Hello all of Columbia,

This year’s Columbia Association’s Cigar Event at Club Macanudo was a huge success. A great time was had by all that attended. A special thanks to Michael Herklots of Davidoff of Geneva, for all of the quality cigars he donated. Michael was one of our Columbia Association Annual

Dinner Dance Honorees last year. I would like to thank the entire Columbia Association Board Of Officers that assisted in making this event a huge success. I would like to give a special thanks to the Cigar Event Committee Chairmen, Richard Angeletti and R.J. Coleman. The Columbia Association would like to express its gratitude to all of the members that partook in this event and the all of the Fraternal and Union groups that supported our event and made it a huge success.

Spring is right around the corner. It is the time of year for happy events. Take the time out to enjoy family and friends during this time of the year. The Columbia Association would like to wish all of their members a Happy Easter.

On Thursday April 28, 2011 at 11:00, there will be a memorial mass paying homage to the great Italian-American Crime fighter NYPD Detective Lieutenant Joseph Petrosino at Our Lady of Guadalupe R.C. Church located at 7201 15th Avenue Brooklyn. Refreshments will be served following the mass. Show your support for those who performed the ultimate sacrifice.

On Sunday May 1, 2011 at 1:00 at the 113th Precinct there will be a street renaming ceremony. The street will be renamed from Baisley Boulevard to Police Officer John Scarangella Boulevard. Please attend this monumental event. Show your support for those who performed the ultimate sacrifice.

On Friday May 6, 2011 we will have our annual 2011 Golf Classic at the Clearview Golf course located at 202-12 Willets Point Boulevard Bayside Queens. Check in is at 7:00 A.M. There will be a continental breakfast. This year we will have food and open bar at the prestigious Valentino’s Restaurant which is conveniently located right next door to the golf course. The cost of this event is only $175.00.

On Friday May 13, 2011 at 6:30 the Columbia Association will hold its 79th Annual Awards Dinner at the El Caribe Country Club located at 5945 Strickland Avenue in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. Receiving the Lieutenant Joseph Petrosino “Man of the Year” award is Assistant Chief Thomas Galati. Receiving the Columbia Association Humanitarian award is our very own attorney, Stuart Salles. Receiving our Italian-American achievement award is the talented actress Jennifer Esposito. Receiving the Lieutenant Mario Biaggi award for valor is Police Officer Robert Salerno. Receiving the Police Officer Michael Melchiona award for valor is Detective Michael Sileo. Receiving the Police Officer Arthur Pelo award for valor is Police Officer Michael Gerbasi.

Congratulations to all our award recipients.

On my closing note, let us push for memberships. If you have not paid your dues for 2011 please see your delegate or any board officer and support your organization. I just want to say that I received many kudos from members for bring-ing the newsletter online. The compliments go above and beyond. Again I want to thank everyone that helped out in bring-ing the newsletter into the 21st century. I hope all is

well this month. This editorial will be a bit different. I'm going to touch on several top-ics. First, remember that this April 14th marks the death of Police Officer Phillip Car-dillo. He was executed in a Harlem Mosque in 1972. God bless Phil. Please watch over your brothers and sisters during their tour of duty. Secondly, Memorial Day is next month. During this holiday, I encourage all to take a moment and think about the sacrifices that our men and women in our military make to keep our home front safe. If you get a chance, take a trip to D.C. and walk around our capital and tap into tons of history. Last-ly, I want to extend a personal thank you to each and everyone on the board for the hours they dedicated to running an event. This in-cludes the hours put in behind the scene, the phone calls made, the running around, the time that should be spent with your family—just so that the function will be perfect. THANK YOU!

Recently I went to a memorial mass for two police officers that were killed in LOD in the 79Pct. in 1978. The officers were Norman Cerullo & Chris Masone. The mass was held at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston Queens. The attend-ance by the retired P.O.'s was out-standing after all these years. There

were more retirees than active P.O.'s. Like our Life members these fellow retirees had dedication to their fellow P.O.'s and their com-mand. We would like to thank life members Donald Glaudino, Al-fred Murphy, Alfred Marino for their donations to the scholarship fund.

