Staff Profile

What is the most rewarding part of being involved with the Studio Kids Program?

What do you think is special or unique about the Studio Kids Program?

Who has been your most memorable student?

Meet Katie Healey ‘20Teaching Assistant, Studio Kids ProgramMCAD Senior, Comic Art Major

It has to be seeing the things that these kids make. The projects are directed by the teacher and TAs, but it’s the campers who get to express anything they want. Their individuality and imagination is encouraged and we all help to try to see the campers’ vision through. All of these kids are so talented and creative in their own unique ways, it’s all about finding what they’re interested in.

The environment at MCAD, plus having the museum next door at the disposal of the students is an incredible opportunity. The campers have these resources for inspiration and reference right in front of them. Each camp takes a field trip to the museum, where we take in everything through a lens relevant to the week’s theme. Then we discuss either as a group or one-on-one, really exercising their budding critical thinking skills.

As corny as this sounds, it’s hard to choose one because all of the students, especially the repeat students, stand out in a way that makes me appreciate having met them. One in particular was a camper who loved drawing cats- his cats, your cats, imaginary cats with wings. He’s even drawn my cat, Dovey, after seeing a photo. That drawing is a treasure and is hanging on my fridge. He struck me as being shy at first, but I think that’s just how everyone would feel being in a new environment. Once he got to open up and express himself in his work, his enthusiasm and passion and pride in what he got to accomplish shined through.

What advice would you give to a young artist (or parent) who is coming to the Studio Kids Program for the first time?

Where else can we find you and your work?

I’d say come with something cool to show everyone! All the campers get to know each other pretty well over the course of the week, but it’s always awesome when right off the bat somebody’s passion gets people laughing or excited together.
