INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY 2019 NELSON MANDELA CHALLENGE

    CELEBRATING THE 25th EDITION

  • President of the South African Football Association

    MESSAGE FROM DR DANNY JORDAAN

Today’s match presents us with the perfect

opportunity to recall exactly what Madiba

stood for and to stand together collectively

as a proudly diverse nation to emphatically

    denounce xenophobia. South Africa’s long

walk to freedom was travelled across this

    wonderful continent where many under-

ground doors were opened to welcome our

exiles. Countries from Senegal to Zimbabwe

hosted unity talks which ultimately led to the

    negotiated settlement that ended apartheid.

Zambia also played a vital role in helping us

to overcome the struggle and Chipolopolo

graced us with their presence at the first ever

Nelson Mandela Challenge in 1994 when the

team were warmly welcomed by our first

democratically elected President on the day

    of his inauguration.

We eagerly await the formidable challenge of

Mali this afternoon - the Eagles have often

punched above their weight, finishing third in

the 2012 and 2013 AFCON Finals after twice

eliminating the host nations, South Africa

being the 2013 host. We are on the losing end

of head-to-head encounters with this West

African nation ranked two above us on the

continent, but we are ready to even up the

    numbers under our newly-appointed Head

    Coach Molefi Ntseki.

I thank Mandela Bay Development Agency/

Stadium and the City for their role as hosts in

    honouring South Africa’s greatest statesman.

It is the third time the Challenge comes to my

hometown, now proudly named after the man

who was born and grew up in the beautiful

Eastern Cape Province. Finally my thanks to

the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund who

have partnered with SAFA to enable football

to be the only sporting code in the country to

pay tribute to Madiba in this fitting manner.

    FOR BAFANA BAFANA

Every edition of the Nelson Mandela Challenge is a reminder that there is no better foundation for any nation than its children and that the well-being of its children is a measure of a society that cares. The Challenge continues to be a combination of bringing cheer to fans and raising awareness for the good cause for which the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was established. Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund CEO Ms Sibongile Mkhabela.

Because Madiba was such a renowned global icon, the name Mandela means that teams from across the world give it their all to lift the coveted trophy in this match which celebrates his life and work. SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan

IN THE NELSON MANDELA CHALLENGE An international friendly played annually by Bafana Bafana since 1994 and organised by the South African Football Association with the proceeds raised benefitting the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The Challenge has featured many big footballing nations from around the world such as Argentina, Brazil, the USA, France, Netherlands, Cameroon and Nigeria. The Challenge represents SAFA’s commitment to honour and further Madiba’s legacy and to keep his memory alive through the beautiful game.

    MESSAGE FROM MS SIBONGILE MKHABELA

As we step into the next chapter following last year’s

centenary of the birth of former president Nelson

Mandela, we know that it is up to us to continue the

exceptional legacy left by our founder. Nelson Mandela

always prioritised children in his policies and his work,

he was always looking to a brighter future. It is with this

mandate in mind that the Nelson Mandela Children’s

Fund (the Fund) has set out its 2016-2021 strategy,

which remains a significant work in progress.

We remain grateful to SAFA for the support it has given

the Fund in the last 25 years of this partnership to

enable much of this important work.

Operating within a complex ecosystem that functions

optimally through collaboration, the Fund exists to

change the way society treats its children and youth.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was founded in 1995 by former statesman Mr Nelson Mandela who donated a third of his salary for the duration of his five-year presidency. The Fund is an advocacy development agency and a leading champion for the general wellbeing of children. Informed by its vision to change the way society treats its children and youth, the Fund’s mandate is to address issues that affect children and youth within the context of family and community.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital South Africa experienced an overwhelming influx of children who did not have sufficient access to primary and tertiary healthcare. In 2005, the Fund received a mandate from Madiba to look into building a dedicated paediatric facility for children in the region. The Fund established the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust which embarked on a capital campaign to raise funds to build the hospital. The South African Men’s Senior National Team Bafana Bafana, accompanied by SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan (middle) and Coach Molefi Ntseki (right), visited the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH), the flagship project of the Fund on the 7th October 2019. CEO of NMCH, Dr Mandisa Maholwana (left), said, “We would like to thank Bafana Bafana for making the time to pay a visit to the hospital and hope that the team will be back soon to spread more cheer and excitement to our patients and our staff whose daily mission is to make sure our children can also grow up to be the soccer stars of tomorrow.”

This is through various programmes including Child Survival, Development and Thriving

Programme focused on decreasing child mortality in various regions and Child Safety

and Protection Programme to safety and protection of our children. Advocacy remains

a priority in how we amplify the voices of our youth. The Fund’s South African Children’s

Manifesto 2019 campaign was developed by a group of children ranging from the ages

of 10 to 18. The document addresses four categories affecting children; child protection,

survival, development and participation. In light of seeing where our children and youth

are growing, the Fund concluded that there is a need for them to have their own structure.