Since 1986 the Columbia Association of the NYPD has published a journal in conjunction with our annual dinner dance. The proceeds from the journal and the dinner dance allow us to provide our members with many activities and benefits; the most important of these being the scholarship fund.

This year’s line-up of award recipients is a tremendous one. The Co-lumbia Association’s Lt. Joseph Petrosino Man of the Year is Assistant Chief Thomas Galati. Chief Galati is currently the Commanding Officer of the In-telligence Division. The recipient of our Humanitarian award is Stuart Sal-les. Stu has provided legal counsel to this organization for many years and has always been there for us. Our Italian Heritage award goes to actress Jen-nifer Esposito who currently stars in the TV drama “Blue Bloods”.

We will also be honoring the commitment and bravery of three mem-bers of our organization with awards for valor. The Mario Biaggi award will be presented to P.O. Robert Salerno of the 47 PDU, the Michael Melchionna award will be presented to Detective Michael Sileo of the Aviation Unit and the Arthur Pelo award will be presented to P.O. Michael Gerbasi of Highway Unit #1.

This year’s Dinner Dance will be held on May 13, 2011, at the El Car-ibe Country Club in Brooklyn, New York. Tickets are $100.00 per person. Eating Nuts Daily Lowers Cholesterol

Daily Helping of Nuts May Help Fight Heart Disease,

New Study Finds

May 10, 2010 -- Eating nuts on a daily basis improves blood cho-

lesterol levels and reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, a

new study says.

Joan Sabaté, MD, Dr PH, and colleagues from Loma Linda Univer-

sity in California, pooled data from 25 studies on nut consumption

in seven countries, looking at 583 men and women with various

cholesterol levels. None was on cholesterol-lowering medications.

Nuts evaluated included almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios,

walnuts, macadamia nuts, and peanuts.

Patients in the trials ate an average of 67 grams, or about 2.4

ounces, of nuts daily.

This dietary practice resulted in an average 5.1% reduction in total

cholesterol concentration, a 7.4% reduction in LDL or bad choles-

terol, and an 8.3% reduction in the ratio of LDL to HDL (“good”

cholesterol) levels.

In addition, triglyceride measurements declined by 10.2%, but only

among people with initially elevated triglyceride readings. The

cholesterol effects of nut consumption were similar in men and

women, and were dose related.

Different types of nuts had similar effects on blood cholesterol

levels, according to the authors. However, “effects of nut consump-

tion were significantly modified by LDL, body mass index, and diet

type: the lipid-lowering effects of nut consumption were greatest

among subjects with high baseline LDL and with low body mass

index and among those consuming Western diets.”

The findings support the inclusion of nuts in therapeutic dietary

interventions for improving cholesterol levels, the authors say.

“Increasing consumption of nuts as part of an otherwise prudent

diet can be expected to favorably affect blood lipid levels (at least

in the short term), and have the potential to lower coronary heart

disease risk,” the authors write.

Nevertheless, moderation is key although eating nuts on a regular

basis appears to have significant health benefits, nut consumption

should be limited to no more than 3 ounces per day because of

their high calorie density.

Sabaté and fellow author Emilio Ros, MD, PhD, disclose receiving

research funding from the California Walnut Commission, the Al-

mond Board of California, the National Peanut Board, and the

International Tree Nut Council. Sabaté has also received an hono-

rarium as a member of the Pistachio Scientific Advisory Board.

The study is published in the May 10 issue of Archives of Internal

Medicine.

5 Steps to a Healthier Life

We are all aware life in Law Enforcement is stressful, now more than ever, as is life in New York. Many resources are available to you through your department Police Surgeons, Honorary Police Surgeons or personal Physicians. Take advantage of them. Consid-er these steps towards a healthier life.

1.) Be Tobacco Smoke Free

Smoking puts you at increased risk for heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Quitting greatly decreases your risk of these conditions.

