Proud History...Promising FutureEstablished in 1881, Colorado City has a history

that could have been at the heart of any western book or movie. It had bar room brawls, gun fi ghts and a horse drawn street car that shuttled people from the booming business district to the zoo and race track. It had cattle drives through town, buf-falo and buff alo hunters and troubling issues with the Native Americans. With the expansion of the railroad and cattle ranches, Colorado City’s central location and progressive development earned this wild west town the title of “Mother City of West Texas”.

Colorado City still upholds much of its early character in the historic downtown and through in-teresting citizens and life ways. Natural resources, location and determination continue to propel Col-orado City into the future. Th is area proudly sup-ports a diverse economy powered by cotton farm-ing, wind energy, oil and gas, ranching, hunting and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Colorado City has had a number of euphonious titles such as “Dodge City of West Texas,” “Th e Queen of the West,” and “the Mother City of West

Texas” and was the railhead for both important rail lines and cattle shipping in the West.

Th e community is the fi nal rest-ing place for three Texas Rangers, R. C. “Dick” Ware, the fi rst sher-

iff of Mitchell County; Y. D. Mc Murry, another sheriff in the late 1880s and William Marion Green.

Currently, Colorado City sports a population of around 4,151 visi-tor-loving folks, but the city serves

Guitars, jazz and more at Opera HouseTh e lights go down, the music comes up and the historic

old Opera House is once again in business.Th e original building was constructed in 1899-1900 and

featured staged light opera, vaudeville acts and after 1911, silent movies.

Although it was sold and converted to a boarding house in 1925 as the Great Depression of the 20’s and 30’s took its toll on the country, Colorado City’s residents restored it to its original purpose during the mid-20th century.

Th e West Texas Chamber of Commerce presented the 1985-86 Cultural Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Colorado City Playhouse, along with the Casa Manana Th eater in Fort Worth.

Community leaders, business men, teachers and students

joined forces in 2008 to restore the Opera House as close to its historical appearance as possible.

With refurbished walls, a drop ceiling and better insulation, along with decorations that stay true to the historical period, the Opera House is once again a place for performances ranging from drama to music, including concerts by Jay Boy Adams and Bill Worrell, the Tarleton State University Jazz band and the West Texas Steel Guitar Association.

The one time your mother won’t fuss at you for playing in the mud is during the 4-H annual Mud Bog held every Mother’s Day at the arena grounds in Colorado City.

The 4-H fundraiser has divisions for street class, modifi ed and open class, to see who can get across the deep pit of mud the fastest....sometimes it’s a question of seeing who can get across at all.

For the youngsters, the Dash for Cash is the highlight of the afternoon, as the young-at-heart wade through the pit for a cash prize.

There are no losers in this event as even the ones who get ‘bogged’ down come away with smiles.

Chamber sponsors dinner for hunters

Mitchell County is home to abundant wild-life. Coyotes, deer, horned toads, quail, turkey and dove, as well as elusive badgers, foxes and the occasional cougar all call it home.

Deer leases and private and group hunting parties are a long-standing tradition in Mitchell County, as well as being a integral part of the economy.

In addition to local wildlife, hunters can

pursue more exotic game at the Champion Ranch.

To honor hunters and their contributions, the Colorado City Chamber of Commerce holds an annual Hunter’s Appreciation Dinner.

The catered barbeque dinner with all the trimmings is held in the his-toric Railhead Building down-town. The event draws large crowds and gives away thousands of dollars in door prizes and gun raffl es.

Attendees enjoy swapping hunting stories and the best places to bag the biggest buck worthy of mounting.

Colorado City is aff ectionately known as the “Poppy Mallow Capital of the World”.

Th e poppy mallow (callirhoe scabriuscula robles) fl ower was listed as a State Endangered Spe-cies in 1983, being identifi ed in only three counties in Texas: Coke, Mitchell and Runnels. Th ere are approximately 200 identifi ed plants in the county.

While applying for a grant with the TPWD sev-eral years ago, the county agreed to establish a fi ve-acre tract of land that is

protected for the poppy mallow and to preserve and study the plant. Th e county, along with Angelo State University, protect, preserve and continue to study the fl owers’ characteristics.

Today, the poppy mallow is thriving at its designated loca-

Researchers and scientists have full access to this liv-ing laboratory, and their eff orts to save the poppy mallow fl ower are improving.

