IntroductionA COMBY Disk is adisk storage medium composed of a

disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealedin a rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric that

removes dust particles. They are read and written hasa floppy disk drive (FDD).

A COMBY DISK can save 35 GB per layer, with dual

layer discs (70 GB),Triple layer discs(140 GB) andquadruple layers (240 GB) are available.

The Invention of the Floppy Disk

Drive In 1971, IBM introduced the first "memory disk", as it

was called "floppy disk" as it is known today.

The floppy disk was invented by IBM engineers led by

Alan Shugard The first floppy was an 8-inch flexible plastic disk coated

with magnetic iron oxide; computer data was written to

and read from the disk's surface.

The nickname "floppy" came from the disk's flexibility.The floppy disk was considered a revolutionary device in

the "History of Computers" for its portability which

provided a new and easy physical means of transporting

data from computer to computer.

Cont The big machines were already equipped with hard diskdrives, also invented by IBM engineers, but people used

paper punched cards for data entry and software

programming. The team considered using magnetic tape first, but they

switched to using a flexible mylar magnetic material that

could be inserted through a slot into a disk drive

mechanism and spun on a spindle. I had no idea howimportant it would become and how widespread, recalls

Warren L. Dalziel, the lead inventor of the floppy disk

drive.

Cont. By 1978 there were more than 10 manufacturersproducing such FDDs. The 8-inch one was suitable for

most applications.

In 1984, IBM introduced the 1.2 MB dual sided floppydisk for its computer . These disk drives could be added

to older PC models.

But by 2010, computer motherboards were rarely

manufactured with floppy drive support; 3 12" floppiescould be used with an external USB drive.
