CHAIRMAN’S COLUMNWhat a summer!! The wettest June and July in living memory; the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; Andy Murray’s close run defeat by Roger Federer at Wimbledon; Bradley Wiggins fabulous success in the Tour de France. And then, as if all this wasn’t enough, Team GB stuns the nation with outstanding Olympic success and Andy gets his revenge! But there’s more; Milton Keynes Council finally get round to cutting the grass on grid road and neighbourhood verges. Perhaps they too deserve a medal!!

This is traditionally a quiet time in Local Government. It’s the holiday season, and if you add in the Olympic dimension, it’s not surprising that not much is happening. However, your Parish Council still needs to keep an eye on matters that affect us. Here’s an example: we received notification from Milton Keynes Partnership of minor changes to the Design Codes for the new development in Tattenhoe Park. These were relatively insignificant, and caused us no concerns. However, on closer inspection of the accompanying drawings, we noticed that it is planned to create a public ‘Walk and Cycle’ path to run through the middle of a large allotment site. This amounts to an invitation to the general public to help themselves to the fruit and vegetables being grown by allotment tenants. We have asked for this to be amended, and await their response.

To commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee, we purchased and sited eleven benches throughout the parish. Sadly, two of these have already been damaged by vandals. These were intended to give some pleasure to residents. Instead, some mindless idiots appear to have derived pleasure from damaging them. With all the good things going on in this country this year, incidents like this take the shine off somewhat, don’t you think?.

Community Committee ReportA new year in the Parish Council began in April, and at the first meeting of this committee in May I was both delighted and honoured to be elected as Chair by my fellow Councillors.

I was also pleased to have Councillor Dave Sanders elected as my deputy and hope that we can continue and move forward the great work that has previously been done by this committee and its retiring chair.

At the June meeting there were five grant applications, all of which the committee felt able to support.

Firstly it was MK Pride Community Interest Company, who needed help to stage the first MK Pride inclusion and awareness event. They are particularly keen to eradicate such things as school bullying by homophobic and transphobic actions on children who are in families where this is an issue, and hope this event will help raise awareness of the problem.

Secondly the MK Islamic Arts Heritage & Culture Organisation which, following last years successful event, want to make this years even bigger and better. Their main request was for help in hiring a marquee, an essential with this years changeable weather.

Our third applicant was MK Basketball Association, which was holding a sports extravaganza in July, involving tournaments in several sports and various other sporting and fun activities. The funding required

was for various items of equipment to help the day go well.

Fourthly MK Korfball Club wanted help in staging a Korfstock tournament and family fun day, at which they hoped to promote the sport and help recruit new members.

Finally Tattenhoe Youth football club requested funding to purchase kit for the under 10s girls team. This is a new team which has been training hard and in September starts to move into playing matches.

Following that enjoyable meeting, being able to help such diverse organisations, it was disappointing to cancel the July meeting, as there were no applications and no business to discuss. Therefore I have now to sayCALLING ALL LOCAL ORGANISATIONSWe have funds to help you with anything that benefits the people of this Parish, so please contact us and ask.Our friendly Clerk and her staff are only too happy to talk you through the application process and you can apply for any amount, no matter how small and for all ages, from Mums and Toddlers to Senior Citizens.Remember, it is your money, you only have to ask.We hope to hear from or see some of you soon.

MAKING A WILLThere are strong moral and financial reasons for making a Will. To die without leaving a Will leaves loved ones in an uncertain and stressful position. If you don’t have a valid Will the Law will decide who inherits and this is unlikely to be what you want for your partner or children. The survivor of an unmarried couple will be entitled to nothing and may lose the home where they lived.

Everyone believes making a Will is difficult. However with expert advice, counseling and guidance making a Will is not expensive, difficult, stressful or emotional and takes about an hour. If you have a Will it should be reviewed every 5 years.

The inner warmth and contentment felt by many of our clients who have planned ahead and tied up all their loose ends is without comparison. If you are over 18 whatever your circumstances it is sensible to make a Will. You should plan to pass on to your partner and/or children and/or others as much of your hard earned assets as you can. Don’t forget if your parents don’t have a valid up to date Will it’s your inheritance that is at stake. We can help you all.