Contributed by CHS Staff From a school lens, the answer to that

question is quite simple- her citizens! As a high school administrator for the last nine years, I have had the opportunity to work with Colorado City’s parents, students, and community members in so many ways. Our teachers really know and care about our students. Our students and parents really know our teachers and support them. Our community’s business people and volunteers step up and help out whenever there is even an hint of a need! Th is cohesive and col-laborative approach to education has helped

our campus earn the status of “recognized” from the Texas Education Agency.

Th is is not a label that belongs just to Colorado High School, but to all of our citi-zens! In a town like this, it truly takes all of us to make our schools the best that they can be!

Support for our school from the citizens of Colorado City does not stop with aca-demics. Our community rallies behind our sports teams, which made the state playoff s in football, volleyball, basketball, and track last school year. Th ey know that community excitement that is generated behind winning

programs creates winning schools and a winning atmosphere in general.

Our fi ne arts programs are second to no one! Th e Colorado High School Band advanced to the Texas State Marching Band Contest this fall and in-tends on making that a tradition! Our theatre department took top honors at their competition in March, and our art programs are supported by the fantastic folks in the West Texas Art Guild.

Colorado City’s citizens also come

out to support our young men and wom-en who participate in the annual Mitchell County Livestock Show. Tens of thousands of dollars are donated to that association by the citizens of Colorado City. Finally, the graduates from Colorado City (and sur-rounding communities) are recognized by local clubs and organizations, churches, and individuals.

Th ese folks come together and make sure that our graduates have a chance for success beyond high school by generously donating thousands of dollars in local scholarships. Th e time, energy, eff ort, love, and care given to our schools by Colorado City citizens makes it truly a great place in which to live!

Westbrook ISD

Contributed by WHS Staff Westbrook ISD, home of the Westbrook

Wildcats, is located approximately 9 miles west of Colorado City on Interstate 20. Th e campus of Westbrook ISD is located at 102 E. Bertner.

Th e District 1-A school has an average en-rollment of 225 students in Pre-K through 12th grades, featuring a student/ teacher ra-tio of 12 to 1.

Westbrook High School is one of those few places left in the world where a student is a person and not a number. It is quality education with the personal touch, where ev-eryone knows your name.

To supplement the basic core curriculum, Westbrook ISD off ers elective courses to sec-ondary students that enhance their educa-tion. Junior and senior level students may also elect to take classes through the Dis-tance Learning Lab for dual credit through Western Texas College.

Students are encouraged to participate in academic, organizational, and athletic ex-tracurricular activities. Opportunities for students to diversify their interests are many at Westbrook ISD. A relatively small enroll-ment means that all students interested in participating in extracurricular activities, have a chance to do so.

Teachers and other faculty at Westbrook encourage students to branch out and explore new fi elds. Whether its theater arts, athletics, or ag science that interests your student, they will feel at home at WISD.

Some of the highlights of the year for Westbrook ISD students and families are Pigskin Preview, the Fall Festival, local stock show, variety show, and the senior trip. Th e last seven years, seniors have enjoyed a trip to Disney World in Florida, which they’ve paid for

completely through fundraising and work-ing before their senior year even begins.

Each year, Westbrook graduating seniors are awarded numerous scholarships. In fact, for over ten years now, every graduate of WISD has left with not only a diploma, but also scholarship money in hand. Westbrook graduates are prepared fi nancially, as well as academically, to further their education and future endeavors.

The Heart of West Texas Museum: more than just exhibits

Th e Heart of West Texas Museum, located at the corner of 3rd and Locust Sts. in Colo-rado City, captures both the pre-history and the history of our part of Texas. Th e building itself was the home of one of Colorado City’s earliest physicians, Dr. P.C. Coleman, who arrived here with his family in 1882.

Exhibits pay tribute to Kiowa Chief Lone Wolf, prehistoric mammoth and bison, western heritage exhibits like the T&P ca-boose, and prominent fi gures in our com-munity’s history: such as Sheriff Dick Ware, who killed the outlaw Sam Bass; “80 John” Wallace, the fi rst black rancher in Texas; and Colonel Isaac Ellwood, the inventor of barbed wire.