Thus, the initiative to redesign our Youth Leadership Programme is currently in progress.

Our Sustainable Livelihoods Programme has proved to be the golden thread in our

programmes; strengthening economic capacity for families and communities has been

    the focus this year.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our donors, partners and the

community of young people carrying out the Fund’s work to each corner of the country.

We are indebted to your contributions and loyalty.

    MESSAGE FROM MS ZUKS RAMASIA

Since its inception in May 1994, the Nelson Mandela

Challenge has become an important highlight on the

sporting calendar in our country. This is not only due to

the great football nations who honoured the invitations

over the years, but also to the fact that it reminds all of

us to continue carrying on Madiba’s legacy.

I am proud that our national carrier, South African

Airways, continues to fly our nation’s flag across the

globe while also carrying the legacy of our great icon in

many ways through various community programmes.

Through the SAA Voyager programme, we continue

to support the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund by

donating Voyager miles, thus assisting the Fund in

reaching out to communities where assistance is most

needed and to children by expanding the work done for

the youth of South Africa in particular.

Nelson Mandela encouraged us to strive to make a

difference in our communities. Through our CSI

Programmes, SAA is committed to making a difference

in the lives of our fellow South Africans. These

programmes include providing support with medical

emergency transportation for those in need of medical

treatment around the globe and disaster relief across the

    continent.

It is fitting that this year’s Nelson Mandela Challenge is hosted in the Nelson Mandela

Bay Metropolitan Municipality, a Metro proudly named after our former President. The

Challenge visits the Eastern Cape for the third time with the province having hosted

Senegal in 2005 and later Ivory Coast in 2011. Today we welcome Mali, another power-

house of African football, to our shores for this international friendly match. I have no

doubt that the beautiful city of Port Elizabeth and its people will be great hosts of this

    prestigious event.

From staff and management at South African Airways, we wish both teams all the best

    this afternoon.

  • Deputy Executive Mayor: Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

    MESSAGE FROM COUNCILLOR TSHONONO BUYEYE

What a fantastic day for sport. It is with great pleasure

that we welcome Bafana Bafana, the Eagles of Mali,

National Executive Members of the South African

Football Association (SAFA), officials of the Mali

Football Federation and all passionate football-loving

supporters to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and the

beautiful province of the Eastern Cape.

Today, after many years of planning and waiting for the

right time, people and ingredients, we are humbled and

excited to stage the Nelson Mandela Challenge at the

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Bafana Bafana last

played at our venue eight years ago against Ivory

Coast. Over the years, the facility has managed to tell

the story (using sport and entertainment) of the human

spirit and what makes us who we are.

We are looking forward to an exhilarating game that

will be witnessed by all football enthusiasts – both

nationally and internationally. We as the City would like

to wish Coach Molefi Ntseki the best of luck during his

    tenure of leading Bafana Bafana.

In closing, I would like to wish both participating teams

well for today’s match and trust the people to have a

    great day with us.

“It’s extra effort that separates a winner from second

place. But winning takes a lot more than that, too. It

starts with a complete command of the fundamentals.

Then, it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-

sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love,

fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these

together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?”

    Message from

    SA Head Coach

Mali will present us with a headache

as they are very tough opponents –

first of all they are above us on the

FIFA rankings and they did well at

the AFCON recently in Egypt (round

    of 16).

I am also honoured to be part of this

great match to honour the greatest

    South African statesman, former

President Nelson Mandela. It is a

huge privilege to be leading the

team in this annual fixture and I am

confident that we will make sure the

trophy does not leave these shores.

This is a very important match for us

as it will determine our way forward

in the sense of how we are going to

play and approach matches. It will

be crucial for us to start the journey

of the AFCON qualifiers on a positive

note. What I also want to see from

the players is the mental attitude

that there are no friendly matches in

international football, we have to do

the best we can to win every fixture

    because winning must become a

habit. Once we do well against Mali,

it will stand us in good stead against

    Ghana and Sudan next month.

    Speaking to CAFonline.com at

AFCON 2019 Egypt this past July.

The Eagles boasted one of the

    youngest squads at the tournament

and advanced to the Round of 16

before losing to the Ivory Coast.

What is certain is that we have a

new philosophy on which we built

our team. If this philosophy contin-

ues, I dare to believe that there will

    be no psychological obstacle. We

have in mind that football is not

built by history but by the forces of

the day and those in the present.

The details will be on the pitch.

Mali has a new backbone with new

players and a new coach. Before the

tournament, we had a project of the

games and results we wanted. I can

    express my total satisfaction in

    terms of the human investment

because the project starts with the

players, the staff and the behavioral

aspect has been great. I am pleased

with the performance of my young

players who until today have played

according to the plans and patterns

we had set out to produce.
