Start the season of giving early this year with a free St. Martin’s Day celebration, Nov. 8 at 4 pm. St. Martin is celebrated in many cultures around the world for his kindness to a poor stranger he encountered while traveling on horseback. Landmark Center’s celebration is in the German tradition and celebrates this example of neighborliness with music and a lantern parade led by a reenactment of St. Martin’s encounter with the stranger. If you’re feeling inspired by the spirit of St. Martin bring a new or gently used donation for Joseph’s Coat, an organization that provides winter coats, clothes, and other essential items to those in need.

The 37th Annual Old Fashioned Holiday Bazaar is a great opportunity to find unique gifts for everyone on your holiday shopping list. From roasted nuts and salsa, to home décor and jewelry, the bazaar features gifts for every taste and style. The Old Fashioned Holiday Bazaar is open, 10 am – 7 pm on Dec. 3 and 4, and 10 am – 5 pm on Dec. 5. Admission is $5, and kids under 12 are free. In addition to the bazaar, finish your shopping on the Holiday Gift Stroll which includes Landmarket Gift Shop, Subtext Books, The Artist Mercantile, Sophist-A-Gifts, and more.

At Santa’s Workshop, Dec. 13, kids and parents alike can visit and get their picture taken with Santa! Also, say hello to his reindeer, make and take a gift for a loved one, and enjoy a performance by the Saint Paul Ballet. Santa’s Workshop begins at 1 pm, and is free.

Back for it’s 24th year, this holiday tradition brings the music of the season to Landmark Center. Bring the whole family to enjoy holiday favorites at the free Star of the North Band Holiday Concert on Dec. 16 at 7 pm.

St. Martin’s Day and Santa’s Workshop are part of Sundays at Landmark, and are supported in part by Ecolab and Travelers. For more information on holiday events at Landmark Center visit landmarkcenter.org.

Correction: In the September/October Columns, The Schubert Club Court-room Concerts were noted as Wednesday events, they are on Thursdays. We apologize for any confusion.

Red House Live from Landmark Center continues, Nov. 20, with The Cactus Blossoms. Brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum grew up in northeast Minneapolis and have been blending their voices as The Cactus Blossoms since 2010. Their hypnotic harmonies and unforgettable songs have made them favorites in the Twin Cities’ music scene. Their latest album, Live at the Turf Club, blurs the line between old and new as they sneak a few originals into their repertoire of early country and Western swing.

The final Red House Live from Landmark Center, Dec. 18, will be a special concert from Davina and the Vagabonds. Davina and the Vagabonds, fronted by Davina Sowers, have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows, A-level musicianship, sharp-dressed professionalism, and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Tom Waits, in 2011 DATV released their first full length, all original album Black Cloud. It was named one of the 10 best releases of the year by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and awarded 4 ½ stars from Downbeat Magazine. Their next release in 2014, Sunshine, hit number 13 in the Billboard Blues Chart. DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments, and tender gospel passages. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago.

All Red House Live from Landmark Center concerts are presented by Landmark Center and Red House Records. They are proudly sponsored by KFAI-FM Radio, Great Waters Brewing Company, and Wells Pianos. Tickets are going fast! To purchase yours or for more information visit landmarkcenter.org/redhouse.html.

Landmark to LowertownNov. 4; Musser Cortile; 12 pm; Free

Vocalist and songwriter Aby Wolf will collaborate with Joey Van Phillips to create a lunchtime music bistro in Landmark Center’s Musser Cortile. American Composers Forum is pleased to announce its second season of Landmark to Lowertown, a program featuring new music in downtown St. Paul. With Wolf’s soaring harmonies and Van Phillips’ laser tight hiphop rhythms, the two have expertly aided Dessa in becoming an internationally loved live music act. A rare opportunity to hear this combination of artists, Wolf and Van Phillips will present a new project that radiates their longtime creative kinship, focusing on dynamic percussion and strong vocal work.

Landmark to Lowertown captures an audience that might not typically be familiar with all of the stimulating art that St. Paul has to offer. This installment is supported in part by Landmark Center. In starting a new tradition, this season’s composer/performers are awardees of the Minnesota Emerging Composer Award (MECA) from ACF and generously funded by the Jerome Foundation, an award that highlights artists in Jazz/Improvisation, Electronic, and World music. For more information visit composersforum.org. Aby Wolf
