Esta guía pretende mostrar una información básica de carácter turístico, útil a quienes nos visiten, facilitando un primer acercamiento a la Sierra Sur.
La Comarca de la Sierra Sur de Jaén cuenta con un importante potencial turístico que ofertar, a su riqueza natural y paisajística hay que sumar un legado histórico y cultural que
merece la pena conocer. Componen el territorio los siguientes municipios:
ALCALÁ LA REAL, ALCAUDETE, CASTILLO DE LOCUBÍN, FRAILES, FUENSANTA, JAMILENA, MARTOS, TORREDELCAMPO, VALDEPEÑAS DE JAÉN y LOS VILLARES.
“SIERRA SUR DE JAÉN, TIERRAS DE ROMANCE Y LEYENDAS”
Este territorio adquirió gran trascendencia como frontera en tiempos en que importantes autores dieron vida a los romances, como máxime exponente el Arcipreste de Hita, nacido en Alcalá la Real. Esta época se caracterizó por el enfrentamiento y por las formas de convivencia que mantuvieron el reino nazarí y el cristiano, siendo durante siglos inspiración para numerosas leyendas. Testigos los castillos y atalayas característicos de nuestro territorio.
Proponemos un paseo inolvidable por la Sierra Sur desde tres perspectivas:
Leyendas y Tradición Medieval
Los romances y leyendas forman parte de nuestro acervo cultural, historias que han sido transmitidas de generación en generación haciendo referencia, la mayoría de ellas, a la época medieval y al pasado fronterizo, propiciando el origen de apasionantes leyendas que aún permanecen vivas en la memoria popular.
Pero esta zona, también es cuna de peculiares personajes ilustres: los santeros. Por lo general, sencillos pastores o labriegos que, después de recibir una gracia divina, consiguen facultades para sanar enfermedades o facilitar sabio consejo. Para acercarnos a esta tradición se ofrece la “Ruta de los Milagros”.
Vía Verde y Naturaleza
El aceite de oliva es algo más que la base de la economía de la Sierra Sur. Los vastos olivares, muchos de ellos centenarios, conviven con paisajes singulares y con agrestes sierras, que confieren a la Sierra Sur una fisonomía única. Por nuestro territorio discurre la Vía Verde del Aceite a la que añadimos una oferta complementaria ligada a la cultura del mundo del olivar.
Se suma a ello la Cultura del Agua, con parajes de especial belleza como el Nacimiento del Río San Juan, El de Rio Frio, Las Chorreras, Fuensanta o La Fuente Amuña.
Castillos y Monumentos
La Sierra Sur de Jaén posee una importante riqueza patrimonial, en la que tanto el dominio árabe como la reconquista cristiana y el poder de la Orden religioso-militar de Calatrava, han configurando en gran medida sus características.
El territorio está jalonado por importantes castillos como Las Fortaleza de Alcalá, Alcaudete, Martos, Castillo de Locubín, o las numerosas torres y atalayas, creadas con fines defensivos. Podemos conocer este legado a partir de “La Ruta de los Calatravos”. Además, descubriremos en cualquiera de sus municipios, destacables ejemplos de arquitectura civil y religiosa o interesantes muestras de arquitectura popular.
Patrimonio Natural de la Sierra Sur
La Sierra Sur de Jaén destaca por su riqueza natural, ofreciendo numerosas posibilidades para desarrollar actividades en la naturaleza, realizar rutas de senderismo, o disfrutar de su contemplación. En su variado paisaje sobresalen las Sierras de la Pandera, la Sierra de Martos y Torredelcampo. Parajes como los Tajos de Charilla en Alcalá, el Pecho de la Fuente en Jamilena, la Sierra de Ahillos en Alcaudete y La Sierra de La Martina en Frailes. Son Reservas Naturales Laguna Honda y Laguna del Chinche, humedales con origen en las escorrentías de pequeños arroyos.
Monumentos Naturales:
Pitillos (Valdepeñas de Jaén), relieve accidentado en torno a un pequeño valle del río Quiebrajano, rodeado por tres elevaciones superiores a los 1.200 m. Quejigo del Amo, también situado en Valdepeñas de Jaén, considerado como uno de los de mayores dimensiones del territorio andaluz.
