Caldera Profiling

This chapter provides a description of Caldera profiles as well as general procedures to set

profiles globally and on an individual image basis.

Color Management

The Caldera Graphics color management system is based on the ICC technology, which is anopen color management technology resting on internationally accepted color standards, andsupports a variety of workflows in digital color reproduction.

The principle is to obtain an automatic correction. Therefore, when you scan and then print,you receive the desired output without further tuning.

What is a Profile

An ICC profile is a file that contains all color information concerning a specific peripheral (i.e.,monitor, scanner, or printer with certain ink, media, resolution, etc.).

For example, when an operator designs an image using PhotoShop, a PhotoShop profile isautomatically generated. If you import a TIFF file which has been saved under PhotoShopdirectly from Caldera Graphics software, you will see the ICC profile attached to that file.

This is also true, when the operator imports a PhotoShop image into QuarkXpress. The colorinformation is also transferred with the image. The image is then converted into a PostScript(PS) file. If you import that PS file into our software, the colors will appear correctly on thescreen and the printed output.

When an operator scans an image using Caldera Graphics software, the scanner profile isattached to the image.

NOTE:In the following pages, profile, space and colorimetric space are equivalent.

How does it work?

Each document is attached to an ICC profile. This profile defines the space in which eachimage component is created. Additionally, each output peripheral (monitor or printer) also hasan ICC profile. The Caldera ICC engine converts the colors between these different spaces.

Caldera can define three types of documents: scanned or imported raster files, vector files (PS,

EPS, PDF, HPGl or TIFF/ IT), and composite documents.

You can choose whether you want to apply the same profile to the images and vectorscontained in the same document, or to apply a different profile to each of them.

Scanned or imported raster files

The simplest situation is for scanned or imported raster files (Figure 2.3). There is only oneprofile attached to the file, and this profile is automatically generated.

To see the color space information, among other information, click the FileManagerapplication icon and then select the desired file name.

Different options about the color profiles are now available in the Setupwindow of theFileManagermodule.

You can first choose to force a profile for the selected image:

Caldera Profiling

In the scan options, it is only in very special cases that you will have to use theApply ICCCalibration option. If you decide to use it, the image content will be converted into the

monitor color space. On the contrary, if you chooseTag only, it is the scanner profile that willbe attached to the image.

To haveCameleouse the default profile, clickAutomatic. To modify the scanner profile, clickthe right-mouse button over the application area and select the Server Admin tool.

PS/HPGL/PDF/TIFF-IT documents

For vector files (PS/ PDF/HPGL/HPRTL), it is more complex. These files may contain twotypes of objects: images or vectors (drawings, texts, etc), that can be defined in gray levels,RGB or CMYK. That is why we can attach six different profiles to such files.

NOTE:Only RGB profiles can be applied to HPGL files, and a TIFF-IT file can only receivea CMYK profile.

These six spaces are defined in the setup panel of theFileManagersoftware (Figure 2.8).

To select profiles, use theFileManagerSetupwindow (see Figure 2.8).

The options defined inFileManagercan still be modified during the printing setup (seePrintmodule).

TheUse EPS Photoshops embedded profilesoption allows to import the embedded EPSprofile(s).Please notice that this option is deactivated by default, as searching for the profilescan be a very slow process on large files.

Composite documents

Composite files composed within CalderasComposeapplication (see Figure 4.1) work nearlythe same as PostScript files.

There are two more levels of complexity in a composite file:

Each raster image can have its own profile. Each image within the composite can be a vector image (PS/PDF) with its

own profiles (CMYK, RGB, Grey). All vectors and text, as well as non-profiledraster images, use Calderas default profiles (Figure 2.11).

Default profiles

Default profiles are used every time the user has not specified profiles to apply.

Default profiles are to be defined within theUser Configurationwindow (right button menu inCalderas window). Click theICC tab.

You can now specify your favorite profiles in theDefault profiles

part of the window. Thesefavorites will be easy to find when you decide to change a profile inFilemanagersSetup.

To add a profile to your favorites, clickAddand select the wished profil. To delete a profilefrom the list, select it in the favorites list, and clickRemove.

Default Values after the first installation are:

Default CMYK profile is: CalderaCMYK.icc

Default RGB Profile is: sRGB.icc

Default GREY level profile is: CalderaGREY.icc

Default screen profile is: Trinitron_6500K_1.5.icc

When will the default profiles be applied?

Raster files- If the raster file does not have any embedded profile, the defaultprofile will be attached.

Composite documents- All vectors and texts will use the defaults spaces.

Default screen:The profile of your screen is only used for the display of the image on the screen.

NOTE:When your system was set up, the installer configured the best profile he/ she foundin the Caldera profiles database. (For more information, refer to theCaldera Graphics SoftwareInstallation Manual).

