To be held at the Centre for Per- forming and Visual Arts at 7 p.m., this year’s competition is themed “Pop Century,” where each of the 11 dancing teams will perform a routine based on a specific decade, from the Roaring Twenties into the future. The studios drew their team’s respective decade from a hat, and Higgins and Johnson drew “the future.” The benefit event will follow the chronology of the cen- tury, and Higgins says while “the future” was overwhelming at first, “because it hasn’t happened yet,” their routine being open to inter- pretation allows them to “close out the show with a bang.” “It’s going to be fun and differ- ent. I think people are going to really enjoy us, with our audience participation and our futuristic lighting and costumes,” said Hig- gins. “We took current hit songs and added our own touch to them, so there’s a lot of energy in our dance.” Higgins says she’s kept her team’s performance totally secret – not even her family knows what songs or routine she and Johnson, a hip-hop instructor, will perform to. The section of the Chat- tahoochee that can easily be accessed from Chatta- hoochee Bend State Park gets cleaned twice a year. But this time, volunteers will also tackle the sec- tion from the Ga. Hwy. 16 bridge to the “north plat- form” camping site at Chat- tahoochee Bend. There are also oppor- tunities for volunteers to clean up from the banks. Those wishing to partic- ipate must pre-register at www.sweepthehooch.org. There are plenty of oppor- tunities on other parts of the river, as well. There are a total of 38 participating sites for the cleanup, which is sponsored by Chat- tahoochee Riverkeeper, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, and Upper Chattahoochee Trout Unlimited. Chattahoochee Bend State Park has a limited number of canoes available for volunteers wishing to clean up the lower section of the river. Those must be reserved in advance, either by contacting the Chatta- hoochee Bend park office at 770-254-7271 or Friends of Chattahoochee Bend River Committee Chairman Greg Hyde at FriendsofChatta- [email protected]. Hyde said the upper river cleanup is only for expe- rienced paddlers. There are some rapids along that stretch, which passes McIntosh Reserve park, and a low dam at the Geor- gia Power intake can be troublesome. They are lim- iting the upper cleanup to 10 boats. So far, six people have signed up. Hyde said they are still working out the logistics, but the volunteers will likely drop off their trash at the north platform take- out but continue down to the boat ramp to get off the river. That makes the entire trip about 11 miles. The lower stretch of river is about 3.5 miles. There are about 20 slots left for the lower cleanup, as well as plenty of room for people who want to clean up from the bank. For more information, visit www.SweepThe- Hooch.org. You can find out more about the Friends of Chattahoochee Bend State Park at www.Bend- Friend.com. The annual Sweep the Hooch cleanup will be April 11. Recipe/Community Connection

breast cancer on April 14, 2008 – the same night as Coweta’s Dancing Stars.

Samantha Brazie, Com-munity Welcome House board chair and event or ga n i zer, says t hey began planning for the event in August 2014, and had all the teams come together between Octo-ber and December. By early January, the teams began practicing, l ike Cheney and Howard.

Cheney, like Higgins, had no prior experience, neither dancing nor per-forming on stage.

“Getting to know the other dancers has been a good experience; it takes the edge off it, under-standing we’re all in this together,” Cheney said. “Whenever we al l get together, it’s a good time.”

Cheney and Howard drew the ‘90s as their decade. He says he and his family spent a night beh i nd t he computer “watching probably 170 songs and videos” from that era, which included artists he and Howard will

be dancing to – Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and Spice Girls.

“My 2-year old daughter loved all the songs we lis-tened. I say, ‘She was born in the wrong decade,’” joked Cheney. “The ‘90s was a great decade. It had a little bit of everything, and that’s basically how me and Abigail [Howard] look at it. We want to give everybody a blast from the past.”

Neither Cheney nor Higgins say they’re ner-vous, but each admit-ted that might change as Coweta’s Dancing Stars draws less than a month away. Cheney feels confi-dent because he believes Howard is the perfect partner for her.

“Abiga i l i s a g reat dancer, and we have a good timing together. Every time we practice, she’s just right there, no matter the genre or need-ing to practice it first. She just goes,” Cheney said. “I’m not nervous just yet. We’re still focusing on get-ting everything situated.”

Higgins shares Cheney’s confidence, though she jokes April isn’t here yet.

“I’m very excited to give everyone a good show. I might be nervous that

night, but who wouldn’t,” Higgins said. “It’ll be a lot of fun and something for me to check off my bucket list. It’ll be something to make my family and chil-dren proud.”

Jack Perry spoke at the second-annual domes-tic violence vigi l out-side the historic Newnan courthouse in September. With the vigil becoming annual and last year being the most money Coweta’s Dancing Stars has raised yet, Brazie says she’s opti-mistic about the direction awareness for domestic violence is going.

“It’s fair to say aware-ness is increasing in this community. What’s great about raising the aware-ness is people are talking about domestic violence, and women are more com-fortable seeking help and getting in contact with Com munity Welcome House instead of thinking they’re all alone,” Brazie said.

“We are thrilled to have such an amazing group of community leaders step-ping up to make the eighth year of the show a huge success,” she added. “I believe it will be a record-breaking year.”

Bake 1 hour, basting occa-sionally with pan drippings. Remove foi l . Brush with remaining marmalade mix-ture. Bake 45 minutes longer. Serve ham with pan drippings.

Tip: Pair spices like gin-ger or chipotle with fruity jams and preserves to balance out saltiness of ham. Cherry Bourbon, Apricot Pineapple Chipotle or Lemon Ginger are easy flavor combinations your guests will love, and are all available on McCormick.com.

Easy Lemon Daisy CupcakesServings: 18

• 1 package (2-layer size) white cake mix• 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons McCormick Pure

Lemon Extract, divided• 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened• 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened• 2 tablespoons sour cream• 1 package (16 ounces) confectioners’ sugar• 10 drops McCormick Yellow Food Color• 18 large marshmallows• Decorating sugar• Jelly beans• Green sprinkles

Prepare cake mix as directed on package, adding 1 tablespoon of lemon extract. Spoon into 18 paper-lined muffin cups, filling each cup 2/3 full. Bake as directed for cupcakes. Cool cupcakes on wire rack.

For frosting, beat cream cheese, butter, sour cream and remaining 2 teaspoons lemon extract in large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in confection-ers’ sugar until smooth. Stir in food color until evenly tinted. Frost cooled cupcakes.

To decorate cupcakes , cut each marshmal-low crosswise into 5 slices. Sprinkle 1 side of each marshmallow slice with decorating sugar.
