April 18, 2015 (WEEK 7, MLS Game #63) 7 p.m. MT (Altitude; JOEtv SEA)
Having put an end to their long and historic streaks, the Colorado Rapids return home for a crucial match in the Western Conference when they play host to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids won for the first time in a record 18 matches, scoring their first goals of the season in a 4-0 victory at FC Dallas last weekend. Sounders FC remain on the road, having started their two-game road swing with a 1-0 defeat at the LA Galaxy last Sunday. REFEREE: Drew Fischer. Sounders FC won all three meetings between the teams a year ago, including a pair of 4-1 victories, one on April 26 at CenturyLink Field, and one Oct. 5 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The Rapids have won just once vs. Seattle over the last four seasons, a 5-1 victory on Oct. 5, 2013 in Commerce City. Since the start of 2011, Sounders FC have 10 of 12 meetings in regular season and MLS Cup play, with one draw.
Coaches record: Pablo Mastroeni vs. SEA: P3 W0 L3 D0 … Sigi Schmid vs. COL: P44 W25 L11 D8 COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids put an end to their long winless and goalless streaks in impressive fashion, rolling to a 4-0 victory against FC Dallas on Friday evening at Toyota Stadium. The Rapids are in a tie for ninth place in the Western Conference with 6 points from 5 matches. LAST MATCH
The Rapids scored their first league goal in six months and more than 10 hours of play in just the second minute. Dominique Badji put an end to the streak of attacking futility in style, turning home a Dillon Powers cross from the right wing from close range into the back of the net.
Powers doubled the lead in the 43rd minute, taking a feed on the left side of the FCD area, turning around a defender and driving at the goal before unleashing a low, left-footed blast inside the far post.
The score became 3-0 in the 70th minute when Juan Ramirez corralled the ball in the box and laid it off for Gabriel Torres, who slammed home a right-footed blast from the edge of the area.
The rout was complete five minutes from time when Dillon Serna drove forward out of midfield and hammered a well-taken left-footed missile from well outside the penalty area that beat Seitz high.
Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni made three changes to the team that fell 2-0 to the New England Revolution at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. James Riley and Drew Moor came into the back four in place of Jared Watts and Marc Burch, and Dominique Badji started in place of Sam Cronin.
COLORADO RAPIDS (4-2-3-1): Clint Irwin - James Riley, Bobby Burling, Drew Moor, Michael Harrington - Lucas Pittinari, Marcelo Sarvas - Gabriel Torres, Dillon Powers (Dillon Serna 81), Juan Ramirez (Nick LaBrocca 72), Dominique Badji (Vicente Sanchez 89).
TEAM NEWS The victory at FC Dallas put an end to the Rapids’ MLS-record winless streak of18 games, which equaled the
league mark set by Real Salt Lake in 2005-06.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
The Rapids also scored their first goal of the season, ending a 362-minute scoreless streak to start the year, the second-longest in MLS history.
“The most important thing is the goal is open. We can take this confidence for shooting and making plays, and finishing. I hope that we can keep working in this way and show a few more things every week and win some games,” said Claudio Lopez, who handled the bench coaching duties in place of the suspended Pablo Mastroeni.
It was the first Colorado goal since last October 11, their first in league play in more than 10 hours of action. The MLS record is 824 minutes without a goal, set by Toronto FC (2007); the only other club to have gone longer without scoring a goal than Colorado’s 602 minutes over two seasons is the Kansas City Wizards, who went 637 minutes without hitting the back of the net from the end of the 1998 season to the beginning of 1999.
“I think there is something to getting that first goal, the longer it goes on the more other people talk about it, it's harder to keep believing. It's hard to bring yourself up every week after week after week when you're not getting results or goals or assists,” said Dillon Powers. “I think it's a credit to this group and the mentality and leadership we have to be able to bring ourselves up week after week and finally get what we deserve.”
Dominique Badji returned to the starting lineup after coming off the substitutes’ bench in each of the previous two matches; he had started the opening two games of the season. Badji scored his first professional goal to send the Rapids on their way.
“It felt great. It was a huge weight off my shoulders and a huge weight off of everyone on the team,” Badji said. “Honestly, everybody on the team knew that after the first one went in, a lot more were going to come.”
Powers netted a goal and added an assist, the sixth time in his MLS career he’s done that. Powers again filled the attacking midfield role.
Gabriel Torres also scored a goal and added an assist, the second time in his league career he’s performed the feat – the first coming when he scored his first MLS goal, Oct. 5, 2013 vs. Seattle.
Drew Moor made his first start since Aug. 17, 2014, when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in a match against D.C. United.
“I didn’t know I was going to start until 48 hours before the game,” Moor said. “[Mastroeni] told me some words that resonated with me. He told me ‘You’re ready.’ Being back here in Dallas, I know this stadium as well as the stadium back in Denver. It’s a good feeling. I’ve been emotional about it, my first major [injury]. Something you wouldn’t want to wish on your worst enemy. Unfortunately I don’t have much time to enjoy it.”
SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC weren’t able to build on a victory, falling to the game’s only goal in a loss to the LA Galaxy on Sunday afternoon at StubHub Center. Sounders FC are in eighth place in the Western Conference with 7 points from 5 matches. LAST MATCH
The game's lone goal came in the 23rd minute. Juninho's free kick from the right flank found Omar Gonzalez at the far post, and he nodded the ball across the face of goal to the right post, where Alan Gordon got free and headed the ball into the upper-right corner from close range.
Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo saved the day for the home side, called upon to make 10 saves -- one shy of the club record. Four of the saves were on Sounders FC forward Lamar Neagle, including a pair of diving stops in the first half to set the tone for the match.
Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made two changes to the team that defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at CenturyLink Field. Cristian Roldan and Marco Pappa came into the team, in place of Clint Dempsey and the suspended Gonzalo Pineda.
SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-4-2): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans, Chad Marshall, Dylan Remick - Cristian Roldan (Aaron Kovar 81), Andy Rose, Osvaldo Alonso, Marco Pappa (Victor Mansaray 89) - Lamar Neagle (Chad Barrett 74), Obafemi Martins.
TEAM NEWS Sounders FC went down to their second defeat of the season with the defeat at the Galaxy. They still have yet
to score a goal away from CenturyLink Field this season. The 10 saves by Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo was the most ever by an opposing goalkeeper in Sounders
FC’s six-plus year MLS history. “I thought we had more chances, more clean-cut chances. Their goalkeeper comes up with a ton of saves.
Some hit him and some saves he makes and we end up losing the game 1-0,” said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. “I don’t think based on our performance we deserve to lose. I think we were as good if not better for good portions of the game but that is how the game goes sometimes.”
The Galaxy goal ended the Sounders FC shutout streak at 223 minutes, their first goal conceded since March 14, the fifth-longest streak in MLS this season.
“I thought that was probably our best game this year,” Brad Evans said. “Sometimes soccer is that way. One chance for them in the first half – a header where you lost your mark – and they’ll beat you that way.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Clint Dempsey was not available after suffering a hamstring injury in the days leading up to the match. Lamar Neagle moved forward to partner Obafemi Martins in the attack.
“[Neagle] brought a lot of energy. He played up top which he is sometimes more comfortable at but I just thought his energy was better and obviously I think he had like five shots so he had some good looks and I thought he played well,” Schmid said.
Marco Pappa returned to the starting lineup after a two-match absence due to international duty with Guatemala. Cristian Roldan also came back into the starting lineup for his second MLS start.
“I thought Cristian played well. I think he ran out of gas towards the end so we had to take him off. I think soccer-wise he played well,” said Schmid. “I thought he had a good game and I thought Dylan Remick had a good game attacking as a left back running down the left side for us. I was pleased there is nobody I can point to and say they didn’t play well.”
Said Evans: “Cristian did well with it, really well, and connected his passes, was calm under pressure and I can’t say enough about him. But we have said that all along, this is a good team and we are going to need these guys, and everybody to step up. MATCH PREVIEW
Eight days after trouncing FC Dallas 4-0 at Toyota Stadium, the
Colorado Rapids meet Seattle Sounders FC at Dick’s Sporting
Goods Park, intent on building on their first win of the 2015 sea-
son.
The Rapids have begun the campaign with four shutouts in their
first five games, including three on the road. At home they have
collected just the one point from two outings, courtesy of a 0-0
draw with New York City FC. They have also suffered their only
loss to date on home soil, going down 2-0 to New England Revo-
lution two weeks ago (4/4).
Sitting on six points from five games, the match with Seattle is
the first of back-to-back home games for the Rapids, with the
other being against FC Dallas (4/24).
Midfielder Sam Cronin again sits out for the Rapids, as he seeks
to recover from concussion, but head coach Pablo Mastroeni will
be back on the sidelines after serving a one-match suspension.
He watched the victory at FC Dallas from a suite, having been
sent from the bench during the home loss to the Revs.
And skipper Drew Moor could continue his comeback with a first
match at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since August 2, 2014 and a
1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake. He went the full 90 at FC Dallas last
week in what was his first appearance since a season-ending
ACL injury on August 17.