Color management options

For each color space type (Greyscale, RGB, CMYK), several kinds of color management areavailable in theColor Man.drop-down menu, and this in the first four tabs ofFileManagers Setup.

Most of the time, you will have to choose whether you want to apply anICCprofile (chosenamongst the available profiles) or no profile at all (No profile).

However, two other options are also available in this menu: Like RGB:If this mode is selected, the image will then be processed as a RGB image. Like CMJN: If this mode is selected, the image will then be processed as a

CMYK image.

At the bottom of theImagesandVectorstabs, six buttons allow you to perform the following actions:

No ICC:Deactivates the color management on all entities.Perceptual:Activates the ICC calibration on all entities, inPerceptualmode.Colorimetric:Activates the ICC calibration on all entities, inColorimetricmode.Load:Allows to load settings (saved as.cmofiles)Save:Allows to save your settings.Reset:Resets the tabs contents to its default values.

Rendering:

Caldera offers four rendering options, which are explained within the ICC specifications:

Absolute Saturation Perceptual Relative

In FileManager, you can apply the same rendering options for the input and the output, orchoose different options for each. For instance, selecting thePerceptual option will apply aPerceptual rendering both on the input and output, whereas selecting Perceptual-

Colorimetricwill apply a perceptual rendering on the input, and a colorimetric rendering onthe output.

The following are suggested settings for various types of output:

NOTE: If you decide to choose an Absolute rendering, you will then have access to theWhite pointoption in theSpecialpart of the tab. This option allows you to define whether thewhite of the input profile will be simulated on the white of the output profile.

For 60% cyan on some papers, Caldera Graphics software calculates 72%C, 25%M, 5%Y and0%K. The goal is to obtain the same color as the one shown on the calibrated screen (refer toFigure 2.12).

Edit the color space information

Caldera Graphics provides acomprehensive color manage-ment tool:ICColor. This tool istypically used to replace lostprofile information.

NOTE:This tool can mani-pulate basic raster images,imported raster format, orscanned images only.

For example, if you receive a.jpeg file with missing informa-tion, the Caldera Graphicssofware automatically applies adefault value (Figure 3.3).However, if you know in which

space the image was created,you can enter the actual (versesdefault) information.

Color management in the Print module

For all color management matters, thePrintmodule now refers to theFileManagermodule: theoptions defined in the latter (for images and vectors) will be considered before all others.However, you can still change them in thePrintmodule, before launching the printing.

When you open theColorswindow for the printer into which you want to send your image, theavailable options are almost identical to the ones in theFileManager; here, you will have thechoice to select other profiles if needed.

The six buttons at the bottom have the same purpose as the ones in theFileManager Setup(seechapter 2):

Color booster :

This series of options allows you to boost the output colors on the printing. None, L ight....correspond to the selected color enhancement level (ranging from 1 to 5).

ICC Computation

The optimization of the algorithms used to compute color conversion (profiles application).

Slow (very good quality):Slow computing, excellent quality. Fast (good quality):Faster computing, satisfying quality. Very fast (draft quality):Very fast computing, lower quality.

Gamma correction:

Use this option to apply gamma correction on your print.

The Auto button

This button is automatically activated for all profiles and rendering modes options, for theyhave already been defined during the rasterization process inFileManager.

If you force a profile (for instance, by replacing thesRGB.iccprofile, defined inFileManager, byanother profile), theAutobutton corresponding to this profile will be unchecked, indicatingthat this profile has been forced.

However, be aware that if you then throw another image in thePrintmodule, this very profilewill remain forced. You will have to directly click theAutobutton to apply the profile definedinFileManagerto this image.

ClickReset, at the bottom of the window, to reset all profiles in Auto mode.

Output profile

The output profile is based on the printer mode, the media type, etc.

TheAutomaticmode takes in charge all the needed parameters, and applies the profile that hasbeen predefined by Caldera Graphics engineers.

TheForce tomode allows you to select yourself a profile.

NOTE:If you apply (force) a specific profile, do not forget to go back to theAutomaticmode afterwards.

Simulation profile

You can simulate a media for another media, with one condition: the destination gamut mustbe larger than the simulated one.

Use the ICColor module to compare media gamuts.

Calibration settings

TheCalibration Settingsbutton changes all parameters on all of the tabs of this window.Only use this for printing a target to generate a new profile. (Refer toA ppendix B.)

In regular use circumstances, you can use theResetbutton.

Color curves

! WARNING: Caldera Graphics does not support displeasing affects from color curveadjustments. Only experts in color management should modify these parameters.

Linearization curves

NOTE:Caldera Graphics provides a linearization curve that has been specifically developedfor each type of media.