We can also help the elderly, vulnerable and disabled by providing powers of attorney enabling them to appoint someone else to deal with their affairs if and when they can’t. Call Ashley at Simply Wills your local Professional Will Writer for information, advice and to make an appointment for your no obligation consultation. Visit us at www.simplywills.org.

MKBA ExtravaganzaI would like to thank the Parish Council on behalf of Milton Keynes Basketball Association (MKBA) for supporting our recent Sports Extravaganza at Shenley Brook End on the 22nd July 2012.This time, the day was all about allowing people to try out different sports which included Basketball, Football, Korfball, Parkour (Free Running), Dodgeball, Netball, Laser Tag ‘Special Ops’ and Rugby League. The day was enjoyed by over 2500 participants and supporters. As a result, we not only managed to raise vital funds to develop basketball within the community, but also gave the various sport clubs the opportunity to demonstrate their unique activity to a local audience. MKBA is run entirely by volunteers, so every penny of the funds raised goes towards basketball training and development for men, women and children of all ages in a safe environment. As part of our commitment to both basketball and the community, we also offer training for coaches and officials which allows for better opportunities to progress within sport.Every year we have more and more members joining the club from as young as 4, and have the only competing ladies basketball team in Milton Keynes. It is vital that we continue to work hard to make sure that not only classes are available, but affordable as well. This year, with the London Olympics, the spotlight is firmly on British athletes. Therefore it is even more important that we generate home grown talent from a young age. Your support allows us to continue our development plans and progress sport at a grass roots level within the Milton Keynes community. And just to add - your ongoing support is gratefully received and we look forward to working with you again in the future. With the warmest regards, Karl Nason

An Insight into The Parks Trust In September 2011, I was asked if I would put my name forward to join the Parks Trust on behalf of the Milton Keynes Association of Parish Councils. Following an interview with the Chief Executive I was invited to join the board to represent the Parish Councils.I have enjoyed my first year and am amazed at the amount of work going on that I did not know was happening in the fields of education and environmentEducation – The Education team work with around 5,000 school children per year mainly in primary schools and are continuously looking at ways to increase awareness and use of the woods and parks. There is a purpose-built education facility planned for Howe Park Wood and the programme of activities out of school is available on the website or in booklet form from the library and Parish Offices.Environment - Howe Park is woodland mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. Parts of it may be rare surviving fragments of the 'wildwood' that covered the whole of lowland Britain after the last Ice Age, 6-11,000 years ago. When Milton Keynes Development Corporation bought the wood in 1968 it was a dark, wet impenetrable thicket. The shady conditions prevented the growth of woodland flowers and therefore insects, birds and other wildlife which depend on them. Active management of the wood

has transformed that picture and these days Howe Park Wood is a tranquil oasis, humming with wildlife and colour. To restore the variety of wildlife habitats typical of traditionally managed woodlands, the paths, rides and glades have all been opened up. In some areas, trees were removed to allow others room to grow, and young oaks and ash were planted to provide large woodland trees for the future.A few facts that I did not know when I joined the board of Parks Trust:

• With over 100 lakes and ponds MK has more shoreline than Jersey!

• The Trust cares for 5,000 acres of parks and green spaces, including 80 miles of landscaped grid roads (except 4.5m next to the road where services run) and has 22,000 trees on its land.

• Areas such as Campbell Park, the Linear Parks, Howe Park Wood and Shenley Wood etc are all on 999 year leases from MKC.

• Lakes such as Willen, Calcecotte and Furzton which form part of the balancing pond and lake system are on 125 year leases from Anglia Water.

I look forward to serving the rest of my term of office making my contribution to the valuable work that the Milton Keynes Parks Trust does.

Gardening – September 2012Jubilee - In June’s article I promised pictures of my Jubilee pots and hanging baskets which I had planted this year copying those I had helped my father with in 1953 for the Queens Coronation. Despite the terrible weather they were quite successful and here are the

results. The white and blue are lobelia and the red in one patio pot and the hanging baskets are petunia. The patio pot has a red pelargonium, which I still insist on calling a geranium although the genus has changed since I

went to college.