WHERE TO CATCH THE MATCH
Altitude will broadcast Colorado Rapids vs. Seattle Sounders FC
from Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The pre-game show begins at
6:30pm MT, with Richard Fleming and Marcelo Balboa. There will
also be coverage on Mile High Sports Radio (FM 94.1), as well
as Radio Luz 1650 AM.
HISTORY WITH SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC
It is fair to say that the Sounders have dominated this fixture,
since joining MLS in 2009. In the previous 15 games, the Rapids
have won on just two occasions. In contrast, the Sounders have
triumphed in 11 of the contests, outscoring the Rapids by 29
goals to 17.
Both Rapids’ victories have come at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park,
though even on home soil, Colorado has more often than not
come off second best, losing four of the seven meetings.
The Rapids’ last victory against the Sounders came on October
5, 2013. A goal from Deshorn Brown after just 15 seconds set
the tone, with the Rapids leading 4-0 by the break. They would
eventually win 5-1.
Their only other win over Seattle came in the first of two meetings
in 2010 (May 29), when a Conor Casey goal just past the hour
mark was the difference between the two teams.
Despite the Rapids enjoying a thumping 5-1 win in the latter stag-
es of 2013, the Sounders would have the last word that season,
beating Colorado 2-0 at CenturyLink Field in the play-in game of
the MLS Playoffs. This is the only time that the sides have met in
the postseason.
Seattle would also boss 2014 as far these two teams were con-
cerned, scoring nine goals and conceding just two in their three
victories over the Rapids (4-1, 1-0, 4-1).
Prior to the Rapids’ memorable 5-1 win in October 2013, games
between the sides had historically been close affairs. Only once
in the previous 11 matches had there been more than one goal
separating the teams.
LAST MEETING
Colorado Rapids 1, Seattle Sounders FC 4
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City, CO.
October 5, 2014
Played a year to the day after the Rapids’ 5-1 home win over
Supporters’ Shield-chasing Seattle, the result in 2014 was a very
different outcome as the star-studded Sounders sent the home
team to a crushing defeat by four goals to one. Clint Dempsey
and Obafemi Martins had a hand in all four goals, the pick of