The main purpose of color curves is to control ink maximization; however, color curves alsoperform post-linearization tasks. After ICC calibration, you can use theCurvesoption to adjustthe color curves. Be aware that some media do not support 100 percent of each ink; therefore,the total ink must be limited. Figure 8.5 illustrates this fact. Use theMax Ink% option to set thetotal ink quantity that the media can support.

Correction curves

Since the 4.10 release of our software, you can also define correction curves by taking measureswith a densitometer. To do so, toggle theEnableoption, in theCorrection Curvesarea of theOutputtab.

Light/Dark ink separation

When the printer uses 6 inks, you can access the parameters for each of the 6 inks.

Replace CMY Black by K Black

This option is useful for HPGL files. As previously stated, in HPGL files, colors are describedin RGB (even if the user interface is specified as CMYK). These files must be printed withoutICC color calibration. So, in this case, the black color is a CMY black. To transform it to Kblack, use this option.

If some files containing CMY black are badly separated, this option should repair that.

NOTE:If the document creator wants to use the CMY black, do not check this option.

Miscellaneous color settings

TheMiscellaneoustab provides a number of miscellaneous options related to color correction,this including:

Local transfer:

This option is used to enhance RIP performance. If the server and client are on the same

computer, there will not be any copy to a spooler. Keep in mind that if youre printing a file from:

A CD- your original file on the CD must be in the CD drive until the end of the printing. The hard drive- your original file must not be deleted until the end of the printing.

Interpolation:

Caldera provides two types of interpolations:

Bilinear- more adapted for photographs

Nearest Neighbour - provides sharper results for scan-to-print maps andtechnical papers with text.

Print type

All planes- Document printed in normal quadrichromy Separated planes- Document printed with separation of planes (Cyan, Magenta,

Yellow, Black).

Screening:

Caldera provides three screening options:

Stochastic:best for images with gradients. Advancederrordiffusion:moreadaptedtosharpbordersonmaps, technical,

line prints. Rosettes (PostScript only)

Rosettes (only for PostScript)

Screen type:Choose here the dots shape:Circle,Ellipse,LinearorCross.

You can set the screening angle for each printer ink. If you select rosettes, every image otherthan a PostScript one will be processed with a stochastic screening.

NOTE:Do not forget to always keep a 30 difference between the angles, and to never givethe same angle to two inks or more! This would create a moir.

Tips and Tricks

PhotoShop's default color space on Macintosh

In theory, when you work on a monitor, it is better to work on the color space of that monitor.

Scan settings

Particularly for scan or print, you can save the setting files individually (stored in/ home/ caldera/.cas/ CONFIGS/ *.le32) and restore them if you believe there is a problem. This procedure canalso be performed for all modules at one time using the SAVE/RESTORE functions. Fordetails, please refer to theInstallation Guide.

Duplicating scan or print icons

Users can specify multiple scan and print icons to be displayed within the Application menu.This allows the user to predefine a specific print or scan setting for multiple solutions. Use theUser Configurationmenu accessed by right-clicking theA pplication menubar. Select a scan or print

application and clickDuplicate.

Overview

If you suspect that your software is not working properly, or f you are experiencing poor qualityoutput and are not sure about how to correct the problem, follow the procedures in thischapter to isolate the cause; then follow the suggestions to correct the problem.

Preliminary color troubleshooting tasks

If you are having difficulty with color or color matching, it is recommended that you check thefollowing before contacting technical support:

Ensure that the selected media in Caldera is the EXACT media that is in yourprinter. I f there is not any selection available in Caldera for your media, pleasecontact Caldera Graphics support at +33 (0)3 88 21 00 00 to see if we have aprofile for that specific media.

Check your input profile selection to ensure that you are not applying a RGBinput profile to a CMYK image or vice versa.

Ensure that the linearization for your printer is current.

If none of the above suggestions resolve the problem, please contact Caldera Graphicssupport at +33 (0)3 88 21 00 00. Please have the following information available:

The type of printer being used.

Is the printer direct or queued?

Did you profile this media or are you using the product default profiles?

The Ink Configuration for the selected media.

The selected media, dot pattern, and resolution.

Name of Input profiles used.

Caldera version.

Troubleshooting

Common imaging problems

The following are potential imaging problems that can occur along with suggested solutionswhen printing from Caldera.

Symptom Potential problem Suggested solution

Scanned images nolonger match theapplied profile.

A parameter on thescanner is incorrect anddoesnt match thespecified profile.

Option 1:If you save your parameters file(as described inTips and Tricksor inHow toobtain a scanner profi le), you can restore it.Quit the scan module, restore the file(copy it back to its original name), andthen re-launch the scan module.

Option 2:If you cannot go back to thedefault parameters by quitting themodule, remove the parameters file andre-launch the module.

