Colour has everything
to do with the way your eye processes the action
of light.
Our eye generally processes the
spectrum of light that we see in a rainbow.
Many animals do not see in colour...
•Cats, dogs & mice have very low colour perception.
•Monkeys, birds & squirrels have good colour perception.
• Bees & butterflies have expections colour perception
Think in terms of the
way they look
and what they HAVE to see.
And if you think colour
doesn’t matter to
us....try not caring what you wear, the colour of your room or imagining that everyone’s eyes were
grey.

Primary Colours
these are the three parents of every other
colour: red, blue & yellow
Secondary Colours
are the first generation children of yellow, blue & red. When you mix two
primary colours you get a secondary.
Tertiary colours arethe result of mixing a
primary and secondary colour. For example:
yellow & orange make a yellowish-orange.
Complimentary colours
are colours opposite each other on the colour wheel.
Complimentary colours are like a good couple,
they bring out the best in each other.
Hueis the thing that makes
something appear to be a colour.
Tintis the amount of white in
a colour.
Shade is the amount of black in a
colour.
Colour intensity
is the strength of a colour.
Warm colours
are those that evoke a heat or ‘warmth’. Think fire, sun and any colour that has a good amount of yellow.
Warm colours appear close.
Cool coloursevoke a cool feeling. Think ice, water and
colours that have a good amount of blue.
Cool colours recede.

1. Create a ‘Colour’ intro page in your
sketchbook.
2. Choose a 6 x 6 inch colour photo.
3. Cut it into 6 inch strips.
4. Glue 3 onto a page in your sketchbook.
5. Mix and blend colour pencils to draw in the missing
strips.
