Today’s complex health challenges are reshaping the landscape of public health. They require new ways of thinking and new ways of working.
Interdisciplinary. Collaborative. Innovative.
These essential qualities are at the heart of a breakthrough MPH program that builds on a long tradition of academic excellence at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
The Columbia MPH is taught by a world-class faculty and uses the vibrant context of New York City as a resource. It will launch your career to develop solutions for a healthier world.
Solutions start here.
Engage. In the U.S. and around the world, chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes and heart disease are on the rise.So are threats to clean water and the environment. Urbanization, climate change and a rapid increase in elderly populations pose unprecedented challenges around the globe. At the same time, inefficiencies in our healthcare systems and troubling disparities in health and access to care demand fresh, comprehensive solutions.
the Columbia MPH is an education designed to meet the challenges
of the unfolding 21st century. It offers a rich academic framework for future leaders of public health.
The innovative structure of the MPH program provides the essential knowledge, tools and critical thinking skills needed to tackle the public health problems of today as well as emerging and unanticipated obstacles that lie ahead.
The two-year MPH program includes:

what factors underlie the patterns of disease and premature death in the U.S. and around the globe? What role is played by environmental factors? What accounts for health disparities between demographic groups within nations and across the world? What values come into play in designing interventions to prevent illness or systems to promote health?
The first semester Core challenges you to think critically about overarching questions like these as you explore political, socioeconomic, biological
and environmental influences on public health and consider the
historic and ethical foundations of the field. The Core also introduces quantitative and qualitative methodologies essential for research.
As you move through the 18 modules of the Core, you will learn from many of the School’s most gifted professors who bring frontline experience and knowledge to every class. The School puts a strong emphasis on teaching and mentorship.
Your peers are also an essential part of your educational experience. Students get to know a cohort of diverse classmates through the small group discussions, labs and teamwork.
Explore.In-depth study begins in the second semester in one of five disciplines. No matter which discipline you choose, you will work with experts whose research and projects are expanding the boundaries of knowledge in the laboratory and in the field.
Disciplines:
•environmental Health Sciences
•epidemiology
•Health Policy*
•Population & family Health
•Sociomedical Sciences
In your third semester you will develop an additional area of expertise through your Certificate program. Most of these programs focus on interdisciplinary topics such as Global Health, Social Determinants of Health and Health Promotion Research and Practice. Others, such as Health Policy Analysis or Infectious Disease Epidemiology, provide deeper training within a discipline.

The Columbia MPH incorporates case study analysis, one of the most enriching teaching methodologies in graduate education.
You will learn how to integrate the theory and science of public health with real-world practice through case studies drawn from history and current events. For example, students will scrutinize recent decisions by California policymakers and prison officials to release elderly and ill inmates as a way of saving the state money. Working in small
groups, students analyze competing
concerns such as budget, ethics, health
and public safety. Case studies will sharpen your analytic and problem solving skills.
The hands-on practicum experience also integrates theory with practice. You can draw on Columbia’s network of contacts in New York City, across the country and around the world to plan a practicum that will provide valuable work experience.
The curriculum includes a program
in leadership and innovation
that is unique among schools of
public health.
Most public health work occurs within interdisciplinary teams. And yet, teamwork and leadership skills have not been a required part of public health education.
Integrated into the second semester, coursework and hands-on workshops
will foster your ability to work
effectively with diverse professionals
in a wide range of settings —hospitals, research centers, public health organizations, NGOs or wherever your career leads you.
This training will strengthen your capacity to implement public health strategies that depend on negotiation, cooperation and collaboration to succeed.
