A Note From Our Pastor
Dear Friends,
For decades now Sundays have been shared by two relatively compatible
religions. One, of course, is the Church whose sanctuaries are filled with
worship in the morning. The other has been football, the NFL specifically,
whose stadiums have been filled with worship in the afternoons. The
relationship between the two has been pretty good, the only real friction
coming when church worship dares to go beyond noon and infringe upon
the Cowboy’s kickoff. Of late, however, the NFL has experienced a
desecration of it’s normally sanguine sanctuary.
Football, which was once was a unifying presence in our diverse culture, has become
politicized. What began with a lone player protesting what he believed to be a systemic racism
rampant among police departments has now spread to virtually every team in the NFL. Their
dissent has been expressed in refusing to stand for the national anthem. This, of course, has
angered many fans who don’t appreciate this political intrusion into a sphere normally free of
such conflict. To make matters worse the NFL has been rather selective in their tolerance/
encouragement of these particular expressions of free speech.
While everyone would love this to go away it’s not going to. So how should we respond?
First, irritation should not dictate our response. Irritation evokes reactions that do not lead to
good relational outcomes. Second, we should all be committed to truth. There has been way,
way too many people who have not waited for facts to be responsibly presented. Absent the
facts, all reactions are premature. “No justice, no peace” is a popular maxim. Well we need to
add another maxim, “No Truth, no justice.” Truth can help us address the issues.
What then are the facts? A recent Harvard study found that evidence suggests that police are
not racially biased in the application of deadly force. Does that mean that things are OK? By no
means. The same study found that “black and Hispanic civilians are indeed more likely to
be manhandled, handcuffed or beaten by the police — even if they are compliant and law-
abiding.” In another article, Jim Denison notes the following: “In one study, African American
males were twice as likely to be stopped by police in cars or on foot. Another study showed
racial disparities in traffic stops during the day, when the race of the driver can be seen, but not
at night.”
All this is to say that, in America, we still have a ways to go. But we can’t fix something we
won’t acknowledge. In that sense, player protests have validity.
That said, is refusing to stand for the national anthem the way to protest? I think not. The
flag and national anthem are symbols not so much of what we are but what we aspire to be.
Hence they in essence stand for what these players are seeking. Secondly, on purely practical
level, the protests don’t arouse peoples sense of justice but rather arouse anger at the perceived
disrespect for those aspirations and principles. It seems to me that the Dallas Cowboys threaded
the needle last night when they knelt in protest and solidarity in the center of the field and stood
for the national anthem.
In the end, as a follower of Christ we must seek justice and righteousness. We also are to
submit to the truth wherever that may lead. Holding to the values of justice, righteousness and
truth are the only ground that will lead us to the resolution we seek.

Operation Christmas Child
Fall is in the air, which means Christmas is around the corner. If you have not picked up a shoebox to fill for a needy child, I
would like to encourage you to do so. Boxes are located in the Narthex of the Sanctuary. Boxes are due back Sunday, November 12. Operation Christmas Child National Collection Week is November 13-20, 2017. Our church is a Drop Off Location and Marti Busbee is the Drop Off Location Team Leader. She will be asking for volunteers to work at the FUMC Drop Off Location. Because of Hurricane Harvey there may be a lot of people who do not donate shoeboxes this year that normally do. We have boxes to give out for people to fill. Tell someone about Operation Christmas Child so they too can donate a shoebox and a child will hear about Jesus. Every shoebox represents a child. Glorial Jeane Rosewall Neches River Area Coordinator Operation Christmas Child
Ponderations by Roy Faubion
“Sing to the Lord a new song…”
(Isaiah 42:10) The mockingbird must have been unusually
happy the other day. She sang loudly, cheerfully and with great energy. As I listened to her per-formance I thought, there is no greater joy than what I heard from that bird as she sang from her heart.
Surely God was listening. I suspect there are days the mockingbirds do
not feel like turning loose and singing loudly and cheerfully. But they do, and our world is a better place because they sing. Maybe we, to, have a calling to make a joyful noise.

LIBERTY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH : AN OLD CHURCH
WITH A STRONG HEART
Liberty Lines……………….By John Sparks
Liberty’s Fellowship Hall has been pressed into service for worship on Sundays, while the Sanctuary undergoes a complete renovation and expansion. The Hall has proved to be worthy of the additional use although quarters are sometimes tight—especially for the monthly Fellowship Dinners.
Construction progress has been encouraging and
ahead of schedule—now, with the expansion fully enclosed with exterior walls and a new metal roof, with the electrical and sound system wiring completed, and with the HVAC system in place, attention turns to the install phase for the insulation and drywall. Amazing progress! A committee of Liberty members is actively reviewing carpeting, paint colors, lighting and many other finishing touches for the interior. The wall behind the Pulpit will feature a new stained glass window commissioned exclusively for Liberty. A concrete ramp entry will be located on the east side of the Sanctuary which will provide for ADA specified handicapped entry and exit as well as for funeral service casket access.
This year’s Annual Community Hayride will take
place on Sunday, October 15 with activities starting at 4:00 pm. Tractor drawn wagons with freshly cut hay bales again ply the nearby roads, traveling throughout some of Wood County’s most scenic countryside. The event is attended each year by members of both Liberty and Quitman Churches as well as friends and neighbors from our drawing areas. This year Quitman UMC will provide hot dogs, etc. While Liberty provides drinks and desserts. The Liberty GaGa pit is always alive with action as the younger attendees enjoy a recreational treat of modern day dodge ball. There is a pavilion with a few picnic tables, but most enjoy small group interactions on the spacious lawn. (Please remember to bring your folding chairs). Fellowship Hall is available should the weather require us to take cover.
Liberty UMC is attempting to chronicle the efforts
and contributions of our members and groups as we provide Christian outreach through individual service and monetary responses to the needs of those around us. A recording book is available near the bookcases on the west wall of Fellowship Hall. Please place your expressions of Christian Love in this book.
