The Need to Know: Top 3 Resources for Adjuncts
Professional Development Stipend
Are you investing your
time and effort in profes-
sional development work-
shops, classes, confer-
ences, and webinars? Well
don’t feel like it’s only
worth it down the road!
CMC offers a $1000 sti-
pend to Adjuncts who are
interested in furthering
their professional develop-
ment on their own.
After 90 hours of profes-
sional development work,
Adjuncts can earn $1000
up to three different times.
So the next time you get a
workshop invitation in
your mailbox, get it ap-
proved by your IC, then
sign up and start tracking
all the hard work you’ve
done. It will pay off more
quickly that you think, and
you’ll be more prepared to
take that professional leap
when the opportunity
arises. For more informa-
tion about the professional
development stipend, con-
tact your campus IC.
CMC’s Strategic Plan is coming
together and was reviewed by the Board of Trustees in January. Together, the CMC community has
collaborated on ideas and visions for this institution and a solid draft plan is emerging. Below is the proposed
vision and guiding principles that were boiled down from months of
great teamwork and input in order to make CMC better.
Proposed Revised Vision
Our vision is to be the most inclusive and innovative student-centered
college in the country thereby elevating the economic, social,
cultural, and environmental vitality of the beautiful Rocky Mountain communities we serve.
Proposed Revised Guiding Princi-
ples
We collaborate with one another
and with external partners.
We apply the principles of sustain-
ability, balancing social equity, economic imperatives, and environ-
mental impacts.
We strive for excellence and inno-
vation in all we do.
We create a positive working
environment and a stimulating and
enjoyable teaching and learning
experience.
We hold ourselves responsible and
accountable for our actions.
We maintain the public trust
through responsible stewardship
and fiscal transparency.
We meet challenges with thought-
ful deliberation and purposeful
action.

In an effort to better prepare
Adjuncts for success in the class-
room, the Summit Campus initi-
ated a mentorship program for the
Fall of 2013. The goals were to
build expertise in our Adjunct
faculty, build community and to
support new faculty members.
The expectation for the program
was for the mentor to meet with
the mentee during New Faculty
Orientation to go over basic how
to’s, and then later meet to dis-
cuss goals for the first semester.
The mentor would visit the men-
tee’s classroom and provide feed-

Please welcome Dr. Carrie Hauser to CMC as the new College
President. She has hit the ground running since starting in No-
vember and has made her way to all the campus sites in a very
short time. Dr. Hauser has met with Faculty Senate as well as
Faculty Senate President Gwyn Ebie to discuss faculty issues for
the upcoming year. She has been very transparent in sending
“quick updates” to the college-wide list serv on her activity with
the Board of Trustees, Foundation and other organizational sup-
porters. She recently spent time with State Senator Gail Schwartz
and State Representative Bob Rankin to discuss community col-
lege issues in the legislature; the most recent session began earlier
this month. Faculty Senate is looking forward to a productive and
positive relationship with the new president in the future.
The Faculty Senate has been asked to clarify procedures for both Academic Freedom and Intellectual Property. Based on the
AAUP, faculty members own their own work with the exception of work for hire. If a faculty member receives pay for a project
like course development, then CMC owns the material.
The conflict arises in particular respect to Adjuncts. Many Adjuncts neither receive pay for their work, nor have time to create a
course from scratch. Instructors are often asked to hand over their courses to new Adjunct hires so as not to have to reinvent the
wheel and to ensure a sense of continuity across courses. This is very helpful to Adjunct instructors who are hired with little time to
develop material or who are asked to teach a course that they haven’t taught before. If you have comments on these procedures,
please email Faculty Senate President Gwyn Ebie at [email protected].
to prioritize action items within the college and
the resulting document has been distributed and
referenced by the administration on many occa-
sions. Adjuncts should come prepared for a
lively and productive work session so we may
present our action items to the college after the in
-service. Stay tuned for more details about this
work session, and consider attending the college
wide in-service this spring, scheduled for May 8.
The Faculty Senate has made recommendations for
the College Wide In-Service that include holding
the event on Saturdays so more Adjunct Faculty
can attend. Data from previous events shows that
Adjunct attendance is higher when the event is held
on Saturdays. Adjuncts are paid a full day meeting
rate for attending and it’s a great time to meet col-
leagues, collaborate with your disciplines, and
network with other campus faculty.
This year, the Adjunct faculty will be holding a
closed door session to establish a list of priorities
that we will recommend to Faculty Senate and to
the college administration. The full-time faculty
held a similar session last year that has been used

What does this mean to you?
The first is that Adjuncts may
teach or participate in
“projects” for up to 9 credit
hours total. Projects may in-
clude mentor programs, pro-
fessional development com-
mittees, or other non-
academic activities as exam-
ples. It also means that if you
are a credit teaching Adjunct,
you cannot take on non-
academic activities that pay
an hourly wage. Further, Ad-
juncts can no longer teach
both credit and non-credit
If you’ve been around CMC
for a few semesters, you have
likely encountered some
changes to your teaching
loads due to rules set forth in
the Affordable Health Care
Act and the Federal Wage and
Hour Fair Labor Standards.
The folks in Human Re-
sources have been working
diligently to address these
federal laws and to make sure
that CMC is in compliance
with the rules and regulations
under each policy. Further, all
credit teaching faculty must
be credentialed for compli-
courses due to the Fair Wage
and Hour Fair Labor Stan-
dards. Some work-arounds
have been identified by HR
but all activities must be
translated into credit hours.
Jan Aspelund has volunteered
to visit campuses and sites to
visit with Adjuncts regarding
the changes so please contact
Jessie Burley at
you’re interested in setting up
a meeting to discuss these
changes.