TALE OF THE TAPE
MORE TO FOLLOW …
This is the first of three meetings between these two teams in the
regular season. Colorado Rapids head to CenturyLink Field to
face the Sounders on May 27, and again on July 18. Both match-
es will be televised by Altitude.
The Rapids have traditionally struggled in Seattle, managing to
avoid defeat just once in their previous eight regular season visits
(1-1 tie, July 20, 2013).
LAST MATCH
FC Dallas 0, Colorado Rapids 4
Toyota Stadium, Frisco, TX.
April 10, 2015
The Rapids rattled in four unanswered goals at FC Dallas for their
first win of 2015. Dominique Badji, the rookie out of Boston Uni-
versity, set them on their way after less than two minutes, before
further goals from Dillon Powers (43’), Gabriel Torres (70’) and
Dillon Serna (85’) secured them a convincing win in Texas.
Heading to Dallas, the Rapids had failed to score all season. But
four goals in 83 minutes put paid to that particular problem.
END OF GOAL DROUGHT
Dominique Badji’s goal at FC Dallas was the Colorado Rapids’
first of the season, and their first since October 11, 2014 in a 2-1
loss at Chivas USA. Badji’s strike ended a goal drought lasting
602 minutes, which now stands as the second longest in MLS
history, ahead of Chivas USA (601), but some way short of To-
ronto FC (824). It also ended a stretch of 362 minutes without a
goal at the start of a MLS season, which is again second to To-
ronto FC (383).
ROAD WIN
Victory at Toyota Stadium was the Rapids’ first win away from
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since April 12, 2014 (1-0 at Toronto
FC). They had gone 16 road games without success.
It was also their first road win against US opposition (they won at
Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC in 2014) since triumphing
1-0 at LA Galaxy on September 7, 2013.
MOOR IS BACK
Team skipper Drew Moor made his long-awaited return to com-
petitive action last Friday, leading the side in their 4-0 win at FC
Dallas. The former FC Dallas defender had been sidelined since
suffering a torn ACL just minutes into the match at D.C. United on
August 17, 2014. His appearance at Toyota Stadium came 236
days since that painful incident.
SERNA SINKS A BEAUTY FOR MILESTONE
Dillon Serna does not tend to score tap-ins, as shown with last
season’s spectacular strike at D.C. United and last week’s thun-
derous long-distance drive for the Rapids’ fourth at FC Dallas.
Not only did that strike round off a very good night for the Rapids,
but it was also the club’s 800th all-time regular season goal.
MIX ‘N’ MATCH
The Rapids boast an impressive defensive record this season,
managing to keep four clean sheets from their opening five
games. They have achieved this using eight different defenders
across the back four – Marc Burch, Bobby Burling, Michael Har-
rington, Drew Moor, Shane O’Neill, James Riley, Axel Sjoberg
and Jared Watts. The Rapids have only started two of the five
games with the same back line.
THREE WITH MAXIMUM MINUTES
Just three Rapids players have featured in all 450 minutes of the
2015 season. They are goalkeeper Clint Irwin, defender Michael
Harrington and midfielder Lucas Pittinari.
KEEPING CLEAN SHEETS
Talking of goalkeeper Clint Irwin, the Rapids’ #1 went 10 games
without a shutout, but has since enjoyed four in the team’s open-
ing five games. He chalked up 10 in his debut season in MLS,
which tied the club record set by Joe Cannon in 2004, and fol-
lowed that with seven clean sheets in what was a trying 2014.
BIRTHDAY BOY BEN
Defender Ben Newnam will celebrate his 24th birthday on Satur-
day. The former Charlotte Eagles player signed for the Rapids on
March 21, having spent much of preseason with the club. Arriving
from USL affiliate Charlotte Independence, he is yet to make his
MLS debut but has been in the 18 on two occasions.

