Publisher’s Column Welcome to this issue of Physi-cians Hospitals and Clinics. You will notice that we chose a special design for this issue because we are featuring two cover stories. One article concerns a prominent Ft. Wayne physician and the other piece covers an unopposed, dually accredited residency program lo-cated in the heart of Ft. Wayne. We know you will enjoy both stories! On this side of the magazine we are delighted to feature Colo-nel William Pond, M.D. Dr. Pond has a career that has spanned over 35 years and has been practicing medicine in the community as well as the military, making him quite unique. Colonel Pond is a board certi-fied anesthesiologist and works for Associated Anesthesiologists of Fort Wayne primarily at Lutheran Hospital. He provides anesthesia services for all surgical subspe-cialties. With his continuing love of learning and of his country, he continued his education at the Air Force School of Aerospace Medi-cine from which he was the Dis-tinguished Graduate in 1993. From

1992 to present Colonel Pond has served our country as a flight sur-geon, Chief of Aerospace Medicine and the Commander of the 122nd Medical Group, Ft Wayne; he is the Indiana State Air Surgeon respon-sible for the 122nd Medical Group of Ft Wayne and the 181st Medi-cal Group of Terre Haute, as well as other geographically separated units throughout Indiana. He has received over 30 major awards and decorations for his distinguished medical career. He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesia and Pharmacology for the Indiana University School of Medicine and has taught Anesthesia and Critical Care Skills for the last 30 years to medical students and residents. In the article you will see that his lovely wife Cami, has also made major contributions in the Indiana General Assembly and the National Alliance in raising awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTDS), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other stresses that affect military personnel and their families. Both Dr. Pond and Cami work

tirelessly as volunteer physician and nurse for humanitar-ian medical missions, most often for Opera-tion Smile, providing restorative craniofacial surgery. If not for this organization, the children would remain untreated. He has treated children in Pales-tine, Thailand, China, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Mo-rocco, India, Bangladesh, Jordan, Mexico, Egypt, and Haiti. These medical missions are well received in the foreign countries where the parents are extremely grateful for Operation Smile’s dedication and devotion to the children for without the work of these volunteers these children would be left untreated. A very special thanks to Dr. & Mrs. Pond for allowing us into their home and their personal lives.

Next to creating a life, the greatest thing one can do is save a life. – A. Lincoln

Smiling is infectious, You can catch it like the flu.

Someone smiled at me today, and I started smiling too!

Dr. Pond truly recognizes the importance of greeting the world with a smile. He takes

delight and pleasure working with and helping heal people around the globe, adding a bit of sunshine to their life and bringing a smile to their faces. It is only appropriate that he is

involved in “Operation Smile.”

Military Career Colonel William Pond, M.D. has a career that has spanned over 35 years. He has been practicing medicine in the community as well as the military, making him unique. In 1975, Colonel Pond graduated summa cum laude from Butler Uni-versity with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Zoology. Destined to become a physician, he graduated from Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine in 1979, following with a residency in Anesthesiology. With his continuing love of learning and of his country, he continued his education at the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, from which he was the Distinguished Graduate in 1993.

From 1992 to present Colonel Pond has served our country as a flight surgeon, Chief of Aerospace Medicine, and then Commander of the 122nd Medical Group, Ft Wayne; he is the Indiana State Air Surgeon responsible for the 122nd Medical Group of Ft Wayne and the 181st Medical Group of Terre Haute, as well as other geographically separated units throughout Indiana. As a flight surgeon, he has logged more than 500 hours of flight time and has flown in 180 sorties in which 62 were combat missions, often providing in-flight care of wounded soldiers. Though engaged in the full time practice of medicine, in 1997 Colonel Pond was able to graduate

by correspondence from the Air Command and Staff College, which prepares its students to develop, employ and, most importantly, command air, space and cyber-space power in joint, multinational and interagency operations. This college awarded his research and writing the rating of “Outstanding” and also educated Dr. Pond to think critically and exercise a combina-tion of analytical and practical tools for leadership roles. This enables students to evolve from tactical ex-perts in a particular career field into operational-level leaders. In 2000, he graduated from Air War College, the senior Air Force Professional college that focuses on national and international policy as well as em-ploying airpower in joint operations.

dren. Through this venture, he and his surgical team were able to meet with the Dalai Lama, who treated the team with the highest respect because of their compassionate ac-tions for children.

