolish because of what he failed to do. Some are foolish builders because they know to do good, but don’t do it. James wrote, “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” (James 4:17). They also differed in the end result. The wise man’s house stood in the storms, while the foolish man’s house fell “and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:27). This is a picture of the spiritual fall of those who hear and know the Truth, but do not put it into practice in their life.

In the practical sense, the foolish man is one who may obey the Gospel of Christ, but does not

continue to work out his “own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:10). The foolish man is one who disrespects the Word of God by being disobedient (John 12:48), one who seeks the things of the world before the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33), one who is unconcerned with the physical and spiritual welfare of others (Matthew 25:31-46; Galatians 6:1-2), one who does not teach the Gospel to others (Matthew 28:18-20), one who does not faithfully assemble with the saints (Hebrews 10:25), and one who does not prepare for eternity by doing the commandments of God (Revelation 22:14).

The great blessings and benefits, both now and eternally, of hearing and doing God’s Word

should motivate us to avoid being like the foolish man. James wrote, “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” (James 1:25). Indeed, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14).