Even second-hand smoke can put you, as well as, your family at risk. Children whose parents smoke are twice as likely to smoke. In children exposed to second-hand smoke, they are at increased risk of developing ear infec-tions, asthma, and bronchitis.

2.) Keep Your Heart Healthy

Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked. Your work is stressful enough but if your blood pressure and/or cholesterol are elevated, you have an increased risk of heart disease. Know your numbers and follow-up with your physician to keep them in a normal range.

3.) Screen for Early Cancer Detection and Prevention

A colonoscopy is recommended for people age 50 and over, or, those with a family history should start sooner. It is normally needed only once every 10 years.

Avoid excessive sun exposure and use sunscreen. Have skin lesions and moles checked by a physician. Skin cancers of the melanoma type can be deadly if left un-treated.

Cervical cancers are prevented and screened for with Pap Smears. Screening is done every 3 years starting at age 21 (or within 3 years of beginning sexual activity).

Prostatic Specific Antigen or PSA is a simple blood test that is done as a screen for prostate cancer which should start at age 40.

For all these conditions, the earlier the detection, the better the outcome, including complete cure.

4.) Healthy Eating and Physical Activity as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Eat less fat, salt and sugar. Eat more fruits and vegeta-bles. Make healthier choices, avoid empty calories like soda or sweetened beverages and drink water instead.

Regular exercise, even walking for at least 30 minutes per day for 5 days a week has been shown to contribute to overall good health.

5.) Reduce Risky Alcohol Use/Recognize Depression

Heavy drinking or drinking that worries your co-workers or family is a problem. Using alcohol can also trigger depression or make it worse. It is normal to feel down once in a while, but if it persists, this may be a sign of depression. Help is available and it is available confi-dentially! I know this might be a week late for your Easter tables but it’s so much of a

favorite desert of mine, that I want you to try it for next year.

EASTER PIE

Ingredients

3/4 cup powdered sugar, plus extra for garnish

3 large eggs

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 tablespoon orange zest

1 (15-ounce) container whole milk ricotta cheese

1/2 cup cooked short-grained rice

1/3 cup toasted pine nuts

6 sheets fresh phyllo sheets or frozen, thawed

3/4 stick (3 ounces) unsalted butter, melted

Directions

Blend 3/4 cup of powdered sugar, eggs, va-nilla, orange zest and ricotta in a food proces-sor until smooth. Stir in the rice and pine nuts. Set the ricotta mixture aside.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Lightly butter a 9-inch glass pie dish. Lay 1 phyllo sheet over the bottom and up the sides of the dish, allowing the phyllo to hang over the sides. Brush the phyllo with the melted butter. Top with a second sheet of phyllo dough, laying it in the opposite direction as the first phyllo sheet. Continue layering the remaining sheets of phyllo sheets, alternating after each layer and buttering each sheet. Spoon the ricotta mixture into the dish. Fold the overhanging phyllo dough over the top of the filling to enclose it completely. Brush completely with melted butter.

Bake the pie until the phyllo is golden brown and the filling is set, about 35 minutes. Trans-fer the pan to a rack and cool completely. Sift powdered sugar over the pie and serve.

South-Fin-Grill nestled right on 300 Father Copodanno Blvd. in Staten Island. My wife and I had the pleasure of having dinner there with some relatives several weeks back and the only thing I can say is “Wow!” I was very impressed with everything from the service to the food; especially “The Mansion” and I don't mean Gracie Mansion! I mean a meal fit for a king—a 1 lb. lobster, 5 jumbo shrimp, 8 oysters, 3 little neck clams, 3 top necks and 3 Jonah crab claws topped with ceviche! I need not say more but you can imagine I brought a doggie bag home that night! There was no way a skinny guy like me was going to put away that amount of food! Let me read off parts of the menu: “ The Palace” 2-1 Lb lobsters, 8 jumbo shrimps, 16 oysters, 4 little necks, 4 top necks, 6 Jonah crab claws, with ceviche; delicious sushi; cold plates and salads; even a 24 oz. Porterhouse steak with buttermilk whipped potatoes—mouthwatering!
