STASTNY NAMED TO U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM Paul Stastny was named to the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, USA Hockey announced yesterday.  Stastny will representthe United States at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games held Feb. 7-23 in Sochi, Russia.  Stastny will be making his second appearanceat the Olympics, as he helped Team USA capture the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.  Stastny played in allsix games for the Americans, tallying a goal and two assists while winning 54% of his faceoffs.  Stastny, 28, has also represented hiscountry at three world championships (2007, 2012, 2013), finishing as one of USA’s top two scorers at all three events.  He helped theUnited States win the bronze medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Helsinki and Stockholm, as he led Team USA in scoringwith 15 points (7g/8a) in 10 games as the Americans captured their first medal at the event since 2004.

POWER-ING UP The Avalanche scored a season-high three power-play goals against Columbus on Tuesday, going 3-for-3 with the man advantage.  Itmarked the first time that Colorado scored three power-play goals in a game since Oct. 13, 2011 at Ottawa, when they scored fourPPG.  The last time the Avs had a perfect power play night with a minimum of three opportunities was Feb. 8, 2002 at Minnesota (also3-for-3).  The Avalanche's power play has gone 8-for-21 (38.1%) over the last seven games. MILESTONE WATCH •  Matt Duchene has scored 98 career goals, two shy of 100.  He would become the 20th player in franchise history and ninth in    Avalanche history (since 1995-96) to reach the century mark in goals.  He will also become the second player from the 2009    draft class to score 100 goals (John Tavares). •  Gabriel Landeskog needs three points to reach 100 NHL points. •  Jamie McGinn needs four points to reach 100 points for his career. •  Jean-Sebastien Giguere is tied with Ken Dryden (258) for 44th place on the NHL's all-time wins list. •  Giguere is tied with Jocelyn Thibault (586) for 44th place on the all-time games played list. •  Giguere is tied with Tom Barrasso and Sean Burke for 37th place on the NHL’s all-time shutout list (38). WORLD JUNIORS Two Avalanche prospects are representing their respective countries at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden,defenseman Will Butcher (USA) and defenseman Chris Bigras (Canada).  Butcher has tallied five points (2g/3a) in four games, rankinghim second among American defensemen in scoring.  Bigras has also appeared in all four tournament games, posting a +2 rating(0g/0a).  The United States will face Russia in one quarterfinal today, while Canada meets Switzerland.  Butcher, Colorado's fifth-roundpick (123rd overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft, is a freshman at the University of Denver (NCHC), where he has four points (3g/1a) in 17games.  Bigras, the Avalanche's second-round choice (32nd overall) in 2013, has 11 points (3g/8a) in 29 games with the OHL's OwenSound Attack. HAPPY HOLIDAYS The Avs posted their second-best record ever at the NHL’s Holiday Break (23-10-3).  Colorado’s .681 points percentage and 49 pointstrailed only the 2000-01 Stanley Cup championship team, who had 51 points and a .729 points percentage at Christmas.  The 1997-98squad also had 49 points but had played two more games than this year’s team.  The Avalanche’s 23 wins this year matched theirmost-ever at the Holidays. RECORD START BEHIND THE BENCH Patrick Roy led the Avalanche to a 6-0-0 start, tying the NHL record for consecutive wins by a head coach to begin his career.  MarioTremblay also won his first six games with the Canadiens in 1995-96.  Roy went on to become the first coach in NHL history to win 14of his first 16 career games and one of only two coaches in league history to win 12 of his first 13 (Marc Crawford, Quebec, 1994-95). Roy posted 15 wins in his first 20 games behind the bench, tying Dan Bylsma (15-2-3) for the second-most wins among active coachesthrough their first 20 career games.  Only Todd McLellan (16-3-1) won more.  The Roy-led Avalanche were the fastest team to reach 20wins in franchise history (27th game) and matched the club record for most wins (21) through the first 30 games of a season.

Craig Berube was named head coach of the Flyers on Oct. 7, 2013 and is in his 17th overall season with the organization.  Berube began hiscoaching career as a player-assistant with the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, in 2003-04 and became a full-time assistant thefollowing year.  He spent most of the 2006-07 season as a Flyers assistant before returning to the Phantoms as their head coach for the 2007-08 season, leading the team to a 49-29-5-3 record and a trip to the East Division Finals  He was reappointed as a Flyers assistant in thesummer of 2008. Berube played parts of seven seasons with the Flyers (1986-91, 1998-2000), recording 20 goals and 34 assists for 54 points and 1,138 penaltyminutes in 323 regular season games.