Junto a todo esto en la Sierra Sur, disfrutaremos una amplia variedad gastronómica, en la que junto al aceite de oliva virgen están presentes los productos de la sierra, caza, ganadería y agricultura local donde las huertas nos ofrecen su cosecha. Destacamos el relleno de carnaval, la alboronía, setas de monte, guiso de bacalao, arroz con conejo, caldereta, o choto al ajillo. En la repostería tradicional la Manta Castillera, Alfajores, Almendrados y Buñuelos.

This guide pretends to provide a basic tourist information, to be useful for those who visit us, to offer them a pleasant approach to the Southern Mountains.
The region Southern Mountains of Jaen offers an important tourist potential, apart from its natural and landscape richness, it has a historic and cultural heritage that it is worth
knowing. It is composed of the following municipalities:
ALCALÁ LA REAL, ALCAUDETE, CASTILLO DE LOCUBÍN, FRAILES, FUENSANTA, JAMILENA, MARTOS, TORREDELCAMPO, VALDEPEÑAS DE JAÉN and LOS VILLARES.
“JAEN SOUTHERN MOUNTAINS, LAND OF ROMANCE AND LEGENDS”
This land obtained great significance as a border during the times when important authors wrote the romances, with Archpriest of Hita (Arcipreste de Hita) as the greatest exponent, and he was born in Alcalá la Real. The characteristic features of this period are the clash and the coexistence of the Nasrid and the Christian kingdoms, and this fact was the inspiration for many legends. Castles and watchtowers are examples of that period in our region.
We suggest an unforgettable walk around the Southern Mountains from three points of view:
Legends and medieval tradition
The romances and legends are part of our cultural Heritage, they are stories that have been transmitted from one generation to another. Most of them refer to the medieval period and to the border past and there are many of them that still remain in the popular memory.
This region is also birthplace for many distinguished and peculiar figures: the santeros. In general, they are simple shepherd or farmworker who, after receive a divine grace, they receive abilities to cure diseases or to provide wise advice. The “Route of the Miracles” is designed to get us closer to this tradition.
Green Way and Nature
The olive oil is something more than the basis of the economy in the Southern Mountains region. The immense olive groves, many of them are centenarian, live together with singular landscapes and rough mountains and they both make up the unique appearance of the Southern Mountains. The Olive Oil Green Way goes through our region and, moreover, there is a complementary offer related to the olive grove culture.
We have also the Culture of Water, with beautiful places such as the birthplace of the San Juan river, the Chorreras, Fuensanta or the Almuña fountain.
Castles and Monuments
The Southern Mountains of Jaen have an important patrimonial richness owing to the Arab rule, the Christian reconquest and the power of the religious-military order of Calatrava, that have mostly configured its features.
The region is marked by important castles such as the fortresses of Alcala, Alcaudete, Martos, Castle of Locubin, or the many towers and watchtowers, which were built with defensive purposes. We have the possibility to know this heritage through the “Route of the Calatravan”. Moreover, we will discover many examples of civil and religious architecture at any of the municipalities, as well as interesting buildings of popular architecture.
Southern Mountains Natural Patrimony
The Southern Mountains of Jaen stand out because of their natural richness, with many possibilities to do activities in nature, hiking, or just to observe the landscapes. This region offers a varied landscape, including the Pandera Mountains, that of Martos and Torredelcampo. There are also beautiful landscapes such as the Tajos de Charilla in Alcala, the Pecho de la Fuente in Jamilena, the Ahillos Mountains in Alcaudete and La Martina Mountains in Frailes. Laguna Honda and Laguna del Chinche are both nature reserves. They are wetlands started from the erosion of small streams.
Natural Monuments:
Pitillos (Valdepeñas de Jaen), rugged slopes around the small valley of the Quiebrajano river, surrounded by three elevations higher than 1,200 metres. Quejigo del Amo, also located in Valdepeñas de Jaen, it is considered to have one of the bigger dimensions in the whole Andalusian region.
We will also have the possibility to enjoy the wide variety of the gastronomy of the Southern Mountains. It includes the virgin olive oil, products from the mountains, from local hunting, ranching or agriculture, where the vegetable gardens offer their harvests. Some of the main specialties are the relleno de carnaval, the alboronia, mountain mushrooms, cod casserole, rabbit rice, fish stew, or garlic calf. Regarding traditional confectionery, we have Manta Castillera, Alfajores, Almendrados and Buñuelos.