Flying Ants - Each year I get invaded by flying ants. They get into my utility room in a different way each time but always manage to get in somehow. It only happens once each year and at the same time I get lots of birds in the garden. I saw in the newspaper that the Society of Biology were running a survey on flying ants so I applied to them to join this process and find out more about my invaders.Flying ants apparently only appear in large numbers once per year as part of their mating cycle usually in hot weather to perform their yearly mating ritual or ‘nuptial flight’. This attracts birds especially seagulls and on Monday 23rd July my flying ants arrived and we had a flock of seagulls swooping over the garden eager for a free feast. Although the ants we see scurrying along the ground during the year are sterile female workers, those seen airborne are males and new queens, mainly the common black garden ant, Lasius niger. Thousands of colonies synchronise their emergence, to make things more difficult for predators and to increase the chances of obtaining a mate from a different colony, to prevent inbreeding. After mating, the males waste away and die, but the queens, after shedding their wings, found new colonies, digging a chamber underground for the nest, and will lay eggs for the rest of their lives – which can be 15 years, without having to mate again. Some people consider flying ants a pest, but there is no need to kill them, as the males die of their own accord and thus represent a very short-lived problem, not least as the swarm takes place only once a year. The Society of Biology survey is hoping to learn more about the spectacle of flying ant day and is asking everyone who sees flying ants in 2012 to make a note of the time, date, location and weather conditions, and submit records through their online survey. www.surveymonkey.com/s/flyingantsurvey You may not remember exactly when they came into your garden or house but the expectation is that it will be July, August or early September when the weather is warm.

Weather - The weather this year has badly affected everything, from Jubilee celebrations and emergence of flying ants, to the flowers and vegetables in my garden. As an example the two photos show runner beans growing in my garden, one taken on the 20th July 2010

and one on 21st July 2012. As you can see, they were badly affected in 2012, not by the extreme wet which we

all complained about, but by the cold which vegetables in particular can’t cope with. If it had been wet and warm our gardens would have been like jungles, but the cold is a killer as seeds can not germinate and even perennials go into hibernation. The good thing is that as the weather

turned hot in the second half of July the vegetables recovered and we even had our first picking of French beans for Sunday lunch on the 5th August. It is amazing how plants soon catch up once the weather changes.I did loose a lot of strawberries which rotted in the cold and wet. We did however manage to have fruits to eat on our cereal for over a month and also make 15lbs of jam from those that survived. Looking forward to more ‘English’ weather enjoy your gardening

New Addition to the Office StaffMy name is Sharon Kerr and I have just started working as Finance and Administration Officer for the Shenley Brook End and Tattenhoe Parish Council. I am married with 2 children and live locally. In my spare time I enjoy walking and spending time with my family and friends. Last year I gained my AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification after studying part-time at Milton Keynes Collage. I have over 25 year’s experience of working in accounts and am looking forward to working with the team at the Parish Office.

Congratulations to Karen from our Youth TeamAll staff at the Parish Council would like to extend our congratulations to Karen Wheeler who got married at the beginning of June. Karen has played a very large part in the growth of the youth team and since joining us as a volunteer back in February 2009 she has really come out of her shell and has now proven herself to be an irreplaceable member of the team.We would like to wish Karen and Steve a wonderful life together and thank them both for allowing us to be a part of their big day.

Planning & Environment Committee ReportSince the last issue a number of planning applications relating to our area have been approved by Milton Keynes Council, notably the McMullen’s application for a pub/restaurant in Tattenhoe which was referred to in the Summer issue and which features on our front page. Also approved is the development by Linden Homes of the old Trevellyan Farm site in Westcroft. This has been a long time coming to fruition and as yet we have no information regarding a commencement date. On a more mundane level we have installed four additional dog waste bins around the Parish and have approval to install a number of grit bins before the onset of winter - probably guaranteeing a very mild winter!!At our last meeting the Committee approved a new Planning Procedure Document which sets out the Parish Council’s involvement in Milton Keynes Council’s planning process. It’s a Washout!