Personal A life long Hoosier, Colonel Pond grew up in New Haven, Indiana. His mother, Phyllis Pond, was a beloved kindergarten teacher for 37 years and the longest serving female Indiana State Representa-tive. His father, George Pond, served in the Army in World War II, then with the Merchant Marines and then as a school counselor and educator at Woodlan High School. Mr. Pond. This must explain the doctor’s love of learning. His brother, Doug, and sister, Jean Ann, both live in Indianapolis Colonel Pond is married to Camille (Cami) Pond and they live only 5 minutes from her mother Pat and father James De Mond. They have one daughter, Jennifer, three sons, Greg, Joel and Scott, and four dearly-loved grandchildren. Camille is a retired cardio-vas-cular surgical nurse, and she, like her husband, is involved with many projects. Cami also works with her husband with Operation Smile as operating room nurse. Believe it or not, he does find time to enjoy his hobbies such as downhill skiing and back country snow skiing (which means he has to ski up a mountain before skiing down because you cannot get there by a ski lift-Yes, there is a danger of avalanches.) He likes to ice wall and mountain climb. Of course he is a licensed pilot! He plays the piano as a hobby, but his greatest joy is playing piano duets with his granddaughter. Colonel Pond is a devoted husband, father, grandfather and physician. He has a love of learn-ing, adventure, community spirit, and a true love for his country. The late Representative, Phyllis J. Pond is Honored Posthumously as Son, Dr. William W. Pond Unveils the Highway Sign Bearing Her Name

Governor Mike Pence stood with the Pond family as they un-veiled the “Phyllis J. Pond Memo-rial Highway” sign in New Haven. Two signs have been placed by the Indiana Department of Trans-portation (INDOT) designating U.S. 24 - from U.S. 30 east of New Haven to the Indiana/Ohio State Line as the “Phyllis J. Pond Memorial Highway.”

“Thanks to Rep. Pond’s efforts, today U.S. 24 has been transformed from a winding two-lane, rural highway to a new four-lane, limited access expressway that provides economic development opportunities from Fort Wayne to the Port of Toledo. The new roadway improves access and safety across northern Indiana and northern Ohio,” said Governor Mike Pence.

During the 2014 General As-sembly, a concurrent resolution was passed to name an 11-mile portion of the new U.S. 24 after the late Rep. Phyllis J. Pond, who passed away in September 2013. She pro-vided more than three decades of service in the Indiana House of Representatives.

Governor Mike Pence also presented George Pond, Phyllis’s husband, with the resolution. He presented smaller vesions of the memorial signs to son, William, and wife, Cami, of Fort Wayne; son, Doug Pond, of Indianapolis; and daughter, Jean Pond Grasmick, of Indianapolis.

“As people travel the road and see the signs, it will bring a mem-ory of Mom to so many. She truly loved the people of her district, her legislative colleagues and staff; and even this time last year could name every kindergarten student she had in 37 years of teaching. She was

a legend for her sage understand-ing of the legislative process, the context and history of the issues and fairness for all sides. - “To the citizens of Indiana, thank you for bringing a lasting memory and smile to Northeast Indiana,” said Dr. William Pond.

On November 14, 2012, the late Rep. Pond stood next to the INDOT podium just before the ribbon cutting on the new US 24. She was a strong supporter of the new roadway.

Cami Pond, An Extraordinary Woman with a Passion for Making a Difference

To be in the presence of Cami Pond is to witness that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Her life is measured not in what she has or what she has done but in what she can do for others and for her country.

She recently retired from Lu-theran Health Network after 32 years - 30 of those in the operat-ing room, as a surgical nurse. She believes the biggest change in those 32 years is reflected in the many lives that were saved through technological advances. “Every day I went to a job that I loved and was presented with a chance to make a difference.”

Cami and her husband Bill have been on 19 medical missions, most of them with Operation Smile. The medical missions have taken them around the world where they have seen the plight of many children and their families.

As a military wife, she has steadfastly endured all of the train-ings and weekends away from home The greatest challenge was coping with her husband’s many deployments to the Middle East from 2002 to 2012. During this time Cami continued to work, tend to the children, and was tutored by her mother-in-law, Phyllis Pond, in legislative activism. Cami, an apt student, became the country president of the FWMS Alliance in 2004-05, president of ISMA in 2009-10, and sat on national com-mittees, including the AMA-Alli-ance National Legislative Commit-tee in 2012.

She has seen first-hand the toll that war takes on military fami-lies. Families left at home struggle with finances and raising children alone. Many returning soldiers grapple with the acclimation to everyday American life. Cami and Bill know that a lot of the returning soldiers were suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, ‘PTSD.’ The Ponds were in a unique posi-tion to address this problem. Cami was President of the Indiana State Medical Association Alliance. With the help of the Indiana Medi-cal Association, they developed a screening tool for primary care physicians to screen for PTSD and

to treat it before it caused greater injury. In 2010, it was distributed to 1,200 primary care physicians in Indiana. Through the local, state, and national Alliance, it has been distributed nationwide and changed national policy on military PTSD. Cami says, “This demonstrated to me the power of one person with passion and the power of partner-ship to bring an issue to the public and enact change.”

She is not resting on her lau-rels; currently, she is serving on the nationwide regional task force of the AMA alliance and serves as one of the National Directors. Her passions include patient advocacy, healthy communities and address-ing the issue of stress on physi-cian’s families from training to retirement. Cami’s motto is, “Here is the test to find whether your mis-sion on Earth is finished: if you’re alive, it isn’t”.

Yet, to Cami her greatest and happiest achievements are her four children and her grandchildren.