Option 3:Use the global restore userparameters procedure (InstallationWorkstation document), but be aware that it

restores everything (Hotfolder, Workflow,and all the other modules parameters).

A parameter for themonitor is incorrect. Inthis case, the images(imported .tiff) arealso unacceptable onthe monitor.

Check the default profile for yourmonitor. Determine if this profile is theone installed with your CalderaGraphics software. If you dont know,select Trinitron.icc.

Scanner problem:

1. Poor internalcalibration

Recalibrate the scanner.Refer to the scanners documentation,or [email protected]. Supplythe exact scanner model and your accessnumber.

2. The scanners lightshave shifted

Redo the ICC profile. (Refer toAppendix A ).

Appendix A describes the procedures to scan the scanners profiling target as well as theinstructions to install the profile.

Scanning a target for a new scanner profile

If you have a new scanner (or if your scanner lamp color has shifted), you can request a new profile.

To scan the CalderaScanV1_00 target:

Reset on the setup panel before the scan for having all default parameters.1.Place the target (provided by Caldera Graphics) on the scanners glass.2.Scanat 100 dpi without any special settings.3.Save that file as a .tiff file without compression.

4.Send the file, along with your access number, [email protected].

NOTE:To display your access number, right-click theCameleo application barand then selectAbout Cameleo.

5.The Caldera staff will generate your profile, and then send it to you along withthe installation. The following section also describes the installation procedures.

NOTE:Be aware that all settings used during scan time must also be used whenthe profile is generated. Additionally, in Scanner > Setup, ensure that ICC Apply isNOT selected.

6.Quit theScanmodule (entered before Step 2).

7.Save the modules parameters file. (The directory is/ home/ caldera/ .cas/ CONFIGS/ *.le32)You might need to refer to it later.

The purchase of a Caldera Graphics product allows you to acquire a certain number of profilesfrom us. The number depends on the product key purchased and the maintenance contracted.If you are unsure, contact your product dealer.

Appendix B describes the procedures to print the media profiling target as well as theinstructions to install the new profile.

Printing an ECI2002 target

To print an ECI2002 target for profiling:

1. Use theECI2002.tiffile provided on the Caldera CD. The path to this file is:/ IMAGES/ COLORREFERENCES/ PRIN TERS/ ECI2002.tif. You can also use aversion with curves (one or two curves) on Cameleo 3.62 versions or older which do notsupport curves. Avoid 70% or 80% curves.

2. Check, step-by-step, all the settings before printing the target:

a. Select the Printer Settings button (3rd button). These settings arespecific to the printer: options that generally do not affect the colors(auto-cut, compression, etc). For the number of passes and theunidirectional/ bidirectional option, select the settings you will use mostoften. If you are unsure, selectAutomatic.

b. For theQualityoption, select the best available quality.

c.Select theCalibration settingsbutton in the colors setup window.

d.Generally, you will use pre-defined curves (Automatic). If you createpersonalized curves, do not forget to save this curve and to give adescriptive name to the file, e.g.,Colorgrafx_720dpi_CMYKcm_Indoor170g.ppc.Without this curve, you will not be able to use the ICC profile.

In the main window:

Select the printing resolution. The profile can be used with this resolu-tion only. In the available media list, select the media that is the most like yours. Select a Generic media (a supported media for your printer) and not

a personalized media. (One solution is to create the new media inServers A dminfirst - see below.) The advantage is that inServers A dmin,you can only associate a new media to a generic media. Thus, nomistake is possible.

In the preview window, in the Crop Markstab, select Cartouche Info for theprinting settings to be mentioned on the paper.

3.Print the target in actual size. Ensure that the print quality is correct: the inkshould not create holes in the paper, penetrate the paper, or bleed. On glossypaper, always check during daylight to ensure there are minimal blends in highdensity zones (especially in the top-right corner of the target).

If the print quality is not good, try changing the media type. If it still doesnt work,

create your own curves. Use the maximum ink setting (NOTE: the maximum inksetting should not be more than twice the individual inks maximum total). Do notforget to save, even if you only change the maximum ink setting.

4. Once satisfied with the result, please note down the following data on the target: The Caldera Graphics software version and the date

Your access number The printer name and media name The resolution and printing mode (4 or 6 colors) The media type (the media associated in Servers A dmin, or the one

selected for printing, depending on the case) If you defined personalized curves: the saved file name, the maximum

inking, and possibly the individual maximal percentages. The number of passes, Uni-dir or Bi-dir (less important)

5. Fill in the formular hereafter, and send it to Caldera Graphics along with yourprinted target.

6.Generate your profile or have it generated by Caldera. Carefully pack the printedtargets. The ICC file will be sent to you by e-mail.

NOTE:Be aware that all settings used when printing the target must also be usedwhen the profile is generated.