GAME OF FIRSTS
A number of record runs came to a close with the 4-0 win at FC
Dallas. A number of firsts were also created.
A first goal in MLS for rookie Dominique Badji.
A first assist in MLS for Juan Ramirez (on Gabriel Torres’ goal).
A first assist for the Colorado Rapids for Marcelo Sarvas (on
Dillon Powers’ goal)
For Torres, it was his first goal since September 27, 2014 (1-1
vs. SJ). It was also only the second time that he had scored and
made an assist in the same game. The previous occasion was in
the 5-1 home win over Seattle Sounders FC (10/05/13).
Dillon Powers scored his first goal since September 13, 2014 (2-
2 vs. POR).
It was the sixth time in his career he had scored a goal and con-
tributed an assist in the same game. The last time was also
against the Timbers on September 13, 2014.
And it was the first goal for Dillon Serna since August 17, 2014
(L 4-2 @ DC).
PLAYER MENTIONS
Two Rapids players, Dominique Badji and Dillon Powers, were
named in the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for their fine
displays against Dallas. Badji and Powers were instrumental in
the Rapids breaking their scoring drought, and both continued to
make key contributions throughout the match.
Dillon Serna, meanwhile, was among the five contenders for
AT&T MLS Goal of the Week for his sweet strike late on.
SEATTLE CONNECTIONS
Born in Colorado Springs and now playing for his local team, de-
fender James Riley could face one of his former clubs this Satur-
day in the shape of the Seattle Sounders. Acquired via the Ex-
pansion Draft, Riley spent three seasons at the Sounders (2009-
2011), during which time he scored one of his two career goals,
in a 2-1 loss at Houston Dynamo on October 23, 2010. That re-
mains his most recent goal in MLS. Riley is now with his seventh
club, having also played at New England Revolution, San Jose
Earthquakes, D.C. United, Chivas USA and LA Galaxy.
Rapids defender Marc Burch arrived in Seattle after Riley, play-
ing for the Sounders in 2012 and 2013. Like Riley, left-back
Burch also enjoyed time at LA Galaxy and D.C. United. This,
though, is the first time the two have been teammates.
Nathan Sturgis, now in his second stint at Houston Dynamo,
arrived in Seattle via the same path as Riley. He played two sea-
sons at the Sounders (2009-10), and a season-and-a-half with
the Rapids (2013-14).
Seattle have a number of former Rapids players within their
ranks, including Gallery of Honor inductee Chris Henderson
(Sporting Director) and his younger brother Sean (U-16 Head
Coach). Up until the end of last season, they had former goal-
keeper Marcus Hahnemann on their roster (since retired).
Tyson Wahl spent three seasons at the Sounders (2009-11).
Like Riley and Sturgis, he arrived via the Expansion Draft. He
then made a handful of appearances for the Rapids during the
2012 season.
Tyrone Marshall enjoyed two spells with the Rapids (1998 &
2011-12). In between, he played two seasons at the Sounders
(2009-10). Marshall is now an assistant coach at Real Salt Lake.
JOINING THE 600 CLUB
Saturday’s match at home to Seattle Sounders FC is the Rapids’
600th regular season contest. It comes a little over 19 years since
their first-ever match in MLS, on April 13, 1996. On that occasion,
the Rapids lost 3-0 at Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas
City). As well as being their 600th all-time regular season fixture,
the meeting with Sigi Schmid’s side is also the club’s 300th home
game. Their first home game in MLS came on April 21, 1996 and
resulted in a 3-1 win over Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas).
Match number 500 came on April 28, 2012, with the Rapids en-
joying a 4-0 home win over Chivas USA. Kamani Hill (2), Tony
Cascio and Jeff Larentowicz were the scorers.
The Rapids’ all-time record currently stands at: (W-L-T):
225-256-118 (GF 800, GA 885)
Their home record, after 299 games, is:
152-80-67 (GF 458, GA 321)
CHARLOTTE BACK IN ACTION
The Rapids’ USL affiliate, Charlotte Independence, play just the
third match of their existence when they head to Virginia to face
Richmond Kickers this Saturday (April 18). To date, the Inde-
pendence have one point from two games, having lost their his-
toric franchise opener 3-2 to Charleston Battery (3/27), before
drawing 1-1 at Wilmington Hammerheads (4/3).
ALL-STAR OPPOSITION ANNOUNCED

Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday, July 29, will involve the
English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs have a

and-coming USMNT fullback DeAndre Yedlin - formerly with Se-
attle Sounders - and one-time Arsenal striker Emmanuel

the highly competitive and entertaining format. In addition to hon-

world-famous clubs such as Manchester United (2010 & 2011),
Everton FC (2009), Chelsea FC (2006 & 2012), AS Roma (2012)

cent discount offered to those who purchase All-Star Game tick-
ets. More information on how to secure tickets to both exhibition
matches can be found at MLSsoccer.com/all-star.

of their remaining 14 games, the club were keen to rebuild on and
off the field. And when Ben Newnam signed for the club on March
21, he became the 12th new player, on top of Claudio Lopez as
Director of Soccer, Pádraig Smith as Sporting Director and Bri-
an Mullan as Assistant Coach.

Terrace to Section 117 in the South Endline for three matches
this season. The three games are against FC Dallas (4/24), San
Jose Earthquakes (5/8) and Columbus Crew (8/8).
C38 member Dave Wegner explained: “We had an experiment of
moving for the Chivas game last season and we felt it created a
little more unity in the stadium.
“People gravitated towards us, they did not go the other way. It
made us a lot more visible and a lot more audible. One of our
ultimate goals is to grow the culture and expand the experience.”

Brad Evans, AndyRose, Tyrone Mears, Lamar Neagle and Stefan Frei are the onlyplayers to have appeared in all five matches in 2015.