On Saturday 7th July the Parish Council organised a Community & Environment day at Tattenhoe Pavilion. Everything was in place for a great day except for the weather Unfortunately, due to a torrent of rain, the event was not the success we had hoped for and became more of a wash out. Activities on the day included arts and craft (painting, modelling, badge making, and origami), a word-search competition, play-dough, music making, balloon modelling, a range of sports, and a bouncy castle. Most of the activities were unaffected by the weather although the bouncy castle could not be inflated all day because the rain would not hold off long enough. We had a good selection of different agencies at the event including both of the Children’s Centres in the Parish, MKC Youth Service, The Tattenhoe Community Group, MKC Environment team, Hertsmere Leisure, The Parish Council, and Shenley Christian Fellowship. Each of these agencies provided an activity and was available to give information about their service. It is just unfortunate that the numbers we had expected to attend were not there to experience them.I would like to thank all of the agencies, volunteers, Parish Councillors and the Hertsmere Leisure staff at the Tattenhoe Pavilion for their support on the day and hopefully we will be blessed with more luck next time.

Local Optician’s Olympic ExperienceLondon 2012 volunteers were called 'Games Makers', as they were helping to make the Games happen. Up to 70,000 Games Makers took on a wide variety of roles across the venues: from welcoming visitors; to transporting athletes; to helping out behind the scenes in the Technology Team to make sure the results get displayed as quickly and accurately as possible. The vast majority gave up at least 10 days of their time to become involved.

Arif Master, owner of Clearsight Opticians at Westcroft, was thrilled when he learned in February that his application to be an Olympic Volunteer at the Wembley Arena had been accepted.

Over 250,000 people from all walks of life had applied and 70,000 were finally chosen after a stringent selection process. All the lucky ones then had to attend at least three training sessions to make sure they were thoroughly prepared for their roles.

A few weeks before the Games started the volunteers were all provided with the distinctive purple and red kit proudly displayed by Arif, seen here holding his certificate of thanks, which all volunteers received.

Arif explained that he was with the Event Services Team. "My duties included greeting spectators as they arrived, preparing them for security screening, providing directions and information and managing queues. It was fairly hectic but I did manage to catch some of the badminton action", he said.

"There were many highlights and it was a great honour to be part of the London 2012 Olympics. The Games signify everything that is good about bringing young people together to compete at the highest level. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I was determined to be involved in whatever way I could. The memories will remain with me for the rest of my life"

Lock up your ValuablesLocal police at Westcroft are warning that around 50% of car and garage crime in the area at present is down to unsecured cars and garages. Police Constable Siân Terrett, Neighbourhood Officer stresses that people should make sure that vehicles and garages are locked and secured and items of value are not on display. Don’t make it easy for the criminals!

Youth ActivitiesFun & Play sessions in the ParishOnce again the Parish Council has funded Milton Keynes Play Association providing Fun & Play sessions across four of our estates this summer. A total of 23 two and a half hour sessions have been available, providing a range of activities keeping the younger members of our Parish entertained during the long break from school, and all are totally free of charge.Providing for all young people aged between 4-14 years each session includes one of a range of inflatable’s and bouncy castles, arts and craft activities, many different sports, and a good number of skilled, helpful and fun staff to facilitate the fun and learning. We have been providing these fun & play sessions for many years now and they just keep getting more and more popular. I hope everybody enjoyed them if they have attended, and be sure to keep an eye out for the dates and times of our Easter sessions next April.

Morrison's Summer Play ParkTo celebrate the summer, Morrison's supermarkets have been touring the country with its M Savers Summer Play Parks - a series of fun and free events for the whole family to enjoy. Visiting Milton Keynes in August, setting up on the Westcroft playing fields, kids and grown-ups alike came to try out all sorts of fun activities from face painting to whacky games and free workshops where people got creative with potato stamps, tried butterfly painting or even made a kite! It was nice to see the benefits of having a major supermarket in the Parish.

Youth ClubsThe Parish Council offers a range of free sessions for young people aged 11-18 to engage them in positive activities and giving them the chance to meet with friends and staff to support the transition through adolescence and on the path to becoming a positive adult. Details of session activities and times are listed on page 6.If you would like any further information then please contact Andy Ridgway, Youth Team leader on 07970 902570, email [email protected] or visit our website www.shenleybrookend-pc.gov.uk