If that were all the Heart of West Texas Museum had to off er, it would be a lot, but there is much more. You are invited to come in for a tour, or to wander around at your own pace and get a glimpse of our heritage. Th e museum is open Tuesday through Fri-day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10

a.m. till 2 p.m. Th ere is no charge for ad-mittance, although donations are accept-ed to help fund future projects. Please call (325) 728-8285 for more information.

In its 128 year history, Colo-rado City has been shaped by many great men and women. Few, however, were as famous, well-connected and wealthy as

Heritage House

A legacy that endures to the presentthe builder of the Heritage House, Colonel Jeremiah P. Hodgson. His home at 425 Chestnut St. is a testament to those who came to West Tex-

as, not just on their way somewhere else, but to leave something valuable behind.

Son-in-law of General Tom Green, for whom Tom Green County is named, Hodgson was well-known in his own right, both as successful rancher and clerk at the Federal Court in El Paso. He was known as a Virginia gentleman and much of the house he built refl ects the architectural style of that area, with its wrap around porch, separate kitchen, front parlor, family sitting room, fi re-places, and breezeways.

Heritage House was the fi rst brick house built in Colorado City, but even the bricks have a story to tell. Th ey are made from clay found in the bed and along the banks of the Colorado River.

Although the house has been home to many respected citizens in its cen-tury and a quarter existence, including Winfi eld Scott, millionaire rancher;

W.T. Scott (no relation), promoter of the T&P Railroad; and Dr. Oscar Majors, local physician; the Heritage House owes its preservation to the late Marian Bassham of the Spade Ranch, who bought it for the purpose of restoration. It became a Texas His-toric Landmark in 1966 and was add-ed to the National Register in 1979 through the eff orts of the late J. Lee Jones Jr., who wrote and edited Lore and Legend, a compilation of Mitch-ell County’s history. Mrs. Bassham presented the house as a gift to Colo-rado City in 1987.

Th e house, with its beautiful pe-riod furnishings, can be viewed by appointment by calling the Heart of West Texas Museum at (325) 728-8285, and can be leased for special events including garden weddings for a reasonable fee.

SAN ANGELO -- Hutchinson Elementary fi fth grader Rankin Bullard wasn’t as concerned with the heat Saturday at the San Angelo sports complex as he was with making sure he and his Colorado City Wolf Pack teammates were able to turn up the heat on everyone else.

Turning up the heat -- as in making it harder for the hundreds of other athletes from West Texas to

get past Dan Gainey’s squad for a chance at qualify-ing for the Texas Region X Track and Field Meet.

Bullard and the Wolf Pack can consider the mis-sion accomplished. Th e Colorado City summer track team turned in a stellar eff ort by nailing down more than 25 berths in the upcoming regional meet, which is slated for July 7 at the Angelo State Multi-Purpose Complex.

Individuals placing in the top three at the regional meet will advance to the TAAF state meet in July.

Some of the best ranch hands in Texas will be converging on Colorado City this weekend to compete in the Colorado City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ranch Rodeo. Th e event will be held this Saturday, June 30, at the Mitchell County Rodeo Grounds.

are teams from Clyde, Big Spring, San Angelo and two local groups from the Twin Mountain Ranch and the C&S Ranch.

“It’s going to be good and very exciting,” said Brodie Harris. “We want to encourage every-one to come out and watch our local boys as they compete for the Ranch Rodeo title.”

Th e Colorado City City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, June 26, to authorize Southwest Securities to seek funding for a $2.5 million project that would make needed improvements to the municipal waste-water treatment facility and the construction of a new fi re and police station. Th e city could hear back on the company’s eff orts to secure bonds at its Aug. 14 meet-ing.

Under a proposal submitted by Southwest Securi-ties’ Brian Grubb, the city could get bonds through the private market and secure funds for the project at ap-proximately 5 percent annual interest, making the city annual payment -- which would not begin until fi scal year 2009 -- about $190,000 a year over 25 years.

City offi cials said the $2.5 million could be repaid early should the city, as expected, be approved to re-

ceive approximately $8 million it applied for in USDA Rural Development funding.

Th e city is currently in violation of TCEQ rules at its wastewater facility. Th e city recently agreed to buy land adjacent to the plant to expand its discharge area.

Part of the funds could go toward buying the Brown-fi eld Building or building a new structure to house the police and fi re stations.
